On to week 4! I figured I might as well nab a team from our most recent former TL so, here goes! Props to Zenithial

This is a semi-stall revolving around the formidable defog core of Ho-Oh and Giratina. Ferrothorn provides the Primal Kyogre check along with spikes to pressure the opponent. Arceus-Dark prevents the likes of Calm Mind Ultra Necrozma and Yveltal from breaking through, with the use of Calm Mind and Ice Beam respectively. Ho-Oh stops Dusk Mane and is able to defog off of most Pokemon that would otherwise stop Giratina. Lugia stops Mega Rayquaza from smashing through with all evs being put into hp and defence alongside the use of multiscale. Finally, Arceus-Poison is the mandatory Xerneas check as well as a secondary Marshadow check alongside Ho-Oh, whilst being the Stealth Rock user of the team. Overall, a solid team that is able to cover most of the key threats in the current meta.

Deadline for core submissions is Friday 11:59 PM EST.

Xerneas @ Fairium Z
Ability: Fairy Aura
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Geomancy

- Moonblast
- Rest

Deoxys-Speed @ Focus Sash
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Stealth Rock
- Spikes
- Taunt
- Magic Coat
tbh the xern set just wins by itself, but deo-s helps its job get a little easier by limiting this teams options and getting up hazards to hit everything easier. with no perish song and the only way to phase out mons being whirlwind, this set cleanly wins.

Looking at Zenithial's team, I noticed his main checks to special attackers were Arceus-Poison and Ferrothorn. Naganadel immediately jumped to my mind given that it sets up against both of them and nothing on his team really checks it. The second thing I aimed to exploit on Zenithial's team is that both of his Defog users are very passive when Taunted, and he has no alternative means of hazard control. This allows Deoxys-Speed to get Stealth Rocks up and keep them on with Taunt fairly easily. Deoxys-Speed also sets up dual screens, which lets Naganadel set up much more safely against Zenithial's team. It's incredibly easy to win with this core: setting up screens and rocks right away results in a pretty much certain win since Naganadel matches up so well against this kind of team.

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

Lucario @ Lucarionite
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature

- Bullet Punch

Heatran straight up beats five of the six members of Zen's team, only being pressured by Darkceus. It can, however, punish Darkceus' switchin with Toxic or Stealth Rock. None of Zen's defoggers hold up very well to Heatran spamming Toxic + Taunt either.

After the team has been chipped a little, and rocks are up, Lucario can come in on Darkceus, get a Justified boost, and maybe even SD, outspeeding and smashing through the team.

With a Justified boost:
+1 252 Atk Adaptability Lucario-Mega Meteor Mash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Lugia: 192-226 (46.1 - 54.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
+1 252 Atk Adaptability Lucario-Mega Meteor Mash vs. 252 HP / 160 Def Arceus-Poison: 238-282 (53.6 - 63.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
+1 252 Atk Adaptability Lucario-Mega Meteor Mash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Giratina: 204-240 (40.4 - 47.6%) -- 3.1% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+1 252 Atk Adaptability Lucario-Mega Close Combat vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Ho-Oh: 164-194 (39.5 - 46.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

With a SD:
+2 252 Atk Adaptability Lucario-Mega Meteor Mash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Lugia: 256-302 (61.5 - 72.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252 Atk Adaptability Lucario-Mega Close Combat vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Ho-Oh: 219-258 (52.7 - 62.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+2 252 Atk Adaptability Lucario-Mega Meteor Mash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Giratina: 272-320 (53.9 - 63.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+2 252 Atk Adaptability Lucario-Mega Meteor Mash vs. 252 HP / 160 Def Arceus-Poison: 318-376 (71.6 - 84.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

With a Justified boost and a SD:
+3 252 Atk Adaptability Lucario-Mega Meteor Mash vs. 252 HP / 160 Def Arceus-Poison: 396-468 (89.1 - 105.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
+3 252 Atk Adaptability Lucario-Mega Close Combat vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Ho-Oh: 273-322 (65.7 - 77.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+3 252 Atk Adaptability Lucario-Mega Meteor Mash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Lugia: 318-376 (76.4 - 90.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+3 252 Atk Adaptability Lucario-Mega Meteor Mash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Giratina: 338-398 (67 - 78.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Heatran calcs aren't as relevant, as its main purpose is to wear down the opponent with passive damage (and it obviously OHKOs Ferrothorn).

I don't think I need to post calcs for Close Combat VS Darkceus and Ferrothorn.

As the new head of the Core Compendium, I have noticed something troubling across the last few iterations of the Break This Team project.
This is not a counterteaming competition. This is an attempt to get the community to find viable, functional cores that work generally well in the meta which the team of the week is weak to.
While I do not hope to discourage creative teambuilding, I hope that these cores will be viable in a general sense and hopefully contribute to the growing Core Compendium!

As such, I encourage slight more viable cores overall that are not geared toward defeating one particular team but can still do extremely well against the team in question.

