Once upon a time, long, long ago, lived a king who ruled over a large and prosperous kingdom. He was a greedy, selfish king, and by exploiting his subjects he amassed an untold amount of wealth. Gold, jewels, art -- he had it all and more. But somebody who holds greed in their heart can never rest easy, no matter the size of their bounty. Wary of thieves, the king locked up all his treasures within a huge palace in the middle of a desolate desert, far away, frequented by nobody. There, he thought, his riches would be safe from sly hands.

Until one night, while the king slept, a great rainfall flooded the desert and washed away his palace and its treasure, and from the wet sand sprouted a forest of trees! A desert to a rainforest, overnight! Nobody could believe it; least of all, the king. The king himself set out to search for his lost treasure, but found not a single coin under the thick leaves of the rainforest. He never returned. Or so the legend goes -- its details change ever so slightly depending on the storyteller. In any case, this is the old legend that brings you to where you are today.

Your adventure begins at Ol' Pete's Boating and Fishing Supplies (tm), a modest boating store by the edge of this legendary rainforest. In front of the store, you see a cardboard prop-up of a smiling young sailor boy eagerly beckoning you towards the entrance. A sign taped to the window says: "Boating! Fishing! Kayaking! Anything you need, we got it!" Emboldened, you enter the store and ask the store owner if you can rent a kayak. He frowns and shakes his head.

"No siree! No can do! Lately we've had too many wannabe treasure-hunters trying to kayak through this rainforest with no skill or wit. They keep bumping into rocks and stuff and ruining our boats! We used to have a whole fleet of rental boats, but now we're down to only one! So we're not doing any boat rentals anymore. Sorry, come again."

You offer to raise the price, but he still refuses. You double it! But still no. You briefly consider just stealing a kayak, but upon seeing several CCTV cameras positioned in the store you dismiss the thought. Nevertheless, you can't let your adventure end here.

How will your Pokemon help you convince the shop owner to lend you a kayak?

"Eh...I'm not sure I like this plan..." *Warbling*

"It will be fine; the man shall still receive payment and we will not be forced to abandon another adventure..." *Teary look*

"Please, won't you reconsider?"

Mawile will use Fake Tears to persuade the shopkeeper to rent out the kayak.

Altaria will use Disarming Voice to further appeal to the shopkeeper's emotions.

"No means no, and that's final."
(sob sob)
"...Hey, c'mon, don't cry. I'm sure you can figure something out..."
"Waaaah ~♪"

"You too? ......(sigh.) Alright... (I can't stand to see Pokemon cry.)"

Reluctantly, the store owner accepts your money. He heaves a large kayak from one of the shelves onto his shoulder and drops it in front of you, along with a set of paddles, three helmets, and three safety vests. "Now you bring all this equipment back in one piece, alright?"

Success! +2 TC

It's a bit of a struggle, but you manage to half-carry half-push the boat to the riverbank. You and your Pokemon give it one last shove, then quickly hop on and begin paddling. Despite being a total novice to boating, you find that the kayak is surprisingly easy to steer. As you ride down the river, the trees around you become more crowded and the flora more lush. Soon you find yourself in the midst of a wild and untamed jungle. From all sides you hear the rustling of leaves and the chattering of birds. Eventually, you reach a point where you can stop paddling entirely and let the river's current pull you lackadaisically forward.

Suddenly, a gooey mass falls from an overhanging tree branch and lands right inside your boat! At first you're not sure what it is, until it rises to its full height and you see its two long antenna and snail-like hump. A wild Sliggo, it is. It sniffs the air curiously before addressing you:

:ss/sliggoo: "Got any fish?"

You explain that you're not a fisherman and this is not a fishing boat.

:sliggoo: "Liar! No human would bother boating through the wilderness unless it's to fish! Now hand over the goods, I'm starving!"

It seems that there is no reasoning with this wild Pokemon.

