Is the description of the damage formula on Smogon accurate/up-to-date? When I used that formula to calculate damage ranges by hand, I got different results from both psypokes and metalkid's damage calculators, but they gave the same results as each other.

It's accurate. Most likely you made a calculation error (as it is a somewhat long formula). Make sure you follow your rules of PEMDAS! b^-^

I've been making multiple runs through Platinum to collect the legendaries with different natures/IVs (serial RNG abuse), and I've gone through enough times that I'm having a little trouble choosing which Azelf to get next...

I already have:

Timid 31/31/31/31/31/31
Naive 30/31/31/31/31/31
Jolly 31/31/31/29/31/31
Timid 31/30/30/30/30/30 (HP Fighting 70)

Possibilities to get next:
Naive 30/31/31/30/26/31 (HP Ground 70)
Timid 31/31/31/30/30/31 (HP Ground 70)
Adamant 31/31/31/24/31/31
Rash 31/30/30/31/31/31 (HP Ice 70, but also seems to be the best Rash spread regardless of Hidden Power)
Naive 31/30/30/31/31/31 (HP Ice 70)
Timid 31/22/30/31/31/31 (HP Ice 70)
Anything I may have missed...?

I figure it's good to invoke the "Ask the Audience" lifeline in such a state of indecision. Any input will be much appreciated!

Here's the formula that's listed on Smogon.

Damage = (((((((Level * 2 / 5) + 2) * BasePower * [Sp]Atk / 50) / [Sp]Def) * Mod1) + 2) * CH * Mod2 * R / 100) * STAB * Type1 * Type2 * Mod3

The calculation I ran was with a L100 Pidgeot (217 Attack) using Quick Attack against a L100 Venusaur (223 Defense). No items or abilities are in effect, so all the Modx variables are equal to 1. Using this formula, the minimum and maximum damage I found were:

Min Damage = (((((((100 * 2 / 5) + 2) * 40 * 217 / 50) / 223) * 1) + 2) * 1 * 1 * 85 / 100) * 1.5 * 1 * 1 * 1 = 42

Max Damage = (((((((100 * 2 / 5) + 2) * 40 * 217 / 50) / 223) * 1) + 2) * 1 * 1 * 100 / 100) * 1.5 * 1 * 1 *1 = 51

The Psypokes and MetalKid damage calculators show the damage range to be 44-52.

If I made a rounding error or something in my math, I can't find it. The smogon page said to round down after every step in the calculation, but are there any exceptions to that?

Edit: Out of curiosity, I also put the example stats on the Smogon page into the Psypokes damage calculator. Smogon lists the damage range as 114-134. Psypokes shows the damage range as 120-142. It looks like psypokes and MetalKid don't round down until the end of the formula, so I think my manual calculations were right.

SID help?

Hey new to smogon, not sure if this thread should go hear but here goes.
Basically I got myself an RNG but im pretty noob at it, my first problem encountered is a required SID... secret id im guessing? If anyone can help out it would be much appreciated, thanks in advance smogon users.

Actually, it's become pretty common knowledge that Metalkid's calculator overestimates damage. The calcs you did by hand are probably more accurate.

SID is Secret ID, yes. If you go over to the WiFi forum (in the simple questions/simple requests thread or the smogon Services Thread), there are plenty of people there who would be willing to help you find out what yours is. It will require an AR of you don't have at least one natural or chained shiny, though.

Hey guys, how do you think the Pokemon HGSS moves that Dialga, Giratina, and Palkia get will affect them in the uber metagame? Respectively, they will get Metal Burst, Shadow Sneak, and Hydro Pump.

Metal Burst on Dialga might see use for punishing Groudon, Shadow Sneak could see use on Giratina-O for revenge killing, and Hydro Pump on Palkia is really useful for Uber Double Battles (it also seems Modest Palkia might be able to beat Blissey in the rain with Hydro Pump...).

Thanks, oh while I'm at it, has there been any articles on XD's RNG abuse?

I wish. All we seem to know is that some random numbers that govern future random numbers are generated when XD first creates data on the Memory Card (in order to change these numbers, apparently you have to delete the data off the memory card as opposed to just starting a new game). Nothing that we can abuse yet.

Wow! That sounds amazingly difficult, as if Nintendo didn't want us to crack it...

hey is a ev spread of 255/255 in two stats legal in game? i ask cause i usually see 252/252/4hp as an ev layout

Yes, but you only gain a stat point for every four EVs put in a stat, so a stat with 255 EVs will have the same value as the same stat with 252 EVs. Running 255/255 rather than 252/252/4 causes you to lose a stat point in one of your non-focused stats (whichever one would get the 4).

Probably the saddest question you'll read today..
but once the game says "The save file has been erased due to corruption or damage" are there any means at all to recover the lost data? :(
Platinum. D:

Is there a tool I can use to cross check moves? for instance, if I wanted a way to find all the pokemon that learn both Baton Pass, and Agility.

Use THIS.
It's missing some event moves, 3rd Gen Tutor moves, and XD moves though, and it shows some illegal combination, but it works for the most part.

For calculating your SID by using a Shiny and doing the calculation does it matter if the shiny pokemon was caught using the always shiny code on an AR??
