And charizard wouldn't be that bad, I guess. I just dont want to get stuck using a sucky character. Imagine being forced to use Zelda in Melee. Eww...
I wouldn't think you'd be
forced to use Charizard for more than a second or two while switching to Squirtle. Sure, the site says that it's bad to switch too often, but I don't think using Ivysaur for a while, switching to Charizard for a split second, and switching to Squirtle and using it for a while will be too detrimental. It may be a bit more tedious, but you can still skip over Charizard if you don't want to play him.
That being said, I think the players who'll want to use the Pokemon Trainer effectively will need to learn how to use each Pokemon efficiently and learn how to alternate between the three of them at the proper times. I imagine Squirtle will be best for just starting out and poking at the opponent as to pile on little bits of damage very quickly, while Charizard would work best for late game after the other two Pokemon have racked up a bit of damage or when an opponent is at a high percentage and you just need one, powerful blow to send him/her out of the ring. Ivysaur would probably be a balance between Squirtle and Charizard, with decent damage and decent staying power. However, as the saying goes, jack of all trades, master of none.
But hey, if the heavy characters just continue to suck, for me there's always Falco or Sonic if he makes it in (preferably with a Shadow alternate outfit <_<).
>_> that would look so akward if Charizard moved around at like say Bowser's speed.
Actually, I can see that happening quite fine. In most media, when Charizard has to move from point A to point B, it's usually flying instead of walking. Judging from its size and body structure, I don't think its walking speed is very good at all. I could see him being a bit faster than Bowser though, if not quite as powerful.
Honestly, I'm even more excited to play the trainer than I am to play as Sonic if he gets in (and I'm quite the Sonic fan), if only because I can finally play as Ivysaur and Charizard, both of which are my favorite evolutions in their respective evolutionary lines and really high up on my favorite Pokemon list (Squirtle's pretty cool too, but it's no Blastoise).