Tyl extends a truce to the Sliggoo, who reluctantly accepts it. Atop Tyl's gentle wings, the Sliggoo rises. Once the slug has adhered itself firmly to a sturdy branch, it squirms along the tree and out of sight without another word.

From nearby you hear a strange and sonorous laughter.

"Oh, how funny! You fight with unbridled ferocity, then show mercy after victory is decided. I'm not sure what you hope to gain like that. I was going to just hide and watch you, but now that I know you don't kill, I have no reason not to play with you."

You look around but see nobody. You call out: "Who's there?" Then, from thin air, a menacing Misdreavus materializes!

:ss/misdreavus: "Wow, you've all been such good sports! Most people either run away or faint as soon as the fun starts. But not you! You're so much more considerate than that. We should play again sometime."

> It seems that Misdreavus is in an amiable mood now. You ask it if it knows where you could find the treasure you're looking for.

:ss/misdreavus: "Oh, I wouldn't have a clue about any hidden treasure. Treasure hunting doesn't interest me at all anymore (being a ghost and all). Once you don't need to feed yourself to survive, your priorities change, y'know? These centuries I'm more into... I dunno, scaring tourists, mostly. But, as for advice: try avoiding the main course of the river. Steer down the smaller arms and tributaries instead. After all, if what you're looking for were on the main path, it would've been found already, right? Anyways, good luck! I'll be watching you... teehee..."

Gradually, the Misdreavus's body fades from view, leaving only a floating pair of eyes. Then the eyes too vanish.

You take a moment to adjust your life vest and pick up your paddles, as do your partner Pokemon. Taking charge of the boat's path, you steer yourselves off of the river's main path and onto a narrow and meandering tributary. Immediately you notice that without the current to your back, the going gets much, much tougher. You and your Pokemon strain your muscles to their limit as you barely manage to paddle your kayak around countless twists and turns, over shallows, and through shifting rapids.

It's the hardest you've ever worked in your life. Sweat beads atop your forehead. Pain boils your biceps. Sores fester across your palms. Before long, you have no choice but to stop paddling to catch your breath. You wonder inwardly if you will have the strength to navigate back home. And, what fate awaits you should you leave yourself moored and motionless for too long in the middle of a rainforest, inhabited by all sorts of ferocious Pokemon? Doubtless not a good one.

P2X7 how will your Pokemon help you overcome your fatigue?

*Labored breathing* "Keep moving, team. We know too little about this place to rest for long."

"...Wrong, boss; we can't yet rest, but you can..."

"Mawile's right. Let us help you!"

Altaria will use Heal Bell to cure the team's fatigue.

Mawile will take over rowing duties with Sheer Force while I recuperate.

Tyl showers you with waves of glowing blue energy that make you feel alert and energized. Although the Heal Bell doesn't completely remove the aching pain in your arms, you at least have more gas in the tank than you did before. Not that you get a chance to test that out -- Mawile is taking over with the paddles at double-speed! It looks like she's given up on trying to steer, instead channeling all her remaining energy into pure, raw force. Each swing of the paddles splashes columns of water and sends the kayak hurtling forward several meters. At this heightened speed, rocks and other obstacles that you would've had to maneuver around before, the kayak can glide straight over! Quite the savings on energy, so long as the kayak doesn't break...

SUCCESS! +2 TC

Just as you are thinking that, you hear a loud CRUNCH!! and the kayak stops. Although Mawile continues to paddle fiercely, the kayak doesn't budge an inch. You peer over the front of the boat and see that you have run aground into a heaping pile of sticks and branches that were blocking the river.

A round, bushy head peers out from inside the mound of branches.

:ss/bibarel: "Hey! Stop rowing, you're destroying my dam!"

Then another form appears, this one smaller and more delicate.

:ss/hattrem: "Aww, I was enjoying the chill vibes here until you got Bibarel angry. How are we gonna calm you down, Bibarel?"
:bibarel: "Let's beat up the vandals!"
:hattrem: "Sounds good to me."
