coolest/most unique/most interesting final fantasy characters (spoilers!!)

guys should stop slamming ffvii:ac there was some good stuff amidst all that mess ok!!

That's because before the internet flanderized him he was the most interesting character study in any FF game. Go back and play the game again keeping in mind that he is a nerdy kid 'playing' rogue mercenary. All of the dialogue is fucking perfect.

Yeah, Cloud is far from my favourite FF character, and I really really hated him until *that*, but he is a pretty interesting character. I don't know about MOST interesting, but Cloud gets more hate than he deserves, precisely due to what he's become lately.

Sephiroth still sucks though uh I mean

As for my list (bearing in mind I've played 1-9 and haven't beaten 9 yet):

Minwu (FF2): It's probably mostly because he's the only good fourth party member in the game other than Leon (maybe Josef), but he's one of the best examples out there of a character whose badass character shines through the nearly nonexistent character depiction in NES games, despite only being around until the first boss. (Another good one is Julius from Final Fantasy Adventure.)

Four old men (FF3): Yes, I'm serious. I don't think I've ever seen a "Mr. Satan archetype" (sorry, couldn't find a better name for it) done so brilliantly. Never mind x4.

Kain (FF4): Yeah I said it. Do I need to explain it? Badass armour (I always felt like Kain's sprite looked like an "upgrade" of DK Cecil's sprite), badass Jump animation, and struggles with mind control and coveting his best friend's girlfriend.

Rydia (FF4): One of the most developed characters in FF. She's tempted by the lazy path more times than Harry Potter, lol... She could have wallowed in the misery of her whole village being killed, she could simply have not cast Fire, she could have stayed in the Eidolon village, and considering she spent her growth-burst years with talking animals, she could have just fallen for the advances of the first guy to hit on her. If that's not a strong female character then I don't know what is.

Exdeath (FF5): The most badass villain imo, probably *because* he's sort of a parody villain more than anything. Every time he enters a scene, you know shit is about to go down. Clean and simple. Plus, his castle's made of the corpses of people who pissed him off.

Locke and Shadow (FF6): Pretty much what Jabba said. I especially like Shadow's subtle characterization, and Locke was developed very well.

Terra (FF6): I mention her largely because of how underrated she is. People sometimes blame her for starting an "emo protagonist" trend (though actually to describe any of Terra/Cloud/Squall as "emo" is a gross oversimplification). I suspect that such people are the same people who call Shinji (Eva) a pussy. K, how about you try being used and regarded as a tool, a superweapon, your whole life (and being mind-controlled for at least some of it, though only a dubious Ultimania backstory indicates anything along the lines of how long). This culminates in Terra finally being free in the end, free of even her Esper aspect that shaped her entire life. There's more to Terra letting her hair blow in the wind in the end than people seem to appreciate.

There are way too many great NPCs in FF6 to name, too. If you really think about it, Ultros and Kefka are just the tip of the iceberg here.

Cloud (FF7): Wait, I already talked about him.

Squall (FF8): WAIT DON'T SHOOT ME YET! OK, I get that FF8 crashed and burned on Discs 3 and 4, including Squall's character. People seem to concentrate too long on how the character Squall came to be, rather than Squall's actual character. Being that focused, level-headed, and reasonable is quite an accomplishment, and it makes him a very positive force around others. When others struggle with the idea of violence to prevent violence, or the idea of killing people they don't care about because they're "evil" and/or because someone is paying them to do it, Squall already has all that figured out. It's Rinoa that throws him off. (Too bad Rinoa's such a bad character...)

Zidane (FF9): Very similar to Locke from what I've played. Just a simple, genuinely nice guy who cares about his friends. Also doesn't go overboard with the womanizing.

Vivi (FF9): For one of the laziest-looking designs ever (hey, let's just make Black Mage 3D!!!) he's quite something. I'd probably have more to say if I'd beaten the game, but both he and Zidane have been great characters so far.

That's because before the internet flanderized him he was the most interesting character study in any FF game. Go back and play the game again keeping in mind that he is a nerdy kid 'playing' rogue mercenary. All of the dialogue is fucking perfect. Oddly enough, FF7 is probably best viewed as the story of boy becoming a man.

I fucking love you.

