Countdown to XY: A Nostalgia Thread

when i picked up my 3ds the other day the guy at EB games was telling me that they're having a release party, but because of the world-wide launch, all the stores across the world have to do them at the same time, so I don't know if that means that they need to follow Japan time or UTC, or if he's totally wrong and it will just be midnight local time. So I'll either be getting my copy at midnight, 2:00am (Jap) or 11:00am (UTC). Hopefully it does end up being midnight because I plan on marathoning it all night/morning, and letting my 3ds recharge taking a break for Bathurst qualifying (get up Holden), but we'll see how long that lasts

Totally didn't follow this thread, oh well!

Day 1: What is your first memory of Pokémon? Getting a red version cartridge in a garage sale while on vacation.
Day 2: What was your first experience with a shiny Pokémon? Shiny nidoran(f) in silver.
Day 3: How close have you come to "catching 'em all"? In ruby I was only missing Mew, Celebi, and freaking feebas/milotic. :l
Day 4: What was your first level 100 Pokémon? Swampert in Ruby, I never got a lvl 100 in Red, Yellow, Silver, or Crystal.
Day 5: What is your favorite Pokémon and why? Latios/Latias.
Day 6: Which Pokémon rumors did you believe when you were younger? I'm sure quite a few, none that I can remember specifically though.
Day 7: Which aspect of XY are you looking forward to the most? Mega Evolutions.
Day 8: What are your Pokémon "quirks"? Critical Hits.
Day 9: What is your favorite region and why? Kanto - most iconic. (not a genwunner)
Day 10: If you could change one thing about the Pokémon games, what would it be? Remove Critical Hits.
Day 11: What is your favorite mini-game? Dunno.
Day 12: Which song/theme is the most nostalgic? "I wanna be there very best, like no one ever was..."
Day 13: How do Colosseum/XD compare to other main-series games? Didn't play colosseum, XD was great though, I loved the 100 stage thing for the amount of xp it gave, which was how I got most of my lvl 100s in Ruby.
Day 14: If you were given a pill that erases all memory of Pokémon, would you take it? No.
Day 15: Which past feature do you want to return in XY? Join Avenue, a lot of things really though. An easier question would be what I don't want to return.
Day 16: Did you enjoy the experience of starting fresh in BW? I didn't really have a choice haha. I don't have my pokemon from Ruby/DPP anymore anyways (epic sadface)
Day 17: What is your favorite Pokémon movie/anime episode? The first movie.
Day 18: If you could erase one Pokémon from existence, which one would you choose? Garbodor.
Day 19: What is the most unfortunate thing that has happened to you while playing Pokemon? I've missed WoW 8 times in a row before. Maybe there's something else that tops that, nothing I can think of atm.
Day 20: How much did you spoil yourself before launch in previous generations? As much as humanly possible.
Day 21: What are your plans for release day (October 12)? It depends on how much more info is released between now and then. I still can't make a decision on X or Y version.

Hello everyone, I'm new to this site as a member (visiting it since years before). I think this thread is great to introduce oneself^^ and I can't wait for XY... painful 9 days

Day 1:First Memory
All the kids in elementary school were talking about the TV series, so when I arrived home I immediately turned on TV and there it was: Ash getting his angry little Pikachu and their fight against the Spearows. Gah Nostalgia^^

Day 2: First Shiny
I remember that one like it was yesterday... It was in Silver near the Pokémon Day Care Center south to Ducatia City. There it was, a purple Drowzee! "OMG what is that?! My game broke! D:" *flees* I regret nothing, I was to young to know better and it was only a Drowzee. xD

Day 3: How close have you come to "catching 'em all"?
Not even close, back then I just tried to level what I like and nowadays I train the ones I like and the ones for breeding/competetive play.

Day 4: First level 100 Pokémon?
Some kid told me about MissingNo, I don't know which one hit Lvl 100 first xD

Day 5: What is your favorite Pokémon and why?
Scolipede. I didn't like much about the 5th Gen, but Scolipede took my heart in a second. I simply love its design. So elegant and strong looking, then again, that sleepy look in its face. IRL I love all kind of insects and if I wouldn't own other animals, I would already have a millipede.

