Rhyhorn, sticking to my guns. Also, when I made that point about the manga I was referring specifically to the R/B/G saga, when Red and Green accidentally swap their Pokemon for a chapter. Red has to deal with Green's super-disciplined Pokemon while Green is frustrated by Red's Pokemon's more laid-back attitudes. When they find each other and swap back Green's Machoke (correct me if I'm wrong) has evolved into Machamp.

ALSO! I know this belongs in another forum but before I rewrite my current Pearl I want to catch Giratina and transfer it over to my HG game. I need to get the National Dex to do this and I am just short seeing a Dialga to get it.... Anyone have one they would be willing to temporarily wifi trade to me? I just need it for the pokedex data and then I will send it back. I have lots of poke's to use as collateral if you don't trust me, lol. Let me know!

Can't you see Dialga in Celestic Town at the Elder's House in her book? Been a while since I've played Pearl but I'm pretty sure that's how you do it. Much easier than trading at any rate.

BTW, now that we've got a starter, we need to determine an antagonist. IMO, the antagonist of any plot should be a more rounded, developed character than the protagonist.

Ha ha ha ha. It actually looks like cubone will lend more to the story than rhyhorn would have. He has back story already and he is more sentient and rounded than rhyhorn is... rhyhorn is basically just a wild beast like tauros and stuff, not much personality or brains there. Even says so in its 'dex data.
Umm... hard to say. This week is really busy until about Wednesday night and I need to both start the game and develop a story to go with it that ties into a grittier world with an older protagonist and cubone as the starter. Some of it I have figured out already, but without knowing the starter until last night there was a lot I couldn't fill in yet.
I just want to warn everyone right now that I will be altering some of the events and characters of the Pearl storyline to fit in the older and grittier universe. I am telling you guys now so I don't have to deal with complaints later, lol.
No need to re-open old wounds.
Anyway, since this is an older protagonist, it would be kind of weird for him to still be living with his mom. And in a more realistic world, it wouldn't make sense for him to just be given a Cubone. You don't get things for free in real life. So we need to find an opening scenario in which we learn the protagonist's backstory, he gets Cubone, and we learn the protagonist's name.
