2012/2013 Soccer/Football thread

Chelsea sold Meireles to Turkish club Fenerbahce Istanbul for 10 million euros.

As a Chelsea fan, Im upset by this move, not only Essien was loaned to Real Madrid, now Meireles is gone, We will have to stick with Lamps, Mikel and a inexperience Romeu for the rest of the season, and Lamps + Mikel was totally shit against Madrid.

Well,as much as I prefer Meireles/Essien to Mikel,RDM would continue playing him over them anyway so I'm not really surprised or saddened by this piece of transfer news.Tbh the whole team(even Hazard O.O!) was shit vs Madrid so instead of blaming Lampard and Mikel I'd say that they all underestimated Madrid(Cl winners > EL winners is the general consensus) and if you check out some of the previous UEFA super cup finals then you'll notice that a large number of the Cl winners have been victims of complacency(Athletico Madrid, who won the Europa League in '10 beat Inter, the CL champions although I don't think Barca lost to Porto last year;can't recall).

yeah that doesn't sound disrespectful at all. 'athletico's supercup successes were only because the other teams were complacent.' nothing to do with athletico outclassing you in every single area of the pitch then?

why would anyone, in what is effectively the final of a European competition, underestimate a team that has won three major European trophies in the past three years?

*Lee rants*

He didn't say it was the only reason, he said it was a reason. And he's right, Chelsea and others were complacent, and that is a contributing factor to why they lost.

The reason Chelsea would underestimate a team like Atletico Madrid is because they won a lesser cup of dwindling importance, Champion's League's little sister. A team who wins the Europa League is (usually) not as good as the Champion's League's Quarter Finalists, let alone the Champions.

nonsense, Chelsea barely finished 6th in the league last season; they've no right to be looking down their nose at anyone - if they truly did underestimate Athletico then they're a bunch of pompous fools.

No really if Chelsea's players are going into a match like that agianst a quality team like Athletico with complacency, something is seriously amiss in either the way the manager prepared for the game, or the team has just become arrogant. Winning the Champions League on penalties and finishing 6th in the Premier League should not give you any sort of pedastal to stand on.

What? Winning the Champions League on penalties should give you a pedastal to stand on. What does it matter that it was by penalties? Winning the Champions League is a great achievement no matter what.

Oh god silly argument. Atletico thrashed chelsea because they were simply the better side on the night. Of course Chelsea weren't complacent, this is a Major Tournament final lol, they likely prepared for this just like any other European match.

I know they were the better team on the night. But that doesn't mean Chelsea weren't complacent. It might be a Major Tournament Final, but playing against a team who only won the Europa League whilst you won the Champions League means you get arrogant and misjudge the opponents, especially in Chelsea's case.

I never said it wasn't a great achievement, but there is certainly something to be said for the manner of victory in the Champions League final, as well as the semi-final. There is no questioning Chelsea were deserved winners, and did fantastically to win it, but looking at their domestic form that season (FA Cup aside) you could probably say they outperformed themselves in the Champions League. Winning one Champions League does not make you a great team, it makes you a good team. It doesn't give you the right to expect to beat Athletico either. Like I said, winning one Champions League does not automatically give you the right to beat these teams, and as Athletico showed they were much better on the night. What ThatsMyLatios also holds true, them going into a match like this while being "complacent" is pretty laughable.

? They deserved the win in that they played well on the night and got the result that they needed, it doesn't necessarily mean they were the better team, or the best team in the tournament, and their domestic form last season backs that up. I don't even get what point you're trying to make with "I disagree"

i've played for a semi-professional football team that is currently at blue square north level (like 2 off league 2?) and i can pretty much say complacency hardly exists in the professional game. we played a second rate championship side and they still pushed us away, so if you blow that up to european super cup proportions then i really can't see chelsea being complacent at all. these guys are professionals and they like nothing more than to win games. you only have to look at stuff like the fa cup to realise that on their day pretty much any professional team can put up a fight against another. a fond example i have is when leeds beat man u in the fa cup a couple of years ago. we were a league one side then, so i really just think it comes down to the unpredictability of football and one side just being that bit better than the other on the day. blaming complacency for a loss is just disrespectful to what was a motivated atletico side.

No,they're not. They did not think that Atletico were bad;they considered themselves better(having won the tougher and more prestigious competition) and thus, thought it would be an easy game. You could see it in the way they began the match;carefree passing and in no hurry to attack.Even after the first goal went in they thought it'll be easy to score two and win it 2-1.they only began pushing for a goal after the second one went in but by then Atheltico were controlling the game, defending deep and then attacking on the break. And I'm obviously not ignoring the superb performance that Athletico put up in this game or their previous super cup victory;I'm just saying that the CL champions' overconfidence made it easier than it would've been.Oh and for the record, the Chelsea squad is full of arrogance(barring the new arrivals)and they blame AVB for the 6th place finish.

And after thrashing Chelsea 4-1 in the recent European Super Cup tie, Simeonehas revealed their game plan.
“The players followed my orders to perfection,” the former Lazio and Inter midfielder stated. “Branislav Ivanovic on the right can be surpassed, Mikel plays horizontally, Gary Cahill and David Luiz never participate in the construction of the game.
“So we opted to press heavily, even doubling up and tripling up on FrankLampard, Eden Hazard and Juan Mata – opting to neglect the others.

How Athletico beat chelsea

Holy crap Ireland got out of jail and hit oil while they're at it just there. 2 goals in the last 2 minutes (pretty much) when they're 1-0 down and well beaten against Kazakhstan.

raheem got a call-up to the senior england squad!

lol rodgers tells the fa it's too soon to promote him to the u21s so they bump him up to the seniors

Sterling can join the Ox as world-beating teenagers on the road to becoming future England legends!!! Just like Owen, Rooney and Walcott before them... Oh wait...

Seriously though, could he not have waited until Sterling had a decent half a season under his belt before placing the 'England' grindstone around his neck? Adding to the hype (and pressure) this way at such a young age isn't a good idea and unnecessary especially when he's very unlikely to be involved in the game. Waiting for the next round of international friendlies would have been a much more sensible time to throw him on the bandwagon imo.

Maybe it was about getting that senior England shirt on his back before Jamaica came a-knocking - Sterling is eligible to play for either country but if he accepts this call-up he's ours forever.

Hopefully too big a deal isn't made of this and he can get back to playing and improving as a 17 year old kid for his club and the ENGLAND media-wagon can jog on.

Political at best, unnecessary and stupid at worst.