Day 6: Which Pokémon rumors did you believe when you were younger?
All of them...little me was very unwary

Day 7: Which aspect of XY are you looking forward to the most?
Trainer Customization all the way! I hope I can finally play the girl...unfortunately all clothes I've seen so far for girls are miniskirts, dresses and belly shirts...AND the boy has one option for the hair which looks exactly like me...
At least I won't have to play like that girl from BW xD I hated that one (and the boy had my hairstyle again xD)

Day 8: What are your Pokémon "quirks"?
I have to find the right nickname for the starter before starting the game. Otherwise I am stuck at that point xD... I know I can change the name later, but it has to sound right before that possibility ._.

Day 9: What is your favorite region and why?
Phew...Hoenn? I imagined everything as if it was reality, when I think of it now I don't see pixels, I see real landscapes and they all look beautiful <3

Day 10: If you could change one thing about the Pokémon games, what would it be?
Some graphics in XY still don't fit my taste, despite the fact that it improved so much. I highlly doupt they managed to create real atmosphere with colors and forms... I would add that, too.

Day 11: What is your favorite mini-game?
Pokéathlon! Finally the time to shine for some crappy Mons^^

Day 12: Which song/theme is the most nostalgic?
Even though I play the games since the dawn of civilization, the most nostalgic song is the one from gold/silver when you take your first steps in Kanto. I stopped there and was blown away by the awesomeness of this music.. I think I stood there for 5 minutes.^^ After beating the game I returned multiple times just for the music.

Day 13: How do Colosseum/XD compare to other main-series games?
After Pokémon Stadium, Colosseum was a huge disappiontment for me and I never touched XD. Compared to the main series... Nah, I just don't like them^^

Day 14: If you were given a pill that erases all memory of Pokémon, would you take it?
Never!

Day 15: Which past feature do you want to return in XY?
An improved version of the guy who tells you the IV of your Pokémon x)

Day 16: Did you enjoy the experience of starting fresh in BW?
A clear NO... It was horrible. I loved the games (characters, story), but I missed the old Pokémon so much the whole time. BW2 did the better job...but the story was not that good.

Day 17: What is your favorite Pokémon movie/anime episode?
I'm going to be a Genwunner this time. First Movie was the best imho.

Day 18: If you could erase one Pokémon from existence, which one would you choose?
Only one? Oh that's bad... Jynx!^^

Day 19: What is the most unfortunate thing that has happened to you while playing Pokemon?
Losing my wonderfully reseted Azelf with nearly perfect IVs (It was my first EV trained, too)... I don't know where it went. V-v

Day 20: How much did you spoil yourself before launch in previous generations?
As much as possible... This time I try something new, and now I'm sad because I aleady know the last stages of the starters...

Day 21: What are your plans for release day (October 12)?
Since I've never been so hyped for any pokémon game, I will seriously buy a gift for the mailman who brings me the game. I will wake up early and behave like a little child on Christmas xD I hope I won't die from the hype...

This is uncannily like what I plan on doing! Although I don't think I can get up at midnight for a party :)

Day 21: I probably will get to actually playing it 7 days later on my birthday, but on release day I'll just end up staring over my friend's shoulder as he plays

Go to work at 9:30pm Friday
Get off at 6am Saturday
Drive to wal-mart across the street and grab X
Drive home and... GO ON AN ADVENTURE!

Day 22: Who is the coolest NPC in the Pokémon games?
(Can be a gym leader, Elite Four member, escort partner, regular trainer, etc.)

Day 22: Who is the coolest NPC in the Pokémon games?
(Can be a gym leader, Elite Four member, escort partner, regular trainer, etc.)

N. First person to address unfortunate implications of the Pokemon World. Then the dude had the audacity to interrupt the Elite 4 challenge, and he has at least three rocking themes (Battle Music, Mission Bridge, N's Castle). Then he shows up to give you the most impressive Legend versus Legend fight in the series. Honorable mention goes to Miror B, because Miror B.

Day 22: Who is the coolest NPC in the Pokémon games?
(Can be a gym leader, Elite Four member, escort partner, regular trainer, etc.)
Lorelei, Pryce, Glacia, Candice, and Brycen, of course.

Bad pun aside, I really admire Cynthia. She's the first female champion in the whole franchise, and a bad ass one at that. She uses a well balanced team except for her broken Garchomp and has the second coolest champion theme (Lance tops her theme in my opinion).

Honorable mentions go to Blue, Silver, Lance, N, Colress, Lt. Surge, and Miror B.

I always liked Cynthia cos she is the only female champion in the hand held games. She also has a great team.