Happy breaking!

completely did not forget about this,

Gengar-Mega @ Gengarite
Ability: Shadow Tag
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Will-O-Wisp
- Taunt
- Hex
- Sludge Wave

Kyogre-Primal @ Blue Orb
Ability: Primordial Sea
EVs: 248 HP / 148 SpA / 92 SpD / 20 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Rest
- Calm Mind
- Origin Pulse
- Ice Beam

Zenithial's team is pretty solid but Gengar seems to be a glaring weakness. The lack of Gyro Ball on Ferrothorn, no Earth Power / Earthquake on Poison Arceus and no Psychic on Lugia means that our Mega Gengar can easily remove these threats out of the way. Another notable weakness is Primal Kyogre, especially the CM variant. His only check to it is Ferrothorn, which gets trapped by Gengar. When Gengar has removed Ferrothorn, Primal Kyogre can easily sweep the rest of the team as Giratina and Ho-Oh can basically not touch it and Arceus-Dark cannot 1v1 it either. Rest ensures that we can get recovery and get rid of status.
I think this core can consistently beat Zenithial's team unless our Mega Gengar gets frozen by Lugia's Ice Beam.

I'm one cheap person :mehowth:

Rayquaza-Mega @ Choice Band
Ability: Delta Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Ascent
- V-create
- Earthquake
- Outrage

Ho-Oh @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 244 HP / 200 Atk / 52 SpD / 12 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Sacred Fire
- Toxic
- Brave Bird
- Recover

I took a look at this team and figured Mega Ray comes in and breaks most of it. There are hardly any switchins for it.

252+ Atk Choice Band Rayquaza-Mega Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 160 Def Arceus-Poison: 342-404 (77 - 90.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO this one requires chipping if you're trying to deal with this in a 1v1. With Ascent it still 2HKOs.
252+ Atk Choice Band Rayquaza-Mega Dragon Ascent vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Multiscale Lugia: 123-146 (29.5 - 35%) -- 100% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Choice Band Rayquaza-Mega Dragon Ascent vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Lugia: 247-292 (59.3 - 70.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery - this one can survive a 2HKO on a low roll, but if rocks are up, is unable to.
252+ Atk Choice Band Rayquaza-Mega Dragon Ascent vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Ho-Oh: 319-376 (76.8 - 90.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Choice Band Rayquaza-Mega Dragon Ascent vs. 252 HP / 160 Def Arceus-Dark: 309-364 (69.5 - 81.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Rayquaza-Mega Outrage vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Giratina: 524-618 (103.9 - 122.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Rayquaza-Mega Dragon Ascent vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Giratina: 262-309 (51.9 - 61.3%) -- 96.1% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Choice Band Rayquaza-Mega Dragon Ascent vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Ferrothorn: 325-384 (92.3 - 109%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Leftovers recovery

After some support with rocks, this Mega Rayquaza is able to weaken the team significantly, with no true switchin for it. The best role it could possibly serve against Zenithial's team is to break these Pokemon's HO bars significantly, and OHKO the team's best defogger against it. Ho-Oh would be a bit problematic however to stop from using Defog upon being sent out, so you'd likely have to go back to your rock user after hitting it with Dragon Ascent. You could also risk getting a burn off Sacred Fire, harming Ray significantly.

Ho-Oh is made to partner up with Mega Rayquaza to sponge up the Will-O-Wisp Arceus-Poison would love using against Mega Rayquaza, assuming Giratina users would be shaky upon this decision. It also inflicts Toxic on these bulky Pokemon in order to chip them enough for Mega Rayquaza to break right through them in no time. Ferrothorn can also be a burden if it manages to be sent in on Mega Rayquaza, survives an attack (Dragon Ascent or EQ), then manages to use Leech Seed and Protect. Ho-Oh can be a switchin for Ferrothorn and is able to pressure it out. When thinking of this core, Ho-Oh over Primal Groudon, who also fits the roles above, simply because of its recovery by Regen, allowing it to impact more Pokemon.

Ho-Oh is able to deal significant amounts of damage to Pokemon the Mega Ray set above would have the most trouble with, being the two Arceus
200+ Atk Life Orb Ho-Oh Sacred Fire vs. 252 HP / 160 Def Arceus-Poison: 169-200 (38 - 45%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
200+ Atk Life Orb Ho-Oh Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 160 Def Arceus-Poison: 203-239 (45.7 - 53.8%) -- 43.8% chance to 2HKO

With the 50% chance of burn you either pressure Arceus-Poison to spam recovery then on a successful predict, switch to Mray or you 2HKO it after rocks are up.

These same calcs apply to Arceus-Dark but it's suggested you use Brave Bird exclusively over Sacred Fire to ensure you can pull off Toxic and pressure this Pokemon from setting up.

