CAP 13 CAP 2 - Part 14 - Pokedex Entry Poll 1

This is the poll for Pokedex entries for CAP 2. I was incredibly lenient with these, about as lenient as I was with names or art slates. My criteria for this slate included perfect spelling, correct grammar, simple sentences, length, simple modifiers, and no heavy involvement of other Pokemon in the Pokedex entries. As far as length went, I compared everything to the length of Chandelure's Black Pokedex entry. While this may not be the longest, it's a good guideline. Anything extremely long by comparison was cut. Furthermore, I specifically noted in the thread that I didn't want the Pokedex entries talking about other Pokemon too much, so those that did were cut. You also had to refer to the Pokemon as an 'it' in the Pokedex entries; he/she or his/her would remove the eligibility of your entry. And finally, I specifically requested people don't press the subject of Sketch in the Pokedex entries, so I cut those that were too into 'channeling other spirits' or whatever.

After the aforementioned mandatory cuts, I had to get really critical. There were 21 entries that passed into this next round of slating, and so I needed to be a bit more personal. I decided that it was important for an entry to try and address different aspects of CAP 2's flavor or style or art with the two entries. This means that I removed entries with two Pokedex entries that were too similar to one another. I then cut out any entries that listed specific areas of the PokeWorld, as I didn't want to limit CAP 2 in that way. This left me with 14 entries.

In the last throes of my slate logic, I picked two that I didn't like as much personally as the rest and removed them. This was because of awkward wording, awkward sentence structure, and being awkward in general. This left the twelve entries that you see before you now in the slate. If you didn't make it here, don't worry about it too much; there were way too many entries to slate them all and so I had to pick and choose my favorites. Hopefully you're all happy with my decisions.

I have listed every slated submission's author below in the order they submitted their entries. I've included a link to the corresponding final submission post next to each name via the arrow, but please do not include that in your vote.

This poll operates on the multiple bold voting standard, which is detailed here. A typical vote may look like the following:
First Entry I Like
Second Entry I Like
Third Entry I Like

If the voter wishes, he may post comments on his vote below the actual vote. As with IRV or normal bold voting, only the votes themselves should be bold and none of the supplementary text should be bold.
Please post only your votes in this thread. Do not respond to other posts, or your posts will be moderated and you warned. If you feel compelled to say something in your own vote, you may still do so, but don't try to incite a discussion. Keep discussion to #cap.

This poll will be open for 48 hours.

Below is a detailed showing of the entrants' submissions in the order presented above. I've only quoted the relevant parts here, so check their final submission posts for more details.

Black: The vine that rests on Necturna's head serves as a conduit between it and the spirit world. It has a mind of its own.
White: Necturna will often embrace humans tenderly only to slowly devour them with their jaw-like bodies.
CAP 2 thus far:

Name: Necturna

Concept: Sketch Artist

Description: A Pokemon that learns Sketch, once, and everything that goes along with that.

Justification:

In terms of uniqueness, I think that few existing Pokemon can match DPP Smeargle, an otherwise laughably worthless Pokemon trolling OU with access to every trick in the book (or at least 4 of them) but also affecting the metagame greatly by becoming a top threat in the lead metagame. This Pokemon will borrow some of that uniqueness by learning the move Sketch and thus having access to ONE surprise/strategic/gutshot bonus move to supplement its pre-existing movepool. Being otherwise competently built (read: usable stats), this Poke could be a top threat or specialist for reasons we can't even predict yet.

Questions To Be Answered:

  • How will a Poke that has access to any one move out of all the moves in the game affect common battling tactics, namely prediction, scouting, and switching?
  • Which Sketch moves will become most common on this Poke's best sets? Does Sketchmon's success rely on hiding that secret Sketch move until just the right moment or can it succeed with predictably powerful moves like Spore, Spikes, Hurricane, Shell Smash, etc.?
  • Does this unique and powerful access to moves need to be counterbalanced elsewhere in the Pokemon's design? If so, then to what degree?
  • What kind of impact can Sketchmon have on teambuilding in terms of being able to patch holes with common utility moves like Rapid Spin or Toxic Spikes?
Explanation: The key here is that we have a lot of freedom to construct a unique Pokemon while staying within the confines of the concept. Typing, stats, abilities, and even most of the movepool are completely fair game so long as the Poke learns Sketch only once along the way and that we keep that in mind during previous steps. Now, this doesn't mean the CAP process will be directionless; Rising Dusk is pretty well organized and good at keeping discussions focused, and the concept itself has firm grounding in Smeargle's precedent. What's really being studied with this concept is movepool diversity and effectiveness, so it should have the most effect on the movepool process, where movepool creators will have to carefully balance their Sketchmon's actual movepool with the possibility of adding any one other move to the list. In terms of the metagame, there is no doubt in my mind that throwing a wildcard like this into the mix will strongly affect the metagame.
Focus: Bulky Offense
Typing: Grass / Ghost
Stats: 64 HP / 120 Atk / 100 Def / 85 SpA / 120 SpD / 81 Spe
Abilities: Forewarn / Telepathy (DW)
Movepool:
Primary Checks: Heatran, Jirachi, Skarmory, Hydreigon
Gender: Female

tl;dr: Quack! (Writing really is an art!)

I espouse a sadder, less malevolent Necturna. A Yamask-type Ghost, not a Gengar-type.

edit: I hope someone goes through and fixes all of the LouisCyphers.

I chose these three because I feel they express Necturna very well. I especially like how LouisCyphre goes a little more in-depth about Necturna's past, which is a nice touch. FlareBlitz and Rising_Dusk give a clear, straightforward view of Necturna, which I feel is extremely well done. Good job guys!

Man, I don't have much of a preference :P I picked ones I felt were believable and not awkward in some way (basically stricter than Dusk in that regard). Galladiator's I think is too similar to Engineer Pikachu's and I prefer EP's.

As far as my own submission goes, I only really cared if it got slated, and I just wanted to have fun with this and see what I could flesh out of this very limiting combination of art and movepool. Considering how things got slated, though, it would be great if I advanced once ;) but it's not like I'm all like "I MUST win this" because it's not like name or stats or movepool where your canon goes down the drain because it contradicts the winner's canon.

And of course Rising Dusk puts his own entry tnrough, because he knew his critea and no-one else did...

FlareBlitz, I didn't realize that you had the epithet as "Thorn Spirit" as well. Sorry x_x

In general, I voted for ones that mentioned Necturna's vines and/or the "spirit" sense, since those are what I personally believe to be her more unique aspects. I also tried to steer away from the more morbid ones—I can't really see Necturna as being very malevolent.