Cynthia is literally the only Champion I really like, she's got a certain sense of style, a great theme, one of the harder teams...

Day 1: What is your first memory of Pokémon?
I was at ASPCA summer camp when I was six, and all these kids were trading cards. Someone gave me a holographic Machamp and I got a holographic Articuno in my first booster pack.

Day 2: What was your first experience with a shiny Pokémon?
I caught a shiny Machoke in the Fight Area in Platinum. I guess the Machamp line and I have a special relationship. :P

Day 3: How close have you come to "catching 'em all"?
I've gotten within ~25 in all the games since Platinum.

Day 4: What was your first level 100 Pokémon?
Torterra in Platinum. I've gotten seven to level 100 since then.

Day 5: What is your favorite Pokémon and why?
I can't pick just one! Ampharos (cute, good in-game, fabulous Mega), Snubbull (loved Madame Muchmoney's in the anime), and Donphan (one of the first second generation Pokémon I saw). To get away from the second generation, I also really like Salamence (second one I got to level 100).

Day 6: Which Pokémon rumors did you believe when you were younger?
I didn't hear too many rumors as a kid. I didn't have a computer, and I don't remember my friends talking about Mew under the truck, etc.

Day 7: Which aspect of XY are you looking forward to the most?
I like that I've been able to stay relatively spoiler-free due to the worldwide release, so I'm most looking forward to a totally new, unknown adventure. I actually have Wifi for my 3DS now, so I'll be able to trade and battle with people too.

Day 8: What are your Pokémon "quirks"?
I really like my teams to be gender-balanced: three males, three females. Also, I can't stand to have any Pokémon alone in a PC box, or in a spot where it's not next to any others. It somehow makes it seem really lonely.

Day 9: What is your favorite region and why?
Hard to decide. I like the simple set-up of Kanto, the aesthetic of Johto, and Hoenn has great environments such as the ocean around Mossdeep, Sootopolis, etc.

Day 10: If you could change one thing about the Pokémon games, what would it be?
Is it too obvious to ask for multiple save files?

Day 11: What is your favorite mini-game?
Pokéathlon, hands-down. The only one I've actually had fun with.

Day 12: Which song/theme is the most nostalgic?
The original anime theme song.

Day 13: How do Colosseum/XD compare to other main-series games?
I've never played them.

Day 14: If you were given a pill that erases all memory of Pokémon, would you take it?
No, I'm glad to have gained so much knowledge and so many memories over the years.

Day 15: Which past feature do you want to return in XY?
Another common answer, but I'd love to have Pokémon follow you again. Pokéathlon would be great to have back. I'd really like the Pokétch back too; I think it was the most useful bottom screen device.

Day 16: Did you enjoy the experience of starting fresh in BW?
I did, although it's probably my least favorite region overall.

Day 17: What is your favorite Pokémon movie/anime episode?
Movies 1, 2, 4, and 10 are my favorites. For the TV show, I like the Indigo League/Orange Islands the best, but I think my favorite episode of all might be "Hassle in the Castle." It features the best Team Rocket motto, by far.

Day 18: If you could erase one Pokémon from existence, which one would you choose?
Exeggcute. I don't like to whole egg/seed confusion.

Day 19: What is the most unfortunate thing that has happened to you while playing Pokémon?
Nothing too bad has happened beyond the basic running-out-of-batteries thing back in the day.

I guess this counts, though: I did once accidentally steal someone's copy of Yellow when it was current. I was at my friend's house with a few other people, and we were all playing. I packed my copy of the game away, and when it was time to leave hours later, I forgot I had mine already and grabbed what I thought was my copy from the table. Didn't realize I had two games until a couple weeks later, and no one mentioned they had lost theirs.

Day 20: How much did you spoil yourself before launch in previous generations?
I usually look at the Pokédex, but I'm staying spoiler-free this time except for what is officially revealed.

Day 21: What are your plans for release day (October 12)?
Picking up X and Y, then going home to play them! Wearing my new Charmander shirt, and I know at least one of the Gamestop employees is dressing up like Team Rocket.

Day 22: Who is the coolest NPC in the Pokémon games?
The old guy outside Celadon Gym. Or maybe Warden Slowpoke. :P

I also really like Lance, Giovanni, Cyrus, and the Kimono Girls from Ecruteak.

Day 22: Who is the coolest NPC in the Pokémon games?

