Welcome to Battling 101! If you're seeking a tutor for Old Gens OU, you are in the right place. Please read all the rules carefully and fill out every part of the application.

Available Formats:
SS OU, SM OU, XY OU, BW OU, DPP OU, ADV OU, GSC OU, RBY OU

THE RULES

  • You must be able to access Discord, or whatever your tutor wants as the primary form of communication.
  • You must be willing to use Pokemon Showdown! even if you are being tutored in a cartridge format such as Battle Spot or VGC.
  • You, the tutee, should have at least 15 posts before signing up AND your account's age should be a minimum of at least 1 month old before signing up.
    • This is not a strict requirement meaning you may still be paired without satisfying it, so no matter what, DO NOT spam post elsewhere in the forum. That is an infractable offense and we do not encourage such behavior from potential Tutees.
  • You must have battled competitively for a decent amount in at least ONE of the Smogon tiers or Battle Spot / VGC to sign up. Playing 10 or so matches on the PS! ladder is not substantial enough, ~70 or so is more reasonable. This experience does not need to be for the format you sign-up for; this is just to weed out people who have never played competitively that can improve themselves simply by using resources already available to them without needing a tutor to hold their hand.
  • You, the tutee, are responsible for setting up times with your tutor. When you receive the Smogon notification informing you of the pairing, please take the initiative and post on their VM wall first. Continued scheduling and communication is key to a successful pairing!
  • Use the Tutee Talk forum to complain about your tutor (or praise them if they're doing a good job). These are no longer mandatory, but if your tutor is ridiculously inactive or is a complete jackass, COMPLAIN HERE. Nobody can see your tutee talk posts except for you and the Battling 101 Staff; everything is confidential.
  • Signups older than 4 months or 1 month since last login will be considered inactive. These will be moved to the Inactive Posts thread, and can be returned back to this thread by request.
  • Tutors can and will drop you if sessions go badly, and significant violations may result in a ban from B101. Be active, be enthusiastic, be respectful. Make the best of your time together!

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I started playing competitively in early XY and spammed Baton Pass on the ladder. I was pretty skilled I guess. I then got more involved with Smogon and started to play in various tournaments like UUPL and later on Snake and SPL. I could use a bit more practice in this tier though, so I'm looking to get help

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): Started comp mons playing ndou and that has been my main format for a year and a half now, but I’ve been getting interested in fairy gens as well because of the games I’ve seen / played being really fun to watch and I want to be able to perform well in old gen individuals at some point. I have a baseline knowledge of these gens as I’ve played them in the past in certain tours but I want to become proficient in building because the team structures in these tiers catch my attention. I also want to improve my set recognition in these tiers / general in-game so I can perform better in future tours with them.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I got onroaded to ADV about six months ago, have a bit of tour experience but not really satisfied with my skill level and looking to improve. I've played some of and been interested in DPP and BW for a while and really want to improve at those as well. I play almost every OU every now and then but I'm particularly focused on improving at these three oldgens. I really enjoy teambuilding in all three, and would like to reach a skill level where I can do it more comfortably.

I've been playing since Gen 5, when I started it was usually for fun and not getting so serious I played mostly in a hispanic server so that's where I came with some builds little crazy but it worked. Time has passed and I wanted to improve those tiers that I played before, I'm getting better playing SS to be honest making to the quarterfinals of the SSLT that was made recently I hope that can counts lol, making 5-2 masters league and a 6-3 on OUFL, also last year I was close to make it to the top cut on Smogon masters doing a 6-3. I don't wanna be only a SS player I want to be helpful with other tiers and even with buildings so I can fit for any team.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I started playing the tier around 2021 on a Latin American platform, I found it fun but that was it. Then I started playing it again starting in 2023 when I wanted to improve but due to studies I put it aside and now starting in 2024 I started playing more actively, I reached round 3 in DPP CUP X, now I tried to play championship but I left round 1 and I wanted to play outside of smog in other places and it didn't go very well either. I would like to become more competent in this tier.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I played gen 7 and 8 when they were current gen, but not at any competitive level. Recently I've been playing them in tours like Masters, STour and Seasonals and not only have I found I've improved, but I've been enjoying playing these gens a lot more. I'd love the chance to refresh my memory a bit and learn the intricacies of either of these metas in the hopes to continue growing and playing them more competitively.

