CAP 13 CAP 2 - Art Submissions

Hi all

VERY rough draft for critique. A 'lady of war' concept, based mainly on weeping willow and staghorn fern.
IMAGE REDACTED

Yeah, mine is a pumpkin-y one. Not exactly the most unique and my art ain't top notch either, but here we go
IMAGE REDACTED
The basic concept is the main body of the Pokemon belongs in the head pumpkin, like a little slimey sluggy thing, which can control the bigger "body" of the Pokemon to perform various tasks, such as offence (I can see it swinging the head like a weapon) or defence. Comes from areas like the headless horseman and beheadings in general, though for some reason I can imagine a Hamlet scene playing out too...I've an odd mind.

I really liked Flummoxen's concept sketch: an eerie, ethereal lady of the forest. However the wispy, fragile nature of it doesn't lend very well to a somewhat bulky Pokemon. Maybe it could be an angry fat forest ghost lady! It's a direction I'd love artists to explore for CAP2!

Nintendoofus' concept is another one I'm really keen on. Making Pokemon cute is never a bad thing and a plucky Pumpkin kid design could fit the theme really well. It could have a really mischeivous yet naive look which would work great with the bulky Sketch/'unpredictability' idea and still be really adorable!

There have been similar submissions since and other great ideas but these two distill my thoughts on the matter really well! I'd love to see more along these lines!

CAP TIME! :D I honestly look forward to this so much!

Anyway, lots of strong designs so far *gulp* but here are mine, one is a kinda like a ponytail painter leaf plant thing and the other is obviously a scarecrow with a leaf scarf and pumpkin head. But for added layers to the concept it's like he was killed in battle and came back as a scarecrow, hence the military-ish uniform. Any C&C is obviously appreciated! I gotta say I love the pony.

I don't mean to be a Perfect Metapod (yeah I'm bringing that back) but a lot of these concepts don't look... like a ghost type. In almost all of these all I see is just purple or black in one spot in the sprite and they just call it a ghost type, which doesn't work for me. Regardless of if Ghost is a secondary type or not, it should have a little more of a ghostly presence to me if it wants my vote.

Just off the top of my head, mayatraese's concept is FANTASTIC and is my favorite so far.

All I'm trying to say is most of the concepts so far just don't look ghostly enough.

I'm also NOT looking to start an argument.

I really like that painting leaf. The scare crow i find that the military uniform is to much but i really like the leaf thing. It does seem a bit on the psychic side but easely fixed no?

First CAP art submission ever! Apologies for the poor-quality camera shot, if this gets feedback i'll do a version on the computer.

This CAP design is based on a spriggan/dryad, which channels the spirits of its fallen friends and family (and soon to fall enemies) into its own wooden armor, increasing its strength and resilience. Since it can absorb the essence of any dead (or fainted) pokemon, this lets it use any move in the game depending on which pokemon's spirit is being used (hence it's relevant to Sketch!) When its using its Sketched move or it's taking a powerful hit, the markings on its armor glow purple as the spirit is working its magic. CAP2 can also manipulate the wood of its armor into various weapons, such as the blade on its left arm for Leaf Blade, which helps it use a vast variety of attacks.

Ideas for supporting art!
  • CAP2 using Shadow Ball.
  • CAP2 using Flamethrower.
  • CAP2 using Shell Smash.
  • CAP2 using Horn Leech.

I concur with this point. "Ghost" type tends to mean "haunted" in terms of Pokemon design. A haunted shadow, a haunted mummy, a haunted doll, a haunted balloon, a haunted chandelier, a haunted robot. In a more literal sense there's Rotom, a haunted fridge/mower/oven/washer/fan. For this reason I find myself most supporting Energy Blast's design, the haunted bamboo, as our next candidate of haunted objects, as it most directly follows in the sense of ghost types.

i disagree because there are ghost types like frosslass, gengar and sableye who arent just haunted things

Well, it doesn't exactly have to be "haunted", it just has to have something other than one shade of purple while the rest is green or something of that sort. While I think that a haunted idea would be good, it isn't necessary as plenty of ghost types, including the ones you mentioned, aren't haunted in still look plenty gastly to me (no pun intended).

Hi! This is my first CAP Art submission and I hope it will get positive feedback ;)
Without further ado... The Scarecrow..ish..thingy...

It changes its face into peoples lost loved ones to distract them and lead them out in the dark woods...
I think it looks really creepy especially the long "fingers". Wouldn't want that thing to disguise itself as my grandpa and grab hold on me O.o

Well I hope it looks good and will get good feedback, but given the competition I don't think it will get to the final rounds...

Yay, art thread is up.
Here's mine:

IMAGE REDACTED

Based on a Tiki mask, a haunted Pokemon made of wood and leaves that lives deep in the rainforests of exotic islands. They use the leaves on the ends of their arms like paintbrushes to design and color various patterns on their masks.

