coolest/most unique/most interesting final fantasy characters (spoilers!!)

I enjoy that the guy's art is either loved or much hated.

His "art" personally repulses me and I understand little why so many people enjoy his work. But what do I know about art.

i dunno much about art either, but it's just so markedly different from almost everything else, both in video games and in general. i'm not super fond of the effeminization of all the male characters, but the diaphanous colour choices and whetted contrasts breathe an eerie new life into already established characters, and i guess that's what makes him so hit or miss. most people who played ffvii never imagined the motorcycle scene to look anything like this:

ff7_13.jpg

and neither did i! it's so alien and awkward. i guess i like it for the same reason a lot of people hate it: it's not what we expect. we spend hours and hours controlling this static, ossified character. as the world around him changes, hes stoic, unwavering. then amano comes along and goes 'ACTUALLY GUYS HE LOOKS REALLY GIRLY AND COLOURFUL' and people get kinda mad.

it's a lot like artistic renderings of characters from novels, i think, only instead of the reader-imposed image of the character being shattered, it's the developer-imposed image which makes the whole thing even more indigestible.

amano's exdeath looks fucking SICK btw

All the images are working??

On topic: I enjoy Amano's artistic style, save for the overly effeminate male characters and the sometimes odd color choices.
It's certainly a lot more interesting to look at than most concept art.

it has been edited you're too slowww

exdeaths work fine!

i like nomura but im gonna post some more amano just cause it is pretty and i had fond memories of the vivi and quina art

also a shame that there's basically no point in having amarant in your team once you can because they give him fuck all to do with anything and no real character development

how can a man with hair this big have nothing to add but "that zidane guy.............."

@Ss

It really is a theme throughout FF. The game focuses on 1-3 main protagonists and the rest, at best, get a side story and in the worst cases don't get any form of character development and end up like Amarant, Fran and Gogo.

If one had the ambition, they could probably find an "Amarant" from each game.
Although, most aren't quite as bad.

Actually the game did a pretty decent job of explaining Amarant's character.

Beginning
Amarant started out (in the story) as a man who literally lived only for his pride. His whole life was just to prove his self worth through the best way he could, fighting. As a guard in Trino he received the closest thing to losing by some kid. He was jaded by some punk who didn't even want to fight him. Obviously this severely hurt his precious pride so from then on he vowed to reclaim it one way or another, through a fight to the death. He didn't even care that he was accused of a crime he didn't commit.

Story

Finally! At long last Amarant had his chance to get his revenge on that brat. By now Zidane and his band became pretty famous and he was given the job of retrieving the princess, and putting a stop to the group, permanently. Soon Zidane and Amarant became locked in combat but only after he saved a them, but he only did so for him to truly beat Zidane with no strings attached just to prove he's better than him. To his horror he lost. His pride was smashed and his reason for living gone and to make things worse his opponent didn't even want to finish him. To Amarant this was a huge shock, being the conceited jerk that he was he couldn't see the world through the eyes of others. Seeing that he still had much to learn (No one is that thick headed) he agreed to join there group after he was offered to join during his second confrontation with them.

The Lesson

With his patience reaching its limits, Amarant decided to leave the group at Ipsen castle to finally beat Zidane through the one way he could, his ideals. If Amarant could prove that his way of thinking was superior to Zidane, he could finally reclaim his pride. Having beaten Zidane to his goal, Amarant finally "won". Seeing no reason to stick around he decided to leave for good. Sadly he fell into a pit and was trapped, thinking that since he lived for himself he was destined to die for himself. Then he received the greatest shock of his life. Zidane came back for him. Amarant could not understand, he believed his thought process was flawless. Not only did Zidane prove his point he taught Amarant the value in living for things other than himself. Amarant finally learned the preciousness of life and gained the drive to live.

Conclusion: Amarant went from being the punk that lived for his pride to the man that saw the world through the eyes of himself and others. Amarant is obviously not just a joke character and is one of the deepest character in the entire series. The only unclear thing about him is how he came to his old self but that just about it.

PS: This thread is amazing, you guys are amazing for being genuine FF fans. I'll talk about my top 5 FF characters at a later time.

pkg i appreciate your in depth of the analysis of amarant's arc or w/e and i don't disagree with you on his character, but really that is just two events that illustrate how amarant turned around his world view spun out into a lengthy (though entirely accurate) explanation

he's a cool character and what development he has i like, there just... there really isn't enough of it

freya is pretty badass

i just fired up ffix after seeing all that amano art and i'm loving the graphics even after all these years

(vivi, quina and eiko always and forever)

i dled it over summer on psn and have been replaying it slowly but surely, just hit disc 3

such great memories

Oh haha i get you. If I didn't like Amarant I wouldn't have bothered posting that analysis and call him piece of shit character. I did exempt a few "stupid" tidbits about his character and I may have over-exaggerated a few things, so I find its perfectly understandable that people dislike him.

We can all agree on one thing though.

FF9 was fucking fantastic.

Ffta-h-bluemage.jpg

its not so much a character specifically
but i always thought the blue mage class was pretty cool
the FF7 enemy skill materia sort of sums up what blue mages do
they copy monster attacks and use them as spells

best hume class combo in both of the tactics advance games is blue mage/x(usually hunter/fighter/seer)

definitely the most fun, versatile class in final fantasy games where it is available (and why i use quina)

although ingame cloud was actually kind of goofy and lighthearted compared to the advent children shitheap

That's because before the internet flanderized him he was the most interesting character study in any FF game. Go back and play the game again keeping in mind that he is a nerdy kid 'playing' rogue mercenary. All of the dialogue is fucking perfect. Oddly enough, FF7 is probably best viewed as the story of boy becoming a man.

I was one of those people who hadn't played FFVII until after the tremendous hype and fanboyism ruined it for me. I truly would have loved the game if I hadn't experienced so much incessant proclamation that it was the best game ever and that it had the best characters ever.
I want to try to play it again, but this time with an objective view.
I'll need to mindbleach everything I've experienced in the last ten years in regards to the game to do so. -_-'

I love it when people act as if Final Fantasy wasn't popular before FF7.

Not saying the series wasn't popular. But for a period of time, everyone was claiming FF7 was the greatest thing ever. And between the hype from Advent Children and the ridiculous amount of Cloud/Sephiroth worship. I got sick of the game before even playing it. (It came out when I was 5, so I wasn't really able to play it then.)
