Metagame 2v2 Doubles

So the first project cycle has ended. AllFourtyOne will receive his kyubits for the first discussion phase, and the Playing phase will continue off-forums. For a lesser time-frame, here are the elimination mini-brackets.

Lancer Fr vs Poison Adhesive

D2TheW vs Exploding Donkey

(Double Elimination for D2theW due to the winning of his bracket)

Apologies for getting this out quite late.

Here is also the preliminary VR, factoring in my thoughts and what I’ve built with. I see problems with it already, so please post here on the topic that needs to be changed. The VR Team is the same as it was the last generation, and we may add more people as we go on. The VR Cycle will End on the 10th.

The 2v2 Circuit has commenced and the signups for the first tournament should be out shortly.

Also, the Council has, on and off, been discussing Dynamax. With the banning of it from LC and 1v1, along with generally negative opinions of it, we would like to hold some discussion, which will help us dictate our actions going forward. We’d hope to reach a conclusion before the end of this week.

The discussion phase ends on the 14th of December.

I see no golisopod here, and with it beating k9, drill, ttar, ludicolo, rhyp, mew, dredging, Grimm, dred, weezing head to head it really should be.

Also scrafty might be nice because of intimidate + fake out

I see no milotic here, and with it beating k9, drill, gyara, ttar, corvi, rhyp, hydreigon, wheezing, drednaw, and kiss it really should be.
It’s also a good team player so with frens it beats even more

I COULD BE BANNED!
Nominations:

:sm/oranguru: Tier 2: You all know the Trick Room setter from Gen 7.

:sm/aegislash: Tier 2/3: Attacker who can also act as offensive support with King's Shield to punish opponents for attacking it and forcing mind games. Meta isn't too friendly to it right now.

:sm/clefairy: Tier 3: Doesn't have Friend Guard yet but is still cool offensive support with redirection support (Follow Me), speed control (Icy Wind), and boosting allies' offenses (Helping Hand).

:sm/gengar: Tier 2: This is just Hydreigon with more coverage and speed.

:sm/haxorus: Tier 2: Has the tools to defeat almost every Pokemon it can encounter.

:sm/appletun: Tier 3: Not too great, but you can't forget its 66% recovery, access to Recycle, Apple Acid, huge physical bulk, and nearly unique typing.

Ban Dynamax

Some VR Noms I have:

Adding a Tier 4:
Tier 1
:Arcanine: Arcanine
:Braviary: Braviary
:Excadrill: Excadrill
:Gyarados: Gyarados
:Tyranitar: Tyranitar

Tier 2
:Alcremie: Alcremie
:Corviknight: Corviknight
:Ferrothorn: Ferrothorn
:Ludicolo: Ludicolo
:Pelipper: Pelipper
:Rhyperior: Rhyperior
:Sylveon: Sylveon

Tier 3
:Mew: Mew
:Whimsicott: Whimsicott
:Hydreigon: Hydreigon
:Dragapult: Dragapult
:Grimmsnarl: Grimmsnarl
:Weezing-Galar: Weezing-Galar
:Drednaw: Drednaw
:Toxtricity: Toxtricity
:Kommo-o: Kommo-o
:Togekiss: Togekiss
Bunch of mons that should be added to a tier 4, such as Darmanitan-Galar, Mimikyu, Mandibuzz, Rotom-H, Dracovish, and the like.

:sm/snorlax: T 2/3
Honestly believe that this thing is Amazing, but Dynamax in the tier really hinders most slow teams as Trick Room is harder to get up than last gen.

:sm/dragapult: T2
Right now this seems better than most tier 3 mons right now.

:sm/whimsicott: T2
Really Underestimated how good speed control it was. I felt that a lack of offense would bring it down, but it isnt that bad, especially coupled with something like Dracovish

As always, thanks for reading and have a nice day.

I actually like dynamax for 6v6 singles. It allows for a more anime style improvisational approach to assigning the star of the show than mega evolution and Z-moves, basically giving you an answer to any one mon you just can't deal with. Whether it's a wall, a sweeper, a terrain of weather user, dynamaxing probably provides the answer, all the while adding to the diversity and choices you have because it's only 3 turns out of a whole game.