Master from FF1, 'nuff said. That kind of damage output was INSANE. Fuck Warriors, fuck Black Wizards, this guy did so much damage it could make your head spin. Besides, there is nothing more badass then having abs that offer better protection than mythril armor ^_^

If you think the characters from ffvi are shit, and then listed two shitty characters and a cliche "badass" from ffx, maybe you're the one that should get your glasses fixed.

In ffvi, Shadow and Locke alone are enough to make all the ffx characters look like one dimensional characters with annoying voices (they are). Also Leo is the badass that Auron wishes he was.

sorry brah your opinion is straight up wrong. auron's va absolutely nailed it; rikku has an annoying voice for sure though. yuna is a bit awkward, as is tidus, but lulu, auron, kimhari and even wakka have great VAs. as does seymour (i know he's not part of the main crew). fine, auron is a "typical" badass, but the execution of his character is pretty excellent. jecht is cool, too, also with an excellent va.

ff6 is seriously overrated, as are a lot of the earlier ffs. i love those games, dont get me wrong, but i don't think the characters are exceptional. shadow from ff6 is pretty cool, and general leo is a pretty good character as is cyan, but after that the cast is pretty terrible. but people talk about ff6 in such lofty terms, and i just dont see it. kefka is just obnoxious--not a compelling villain at all, and i cant understand the hard-on for him. haha straight up no about locke and shadow being better than all of ffx, just no. kain from ff4 is a cool character as well, but ff5 characters are terrible and the whole satire troupe is giving the game wayyyyyyyy too much credit; it was just sloppy story telling (with awesome gameplay, mind you--one of my fav ffs).

ff9 actually probably has the best all around cast in my opinion. a likeable lead character who is not too serious but not obnoxiously arrogant/optimistic in that characteristically japanese way (think snow from ff13). steiner the straight man for comedic relief; freya and amarant were woefully underdeveloped but still remained interesting. quinna was just... weird, but good weird. vivi is awesome, garnett is a good female character, and even eiko has her charms. my favourite ff.

edit: yeah ffvi was ok, i really didnt find kefka anything special though. 'but he was completely nutso and not a mamas boy!!!!!!!' does not a compelling villain make

can we talk about crisis core for a sec (spoilers obviously)

plot of the game was terrible, many of the characters simply shouldn't have existed, no emotional gravity in the final boss fight, zack's relationship with aerith was done super poorly, etc

BUT the ending mock-battle was so incredibly powerful and well-designed that i definitely teared up during it. there was nothing at all in the game that made me feel any emotional connection between zack and aerith, but the application of the DMW reel into zack's final moments was so potent that i was left heavy-hearted. i've never seen such efficacious use of a game mechanic as a plot device (record of fate in chrono cross comes close though), and that final 'hello-o' was sooooo tragic.

but yeah i think my biggest complaint about cc is that angeal and genesis had no reason to exist. like, why are they there? angeal is ruinous because zack, being a mentor character to cloud, did not need his own mentor, and angeal just depersonalizes the buster sword. ffvii would have been much more touching if the buster sword was zack's from the getgo. i guess his purpose was to give zack some character development (both emotional and physical have you SEEN that scar) but that could have been done without introducing a soldier 1st class who is mysteriously never mentioned in ffvii. genesis is an awful character (and another 1st who is never mentioned in ffvii) and loveless is cringeworthy, so that kinda left a sour taste in my mouth too. i also wasn't totally fond of the way soldier was handled. like, why is zack the only 1st who wasn't part of some jenova project (i know at one point in ffvii cloud mentions that all soldier operatives had jenova cells injected into them but its never really expounded and it might even have been retconned ?_?)? cissnei and hollander were also garbage.

i really like the ffvii universe and i hope that the other additions to the compilation are handled better!!

Fuck every single one of you, the best character hands down is fucking Luso from FFTA2, obviously.

He gets transported to a crazy ass fantasy world and is almost eaten by a chicken, but he just fucking roles with it. The entire point of his journey is to have so much fucking fun he breaks reality and he goes back home then maybe kick some ass and try to bang a cat-girl. This is 100% better than every whiny angst-ridden anime haired protagonist ever created. Also his hat is fucking boss.

But seriously, if you want well written and likable characters go play Nier or Tales of Vesperia, the characters are better than almost every single FF character.