A couple of years ago I started playing occasionally and in the last year or so I've played more regularly. Started with Pure Hackmons but I have more experience in ADV. Recently I've started feeling like my understanding of pokemon is flawed. For instance, I can't quite work out the essential components of a particular game are, or what needs to be done for me to win exactly.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): started around 7/8 months ago. Used to play SV then transitioned into ORAS and SM where ive had some success. I find BW very fun, and want to increase my knowledge of that tier. I have decentish knowledge in SM and ORAS but i wish to achieve mastery of these tiers to some extent. I can build decently, but want to click better and reach a ladder peak. Been drafted for 2 PLs till now but i want to increase that.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I have been playing ADV OU for about 2 years, and have been competing in tours for 1.5 years. I have been fortunate enough to have a relatively fast come up that I am very proud of, placing top 32 in many tours (ADV Winter Seasonal 2024, Old Money Open 2024, Mugulis Cup 2024, Winter Classic 2025), going 6-3 in ADVR 2, and making it to Finals of Jimvitational 2 Playins. I am mostly self taught, but I feel like I am reaching the limits of what I can learn on my own and have started to plateau as a result.

I still struggle with a few things that I think have really been holding me back:

- I am able to understand how I lose games after the fact, but struggle to identify less obvious lose cons mid game.
- I am not able to maintain consistency with how well I am playing. I feel that this is due to struggling with some smaller scale decision making, as well as being slow to adapt to the cadence my opponent is playing at.
- I am really terrible at identifying structures (both in scouts and mid game) and effectively counter teaming on my own.
- Similar to the above point, I struggle to identify weaknesses when team building. The number of times I have tried team building, only to create something that gets destroyed by more than one common OU threat is ridiculous.

I am sure there are more flaws that I am unaware of, but this is what I have been able to identify on my own.

i have been playing competitive oras ou for a while. I have been getting a decent amount of tier knowledge. i probably know how to deal with certain playstyles and matchups. however, i often make questionable plays and ended up losing my games. I want to get more knowledge on the tier, as well as learning how to pilot teams and make winning plays

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): i've played since oras was cg and have a lot of experience in a lot of gens and different tiers in tournaments. I havent played much old gens and would really like to pickup gens 1 and 2 since they're quite mechanically basic, which emphasizes play more. Im looking for more of an experienced sparring tutor who can run some and let me know when i've made some innaccuracies.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokémon (min. 3 sentences): BW OU is one of my favorite generations that I've been playing since mid-late 2019. During this time, I did mess around with other metagames, but BW OU stuck with me like glue because of how fun the 5th Generation of competitive is, and the high-level tour games like SPL, Smogtours during that time, and other circuits with strong players further encouraged me to improve at BW. From then to now, I still try to learn and invest myself into tours as much as I can, and there were admittedly moments of self-improvement in how far I can go, there were still a lot of errors that held me back from being consistent in games. Thus, I wish to find someone fortunate to polish my way of battling and generally learn new things to get better.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I've played in several tours, and have gotten some respectable wins, but I'm too inconsistent to make any "deep" runs. I went 6-3 in ADVR2 and crushed newer players until I ran into anyone with real consistent skill and got owned. I believe there are likely many obvious flaws that hold me back, but I struggle at coming up with plans to improve my mons play (if I'm being honest, I want a tutor who is very eager to point out my flaws so I can quit coping and overcome them). If you're a potential tutor worried about hurting my feelings, don't. My feelings are my own problem.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I started playing tour w/ rands in January last year, made top 16 of that circuit and went 5-1 in rbtt, went 2-1 in uuwc beating empo, voted #3 best new player on the site in smog awards, picked up doubles and went 7-3 in osdt, got drafted in dpl, and I'm currently 3-3 in smpl and 1-0 in bsspl. I also won an individual cavy tour in roa slam, taking down a few spl players along the way. Despite all this, I've never really played ou before, which is something i'd like to get into, and I'm not the best at building outside of doubles, which is something im hoping to work on. I'd also like to learn how to path and position better long term.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I've been on Pokemon Showdown since Black/White, I missed out on DPP when it was the current gen. I got into DPP OU at the end of last year and am currently Top 500 and peaked at 1500 on one of my accounts. I not only want to hit Rank 1, but I want to be good enough at DPP to consistently stay 1600+ and also participate in tournaments. I tried applying for tutoring in other generations but I learned that DPP is the only generation that interests me. Around 2009 I discovered DPP Wi-Fi Battles and that got me into Competitive Pokemon to begin with so I've always wanted to be good at DPP ever since I was a kid/

During that time I competed at a relatively high level, playing several spl's in DPP OU. I've recently started playing again and would like to play another tier competitively. I always enjoyed laddering ORAS when it was cg, hence my interest in learning it.

Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I started playing competitive Pokemon from GSC. I started enjoying it but also getting piss mad for my mistakes. Tell us a little about your experience in competitive Pokemon (min. 3 sentences): I've been playing a range of different tours with mixed results, to get to know different metas with the aim of being an 'all rounder player' and know the community much better.

I've recently been tutored by Gypsy in BW OU who helped me cover a range of things, however, I want to continue this momentum, improving the fundamentals and teambuilding process, and fairy gens have been my weaker/weakest gens.

I am very active on showdown and will be willing to put the time, effort, and enthusiasm in with my potential tutor.