For 2v2 doubles though it's almost a mandatory move on turn 1, and you probably already know which mon is going to use it. Here it restricts diversity and choice. (Though not quite as bad as in 1v1.) On top of this providing an easy counter to stuff like terrains and weather feels like a bad thing in this metagame, in this setting those are the basis of some of the most interesting tactics. So for 2v2 I don't like it.

But that's just my two cents, as one of the lesser masters in the room.

I COULD BE BANNED!
Dynamax reduces the amount of skill required to play 2v2 by over-centralizing predictions around it. It vastly decreases the impact of the prediction– choice–outcome interaction for everything else. Half of the game is just predicting which one of your opponent's Pokemon will Dynamax after Team Preview or before turn one. Much of the other half is predicting which Dynamax moves the opponent will use, which are much more important than the other Pokemon's. Sometimes I'm sometimes forced into an uncomfortable situation where my opponent has a combination of two possible Dynamaxers. The best Pokemon combo for me to send out is different based on which Dynamaxes, even though the Pokemon are the same.

I've taken a look at the playoffs for the playing phase. I'm only analyzing three games, between Lkjchjdhbjidcgjhd and maxy1991991, because I don't want to write an entire essay:

G1: Lkjc's options aren't much in number, but he chooses the safe option. Surprisingly, maxy chooses his two non-Electric resists against an Electric Terrain hyper offense From the fact that both of Lkjc's Pokemon chose to attack :gyarados:, he appears to have predicted the Dynamax correctly. Since maxy's :gyarados: is killed before it gets to attack and his :darmanitan-galar: can only threaten Hawlucha, it is uncertain how maxy predicted his opponent's Dynamax. This match does not offer much information but does set the theme of Dynamax for the rest of their match.

G2: In a mysterious surprise, maxy chooses the same disadvantageous pairing. Lkjc's mistake is that he Dynamaxes Hawlucha: High Jump Kick or Close Combat is actually stronger than a Max Knuckle. He is strategically pressured into making a suboptimal play due to other risks, namely the threat of being attacked. maxy makes many suboptimal plays: he chooses a bad Pokemon combination, he tries to attack the worse target on turn one (:hawlucha:), and his :gyarados: Max Guards from no attack (presumably predicting that :rotom-wash: would Dynamax and attack it). Lkjc loses from an incorrect Dynamax choice due to a highly pressuring risk, even though maxy makes suboptimal plays throughout the game.

G3: Both players send out the same choices. Lkjc predicts his opponent's Dynamax correctly, as evidenced by both of his Pokemon attacking :gyarados:, but he forgets Max Guard – a cornerstone of Dynamax. :darmanitan-galar: proceeds to easily KO Hawlucha and put a huge dent in :rotom-wash:. maxy would have won had not Stone Edge missed against :rotom-wash:.

Cool analysis but my team was just a massive cteam and the only mons I was ever going to pick was rowash and lucha. Maxy bringing darm threw me off and that’s why it didn’t go as smoothly

The first playing phase has ended with Lkjc as the winner, getting 100 kyubits.

The Discussion phases' winner is Cantius.

As per normal, here's the playing phase guidines:

Playing Phase

 • 4-5 Day signup phase.
 • A 9 day playing phase in pools, the pools depend on the player count, and whether it’s even.
 • If people have an even record, the winnings will be divided, or the verdict will be decided via off-forums tournament
 • You'd have to state which games you’ve won / lost

The winners of both phases will be given 100 kyubits (1v1 forum room currency) at the end of the two phases.

Really, the only question now is, which kind of format do you want for the playing phase?

Here are the two:

Small Pool Bo3’s

 • Players have small pools of approximately 3-5 players that have to bo3 everyone in the pool.

Huge Bracket Round Robins:

 • Essentially I split the PL (depending on size) in half and make a round robin for all players.

We may not be technically part of 1v1 anymore, but lets be real here; the majority of 2v2 players have came from the 1v1 forum, and we have had tournament representation in their team tours.
Post "in" or "2v2" to join. Also post 1 or 2 for option 1 or 2

The signup deadline will be December 19th, at 10 am est.