N. Not only is he the king of team plasma in BW, but he is a helpful (and significant) NPC in BW2. He is the center of a power plot by Ghetsis, the true ruler of Team Plasma, albeit unwillingly. Furthermore, he has the ability to understand what pokemon say, and his ability was used by Ghetsis to corrupt N into thinking that trainers abuse their pokemon.

He also gets a lot of hate from Team Plasma for doing the right thing and disbanding Team Plasma. It's a shame he doesn't appear more in BW2, but, because he left with Reshiram on a journey to another region, he could appear in future games without much effort, unlike most other characters.

Day 22:
Youngster Joey ofc. Kids a ba. Miror B also is fantastic, and that person who likes wearing shorts (forgot their name)
In terms of people who didn't make me laugh, Volkner has got to be the coolest thing to happen to Pokemon since Master Balls. For whatever reason I fell in love with Volkner and he- no pun intended- sparked my interest in using types I generally didn't like, Electric being the first which led to one of my favorite Pokemon being Raikou. I also LOVE Proton from HGSS and I honestly have no idea why. He's just cool.
Honorable mention goes to Steven for rocking the Pseudo-legends.

Day 22:
Man, Pokemon have had some awesome NPCs.

Gen 1:
Blue/Green/Gary/Asshat. The only rival rival in the Pokemon games. You meet him at the start and he always appears when you least expect him. "Oh hey let's go up this bridge" BAM Gary. "This my be the Cut Master's room" BAM Gary. "I have to be close to getting to Giovanni in Sliph Co" BAM Gary. "I beat the elite 4!" BAM Gary. Always one step ahead of you. Always had more Pokemon than you. He is amazing. Smell ya later
Giovanni. The evil leader of Team Rocket. Responsible for killing Cubone's mother. Took over a city. Then the final gym leader.

Gen 2:
Silver/???. Evil. A pure dick. But he grew. After each time you defeat him he grows and even his Golbat finds happiness and becomes a Crobat. Shows just how you have to care for your Pokemon
Lace. Despite being introduced in Gen 1 he became more than an opponent in Gen 2. If you didn't play gen 1 you didn't know he was a member of the elite 4, he was just a mysterious, yet powerful trainer. If you did you wonder why a member of the elite 4 is helping you in Johto.

Gen 3:
Mirror B. Only played XD but damn, funny as and that music. Loved it

Gen 4:
Cyrus. That guy is the epitome of crazy and evil. I loved it. What he tried to do and how ruthless he was, he was Pokemon's Hitler.

Gen 5:
Sucked and had no one memorable imo

Overall it has to go:
Green, Silver, Mirror B., Cyrus, Giovanni, Lace.

Wattson is so shocking. He gives you a free TM Thunderbolt for turning off his crazy underground man cave.

Day 22: Who is the coolest NPC in the Pokémon games?

Hrmmm... I can't really think of very many people right now, but I'll have to say Drake of the Hoenn Elite Four; no other dragon-type gym leader/Elite Four member can capture his coolness, except maybe Lance. :P

Oooh, this is tough. Despite growing up with GSC and Yellow, my initial pick of best NPC is Cheren. The rivals have the greatest characterization of any pokemon NPC, and Blue is easily the best rival in terms of threat level. But in terms of character development, Cheren advanced the most. Cheren starts off as one of your best buddies who sets off to complete the pokedex with you. When Team Plasma attacks, Cheren is there to help you. In peacetime, Cheren is there to test your skills as well. He's exactly the kind of friend you'd want in the pokemon world. Cheren isn't a slacker either; he beats the Elite 4 right behind you to help take down Ghetsis. Then, he becomes a Gym Leader, while still roughing up on Neo Team Plasma. Cheren is the character that is most like you, the player. He's tough as nails, cares for his pokemon, won't be pushed around, and loves a good battle. He's a darn good rival, and an amazing friend.

Honorable mention goes to the Team Rocket member that says "Hyuck Hyuck Hyuck!"