The only thing I really hate about Crisis Core, and it's pretty big, is that Zack fans now always have the same response when I see "he's barely even a walk-on".

But seriously the compendium is super shit and it's even made me change my mind about wanting an FF7 remake. FF6 fans, you can have your remake.

his dick I've always wondered what those pizza-cutter weapons really are. They look like swords, but are more like sawblades without spikes.

This thread keeps getting better.

@ Ala, you do realize Rikku is a jailbait 0_o

@ Verbatim, technically, Kefka was insane because of the (imperfect)magitek infusion.

@Ivar, I agree with the entirety of your post.

@Glen, 100% agreed. CC was shit, but the ending made the game somewhat worth it... i shed manly tears.

@Mr. Hadwick, Luso was alright. Cool design, decent lines but he was flat out "worse" than the other "unique" humans in the game, which was annoying considering he was the MC (Adelle, Frimelda, etc) Definitely better than Marche, who was actually a huge a douche / has a poor design. Ramza is hands down the best FFTactics lead though, no contest.

It really depends on what you play FF for. I've played a lot of old games and so I appreciate that the game doesn't get in your way for the sake of pretty graphics and voice acting. Hell, I appreciate Julius and Minwu... I'm not saying the 2D-era FFs are all better than the PS1-era FFs. FF1/2 are probably best regarded as "practice", but I don't regard 7/8 to be as good as 3/4/5/6... 9 is refreshing so far, though.

My favorites are (not necessarily in order):

Delita
ULTROS
Kefka
Wiegraf
Vincent
Cid Highwind
Adlai Stevenson (Gogo)
Balthier
Quina

-FFVIII, IX (outside of Quina), and FFXIII had the most poorly designed characters of the FFs.

-FFT possibly had the best overall cast and story.

-FFVI deserves more credit than it gets due to underrated dialogue

I dunno about you, but I personally find that Agrias (FFT), Galuf, Faris (FFV), Relm, Setzer, and Shadow (FF6) to be super badass. Kain from FF4 is awesome too. Yuffie from FF7 is also a badass.

Granted I haven't played many of the Final Fantasies outside of 4, 5, 6 and Tactics, but out of all the ones I did play, these characters were my favourites.

I know I'm probably alone on the Agrias one, but I just find her to be such a strong female character, and she doesn't start to wuss out or go emo like a lot of the females I usually see in the final fantasy games. She just rules ass as a knight throughout the entire game, and I was very happy when she finally became a permanent character.

Faris and Relm are generally the same reasons. But for Faris, I found it quite awesome when she could've chosen to stay in the kingdom as princess Sarisa, but she chose fighting over that bullshit. She also looks badass with the long purple hair (I don't really like Amano's art of her, though I don't really like his art in general).

Relm is a special case because despite the fact that both of her parents are gone (or so she thinks since she doesn't know about Shadow), she never goes weak or tries to run away from the group. And also, despite the fact that she's a little kid, she curses like a sailor and even challenges Sabin to a fight. xD I'd say that Terra can learn a thing or two from her when it comes to guts, because I swear, this kid just stares danger right in the face (ie. Ultros), and she never lets the group down.

Yuffie I mainly like because she's a fucking ninja and she carries a massive ninja star on her back, not to mention she's always got that smile on her face.

Setzer is a badass because he fights by throwing cards, darts, and dice at opponents. I also like his awesome coat. xD

Shadow is awesome because he's a fucking ninja, and he has Interceptor, who I like by default because dogs in RPGs are cool no matter what. Also, I like the fact that despite his emotionless exterior, he still risks his ass for everyone on the floating continent, just barely making it back to the airship (or not at all if you don't know what you're doing...), and I especially liked his speech to Terra. It's also cool that you get most of his character development through his nightmares.

Kain is mainly cool for me because he not only looks cool (as do most dragoons), but he's also left-handed, and so am I, which gives him automatic cool points in my book. xD

Galuf is amazing because it's not every day you get an old guy to be in your group, especially one that can put up a hell of a fight. The fact that he kept going against Ex-death despite the fact that he knew he was gonna die if he kept going was awesome. That was the first time in an RPG where you go into a battle and despite the fact that the opponent gets you down to 0 HP, you're still going at it. It was awesome.