Now tiki masks come in all sorts of different shapes, sizes, and colors, so there's a lot of room for experimentation with this concept especially with the stat and ability polls coming up to move this CAP in a more specific direction.

this looks pretty similar to shiftry imo

Yeah, I'm gonna say that leaf lady is awesome. I'll agree with what T3hB33 said about it loking psychicy, but it can be fixed just by darkening it a bit. Pony's awesome too.

You may be right, but nowadays, existing that many pokemon, isn't it a bit too difficult to create a pokemon which isn't similar to another one? I'm sure it wasn't on purpose and with the changes aragonbird did on his design (changing the leaves for hands), it looks rather fine to me (:

it doesn't look like shiftry.

Anyway, AlfaTyrogue, you should work on your anatomy. Keep limbs, digits etc. the same length, and ensure that both arms meet in the same place. It's a decent design, just try and keep the proportions right and then you can introduce some colour :) also make sure you decide what direction he's facing, and stick to it.

mayatraese's entry is beautiful but probably requires a less complex colour scheme (same pink for all the petals, for example?). Outside of colour, it is quite a complex design, but the only feature that stands out as overloaded with detail is the rootbrush - perhaps it could be drawn so the individual strands are less distinct?

I actually like the scarecrow much more than the leaf thing. But I think the military uniform might be a bit much, maybe just focus on it being a scarecrow. I also like it because it looks like it could fit the stats being laid out in the stat thread. I know none have been chosen yet, but the community is definitely leaning towards a certain direction.

Thought I would join and submit an idea myself. Pardon the awful shading.
GrassGhostCAPmon-1.png

The Pseudo Skeleton Pokémon
Type: Grass/Ghost
Height: 6’1″
Weight: 180lbs.
"After a long period of growth, the infectious growth on Mushororpse has completely controlled its host. Skelispawn have formed vines that have grown and firmed up to create makeshift bones. These "bones" will re-grow upon being broken, and can be rooted into the corpse of other Pokémon to use their dead bodies as temporary puppets."

So yeah, essentially it comes from a line of mushrooms that mimic skulls and bones to avoid being eaten. I really wanted to capture the feel of a Grass-Ghost pokémon, so I had its design made with a more Halloween-y feeling in mind... Of course, I didn't want to go the obvious route of having a pumpkin, and I didn't make Sketch an important part of its design, knowing that it's just an egg move. Competitive ability and flavor are separate things, after all.

Updated both designs... still not sure which one to pick, though...

mibgestalt-1.jpg

-The Bleeding Heart Mirror. Based off the plant of the aforementioned name and a mirror, of course. Added hints of playing cards/jokers to add a tinge of ghost.
-Reflects the soul of the opponent and copies their moves.

nanamorpha.jpg

-The flytrap shrine maiden. Loosely based off flytraps and carnivorus plants in general, mixed together with a spirit channeler/shrine maiden. The ghost of one, at least.
-She channels the moves rather than copies them. This part of the flavour is what has me leaning towards this design more than the other one, but it looks way too human-like according to feedback...

Your shamaness is gorgeous. I think what I'd personally like to see is a more dynamic pose for your bleeding heart mirror however - seeing it head on is quite bizarre ad leaves a lot to the imagination.

Ok here is my post, Its suppose to represent the dead spirit of nature, something among those lines
http://p.twimg.com/AfSRJYtCIAAR2WK.jpg
It certainly looks like a spirit, and plus the leaves on its root feet can close, and form a shell, someting like this
http://p.twimg.com/AfSRSgfCEAIGyCZ.jpg
Just so it looks bulky, as the CAP project is, and certaintly looks like it can be kinda fast
I accept suggestions and I'll be editing according to any recomendation, thanks

She's actually my favorite of them both, Yilx, you could remove her head-eyes an replace it with something like a smile (black lips or something), that way you can make her "less human" or unataching her head from her body, that could help her and could add another layer to her making the body more of a puppet to the venus over her head (like a bait for other pokes an persons to approach so she can eat them) an would help her to not look like Liligant too much (my only concern really, she kind of looks like a branched evolution of Lilgant's line, altough that probably isn't a back thing)

V0x, I love the face in your sketch. It really plays on a tough grass-type design. The legs make sense, and I see somewhat of a ghost-typing with the shading in the middle. On the other hand, I really don't think the arms, especially the spinny ends of the arms, fit into the drawing. I think it would work better if the arms were straight, and if the leaf body was connected more to the bottom of it. Overall, I'd love to see this in color.

Also, from the first page, Doug, I really like your art that you posted!
My art is horrible, so I will also comment instead. Sorry.

There are a lot of good submissions for CAP2
I'm being honest, its not a generic line :9
but damn, Doug's has me drooling. It just works so damn well(like i can totally see it using sketch and the like) and those masks are gorgeous.

Despite my own submissions, I have to say Ylix's pixie and DougJustDoug's Gloria Swanson take my breath away. I would prefer Swanson without the masks too, those hands looks delightfully nasty, but someone suggested changing the eyes: Please don't! They're perfect.

DJD's concept is great but it just doesn't look like a grass type to me. I mean there are leaves of course, but it looks like a pure dark type to me, if anything. If you tried adding a little bit more grass type-ness you would have my vote.