Prepare for trouble
And make it double
I dont know this verse goes on
but you sure got me turned on

I suck at making poems, and if you thought the coolest NPC were team rocket grunts, no. But really, prepare to what is going to be full-on rant:

- Red (HG/SS): the backstory and the fact that you actually played as him back in the Kanto adventure makes him easily one of my all-time favorites, i always wanted to know what was he doing at Mt. Silver for 3 years bar training, and that is actually something Gamefreak could exploit in future games. Pikachu is one of my favorite pokemon, and its Red's signature, so that gives him even more to like him for. Also, did i mention the badassery?
Pokemon_Trainer_Red_Animated_by_longcat93.gif
aw shit
- Lance: the first time i went up against him in Fire Red i thought i was done for when his dragonite came in to destroy my whole team, in HG/SS i raged so hard because i literally lost 6 times in a row, i couldnt get past even 1 dragonite, hes the only champion to this day to force me into using an uber-status legendary, namely Ho-Oh. His entire design is extremely cool, and the concetration on dragon-types makes him automatically likeable, at least to me.

- Green: am i the oly one who feels a rival isnt a rival without pushing you further each time? the firs ttime i played through Fire Red, i took my rival seriously, specially after he beat me at the second-to-last battle before Victory Road, and when i saw he was the Champion, perfect ending for his character imo, as well a magnificent end to the main storyline. Best rival, and second best champion.

- Blaine: hes just so chill and likeable at HG/SS, he gives 2 **** that his gym got destroyed by a volcano, relaxing at Seafoam Islands.
- Giovanni: while not the best villain, i liked his cold attitude towards pokemon, not hating them or plain out ignoring them, but using them as tools, also, at the end of Fire Red, he accepts his inferiority to Red and goes on solo training, which i think is a great ending for his character as of that part of the franchise.
- Lt. Surge: i want to kill this guy for his puzzle, did he want to start World War III after living through II? hes a pimp tho, a war soldier that used his pokemon to power up his planes and weapons, god. damn.

- Silver: best developed rival, while not the best, but even with game mechanics you get to see the influence Lance and Gold had on him, from being an arrogant douche 10000x worse than Green (and far less skill at teambuilding) to more of an awkward guy that ends up respecting his pokemon.
- Whitney: i hate that milktank, so much. But when she went to cry and refused to give you the badge, i just liked it, it just shows the inmaturity and comedy Gamefreak tends to put in their games, im sure they did that on purpose lmao.
- Clair: well shes a douche, granted, but again, dragon trainer, plus the fact that she claims only Elite Four trainers can stand up to her gives me the sensation i like in a final Gym leader: powerful and arrogant.
- Koga: ninjas, and hes the only Gym leader to get a boostto the Elite Four, i find that awesome :]

- Watson: i just lol with him
- Norman: the only father to actually appear in the pokemon games, and i think GF did a good job with him, he is, imo legitemately difficult for that stage in the game, and tests you to see if you have what you need to go on with your journey, something a parent should always do, at least in pokemon.
- Steven: not really R/S, but in Emerald, he helps you quite a bit at fighting off the bad guys and your journey in general, something the champion is supposed to do, but i guess Wallace just is too faboulus to get along with you until everything seems lost. After-game, he tells you hes at Meteor Falls and fights you Red-style, but w/o as much badassery. I like him as a Champion and i think, given he is the son of Devon corp CEO, he had potential for development.

- Cyrus: hands down best villain in the series, he just wants to create a new, perfect world to his image, and actually almost suceeds at it, The fact that he evolved his Golbat to Crobat still gives me the creeps and makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, but a in general great character imo.
- Volkner: he just looks like Minato, i swear i confused them both the first time i went p agains thim in Platinum. Just like Clair, this guy gives the sense of power and arrogance, but in a more chill way, rather than plain out refusing giving you the badge.
- Cynthia: best champion in the series, nothing else to say. A lot of room for development, but her calm demeanor and help she brings during the entire storyline, plus she respecting you after everything youve done around Sinnoh, makes her the most likeable character in Gen 4 as well. Her team is awesome, in Platinum covering 11 of the 12 maximum possible types, variety, and, above all, Garchomp.

- N: best ritten character in the series, and best rival along with Green if we count him as one. N showed a much deeper personality than any other villain in the series as well as a completely different goal, he was isolated as a kid and was manipulated by Ghetsis. Overall, an awesome character that shows off the franchise's potential when they take it seriously.
- Ghetsis: most EVIL villain in the series. What he did to N is the pinacle of assholeness, in lack of a better word. The change between BW and BW2 is also notable and excelent for his character, from a calm mysterious villain to a mad man that destroys everything in his way.
- Alder: weak, piss weak champion, but i liked the fact that he was in fact trying to convince and talk with the Trainers to stop N's goal, interacting with the people of Unova, as well as the protagonist, whom he has contact much more than most other champions.
