Ask a simple question, get a simple answer - VGC edition

Question 1: The line up started outside and I was inside so I'm not exactly sure when people started to line up. I passed by outside around 9am and don't remember seeing anyone lined up. There may have only been a few people lined up at that time so I didn't notice it was a line up. When I went to line up around 12pm, I overheard someone near the front say they were thankful they lined up when Junior registration started(which was around 8:30am) but as I said before, I never saw them earlier. I counted roughly 150 people in front of me when I got in line at 12pm although not everyone lined up was a competitor and some of them may have been holding a spot in line for more people so this may not be very accurate. I don't remember how long it took to get from my spot in line to registration.

Question 2: You battle with a person near you in line. They ask if you're in a group so you can avoid fighting your friends in Round 1. After you win, you go to the next area and get paired up with whoever is waiting. You might have to fight your friends in later rounds if there is no one else to fight. This goes on until you win enough times to reach the winner's lounge (takes 3 or 4 wins). At this point, hack checks are done and they kick out any cheaters. Next they hand out byes. Finally, they randomly pair people up in each round until only 1 remains.

Question 3: 3 or 4 wins to get to the Finalist Lounge. I had to beat 3 to get there but I've heard others had to beat 4. I'm not sure what it depends on. From the finalist lounge, you needed 2 more wins (or 1 bye and 1 win) to reach the Top 16. From the Top 16, you need 4 more wins to take first place.

Question 4: They are handed out at random after they finish all the pre-winner's lounge battles. As far as I know, people who had to win 4 battles to get to the winner's lounge did not recieve special preference for getting a bye.

Question 5: 208 Juniors, 439 Seniors.

quick question, i am trying to get sucker punch on my hitmontop, i have been to sites on how to do that from serebii to bulba and they all say the move tutors in plat/ss and hg will teach my hitmontop that move but i want confirmation from some1 who knows because those sites all also said that the move tutors in plat/hg/ss would teach my azelf zen headbut and guess what, i got screwed and had to take azelf out of my team, and i'm still waiting on platnum to teach azelf zen headbut cause ss/hg failed.

also which is better over for the vgc scene so far, dialga with his better defences or palkia

I don't know how flexable they are, but to some extent you can decline to battle someone to get a different opponent. In my case, it was my brother, they'll probably allow it for friends as well. If you are about to fight someone you know and you want to fight other people, ask the staff about getting a different opponent. At worst, they just turn you down.

I heard though that even if you ask, you are pretty much guaranteed to play the person the 2nd round or 3rd round, because that's the way they do the pairings.
 
He can opt out not to play if that's not his intention. They'll understand him being there since he's your dad.

Yes, you can teach hitmontop sucker punch from the tutors, but if you are in platinum make sure you go to the right tutor house because there are three tutors in platinum. The tutor that teaches suckerpunch and zen headbutt is on route 212.

So far, palkia and dialga have posed major threats in the vgc metagame. It depends on what kind of team you are using for either palkia or dialga, so you must choose which does better on your team.
 
thank you for the answer tyler. woot my team is finally ready to hit the testing phase[well except for "breakdancer" who still doesnt know sucker punch untill i get 2 ds's so i can trade between pearl to my ss, or some1 helps me with the trade], On to practice battles....and then phoenix woot.

once i get a stable time i will post my FC, untill then if you want a VGC EV fully strat based practice battle just pm me when u see me on.

The Ducks in Seattle were all in line with each other and we even included 3 other people as our 'group', and they made sure that each of us was paired with someone else in R1
 
wow thats awsome, hope the staff are that nice on all the stops, i missed you guys [the ducks] and whomever else was in seattle, i wish i coulda said hi and taken some pics. but its cool the team rocket guys were awsome though. if you are gonna be in phoenix let me know so i dont miss u, i only plan on 2 stops this year, next year i am gonna go for 4 stops hehe
 
So pretty much, memorize all the smogoners going to your event from the pics page and if you see that you are about to battle one, claim that he/she is your cousin and would like not to be the one to have to battle him/her lol
 
so it has zerowings pic is in for those going to phoenix but since he wong the seattle event i am assuming i wont see him there?
 
I'm pretty sure that if you have already got first at one tournament you can't compete for another one, but if you didn't get first and say got 3rd you can try again for another chance at $300 or a free trip. If I am wrong, someone correct me, but I believe this is right.
 
I have a question about the $300 for getting 4th-2nd place. Can we use it if we are driving to nationals? For me to drive it is so much cheaper than flying not to mention I still gotta pay for a hotel. I would much rather drive and only pay like $200 out of pocket then fly and pay about $500-$700. Idk why they wouldn't let us, but from war stories, everyone has used the money to fly.

As long as you get to Nationals somehow, you will get your $300 stipend. Doesn't matter how.
 
wow out of my first 5 practice battles and i already have 1 loss, the guy's team was just so dam............wally/bulky, damit. his lead was cresselia and kyogre, and his back ups were blissy and mewtwo. lol i ko'd his kyogre 1st turn but that gave his cresselia a chance to set up calm mind. and that thing just never went down from there and blissy took 4ever to kill by itself, sob if i loss again its back to the drawing board
 
So I totally emailed a hotel in Indy about possibly having discounted rates for national battlers. Idk if any hotels did this last year, if any did, or if you know of any that will tell me. If this hotel ends up being a sweet deal for battlers then I will post a thread about it. I think it would be pretty sweet having all of smogon in one hotel. We could do an awesome local tourney the night before.
 
that'd be awsome, especially if i ended up going [if i get to top 16 in phoenix 4sure i will be going] and even more awsome is that cresselia isnt a pokemon u can use in vgc, whew i was about to go back to the drawing board for a counter

Um, you can use Cresselia... The only banned Pokémon are:
151 - Mew
251 - Celebi
385 - Jirachi
386 - Deoxys
489 - Phione
490 - Manaphy
491 - Darkrai
492 - Shaymin
493 - Arceus
so Cresselia is just fine.