Well anyway, this is the core. While it has some flaws in concerns to requiring external factors (a rocker, a defogger, and a cleric), once all those are placed in the two would get things done significantly easier than how it looks by the calculations above.[/hide]

Kyogre-Primal @ Blue Orb
Ability: Primordial Sea
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Water Spout
- Origin Pulse
- Ice Beam
- Calm Mind

Zygarde-Complete @ Leftovers
Ability: Power Construct
EVs: 24 HP / 252 Atk / 232 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Thousand Arrows
- Toxic
- Substitute

The first thing I noticed about Zenithial's team is that it carries no Heal Bell or Aromatherapy support. Zygarde can quite freely inflict Toxic on the switch in or after a substitute on its switch-ins, and put a timer on its checks. In general, the pokemon which do resist Toxic are the ones that Zygarde beat anyway which holds true for Zenithial's team as well, in that Ferrothorn is easily setup on and Poisonceus cannot take two +1 Thousand Arrows. Lugia and Darkceus' ability to check Zygarde will be greatly diminished after a Toxic on both, with Lugia unable to keep Multiscale up and as such being threatened by much more mons and Darkceus being Sub-stalled. While Giratina can take a Toxic relatively well due to Rest, this now allows Kyogre to freely come in on Giratina or a predicted switch to Giratina.

Kyogre's sheer power allows it to rend through even resists with Water Spout, however you have to be careful in removing rocks and ensuring Toxic doesn't land on Kyogre in order to keep full power with Spout. Giratina can't come into an Ice Beam or Spout and Ferrothorn cannot come into a Spout easily and their lack of reliable recovery makes this a greater issue as well. Kyogre can setup CM on a predicted protect from Ferrothorn or on a resting Giratina and proceed to OHKO everything else on the team while 2HKOing them two. Essentially on every free switch in it gets it can claim a free kill and is only really offensively threatened by Poisonceus and Zygarde can just switch into a predicted Acid Downpour from it or a Poison Jab (although it fears a poison status.) Since Zygarde 50% outspeeds Poisonceus, it can setup a Substitute before a Wisp and then proceed to setup again. Kyogre and Zygarde can work together extremely well and threaten this team greatly. You could run Timid on Kyogre to outspeed Poisonceus but its not really worth it, and against other teams it will only really let you outpace fellow 279 speeds, some Arceuses and Yveltal.

Kyogre
252+ SpA Kyogre-Primal Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Ferrothorn in Heavy Rain: 168-198 (47.7 - 56.2%) -- 25.8% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ SpA Kyogre-Primal Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 4 SpD Giratina: 236-278 (46.9 - 55.2%) -- 14.1% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Kyogre-Primal Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 248 HP / 4 SpD Giratina in Heavy Rain: 220-259 (43.7 - 51.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

+1 252+ SpA Kyogre-Primal Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 248 HP / 4 SpD Giratina in Heavy Rain: 329-387 (65.4 - 76.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Zygarde

All calcs are after +1 as damage before then is tiny, and setting up isn't too difficult against this team.
+1 252+ Atk Zygarde-Complete Thousand Arrows vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Ho-Oh: 156-184 (37.5 - 44.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252+ Atk Zygarde-Complete Thousand Arrows vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Ho-Oh: 312-367 (75.1 - 88.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery (After being grounded)
+1 252+ Atk Zygarde-Complete Thousand Arrows vs. 252 HP / 160+ Def Arceus-Poison: 276-326 (62.1 - 73.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+1 252+ Atk Zygarde-Complete Thousand Arrows vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Lugia: 121-144 (29.1 - 34.6%) -- 100% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery (After Multiscale is removed, the damage is pretty insignificant but the ability to provide Toxic is invaluable)

+1 252+ Atk Zygarde-Complete Thousand Arrows vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Giratina: 127-151 (25.2 - 30%) -- 0.1% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery (Again, it is tiny damage but with Toxic eventually it will have to rest providing much more opportunity for teammates like Kyogre.)

+1 252+ Atk Zygarde-Complete Thousand Arrows vs. 252 HP / 160 Def Arceus-Dark: 151-178 (34 - 40%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

(The calcs look like a mess, so I bolded to help make it easier to skim through)

after realising that mmx can only lure darkceus once, i’m changing my core to perish trap darkceus along with cm darkceus, as no-one else seems to be using it. anyways, cm is really threatening for this team, as 4 of the mons allow it to setup and the only phazer is weak to dark. the only pokemon that can realistically 1v1 it is its own cm darkceus, which is why I added whirlpool + perish song darkceus along with it. the idea is to reveal that you have a cm darkceus and hope that they now automatically switch in their darkceus to yours, only to get trapped and allowing your own cm darkceus to sweep. even if it doesn’t work, perish trap darkceus can win on its own, as no pokemon immediately threatens it, allowing it to trap multiple pokemon.

This Core can result in a good team in general .As for the zen team, grounceus acts pretty much as late game sweeper as it is faster than the whole team while being able to set up a sub on arceus poison and giratina and taking out ho-oh , gengar takes out mainy lugia which can annoy groundceus if rocks are not up while also handling ferro as bullet seed doesnt do much damage to it ,this is pretty much self explanatory and breaks the team on itself and adding a fairy there would be just an overkill.
