CUSTOM POWER
Tired of not having the right coverage, or even worse, not having a reliable STAB move on your Pokemon? In CUSTOM POWER, your Pokemon can re-purpose their attacks into a new type just by changing their IVs, giving them the coverage or STAB they've always wanted!

Rules:

Mechanic
: The first move in your Pokemon's moveslot is changed to match your Pokemon's Hidden Power type value.
Clauses: OU clauses
Bans: OU banlist, Dragonite
Unbans: N/A

Strategy:

Basic Coverage Strategy: Pokemon that struggle to break through certain checks and counters can now "re-purpose" an attack and gain coverage. For example, Keldeo struggles to break through bulky Grass, Water, and Dragon Pokemon. In Custom Power it can change a move such as Surf, which offers redundant STAB, into a new type to beat those checks/counters. Surf-Ice helps break the Grass and Dragon Pokemon or it can opt for Surf-Electric to hit the Water-types.

Basic STAB Strategy: Pokemon that lack reliable STAB moves are now able to gain them by putting a strong attack in their first moveslot. Kyurem-B misses out on physical Ice STAB normally, but if it runs Return in the first moveslot with the Hidden Power value set for Ice, it gains a powerful Ice-type STAB move.

Other Strategies: Momentum becomes more valuable for certain Pokemon now that they can retype U-turn or Volt Switch. Landorus-T usually carries U-turn to pivot out on the opponent's team, so if you change it to the Flying-type, it maintains its ability to gain momentum while also gaining a Flying STAB move all in one! Electric types use Volt Switch in the same way, but Ground-types are able to absorb the attack with ease. Now they can change Volt Switch to a type such as Ice or Water to punish those Ground-types.

Priority moves are normally limited to a handful of types, and the strongest, Extreme Speed, is a Normal-type move that hits nothing super effectively. Now you can change your priority to revenge certain threats, such as changing Fake Out on Mega Lopunny to the Fighting-type, which allows it to revenge Normal, Rock, Dark, and Steel-types. And with Extreme Speed, Pokemon like Lucario and Arcanine gain strong STAB priority, making them much more threatening.

Some other niche strategies include unblockable Rapid Spin (with Dark), Pursuit-trapping the target of your choice (with Water, allowing Floatzel to trap and remove Fire-types), paralyzing Ground-types (with Dark Thunder Wave), and stronger Foul Plays on support Pokemon (with Steel on Klefki).

Q&A:

Q:
Help! My move didn't change type! What's wrong?
A: Only the first move changes type, so make sure to add the move that you which to change in the first moveslot in the teambuilder. Then make sure your IVs are changed appropriately. If there's still a problem, see the next Question below.

Q: How do you set the IVs on your Pokemon?
A: While in the teambuilder on Pokemon Showdown, adjust the IVs using the table in post #2. Do not add the move Hidden Power in order to manipulate the IVs, as once you remove the attack, the teambuilder will revert the IVs back to normal. (You can also teambuild under the Hidden Type format which doesn't revert IVs if you use the move Hidden Power.)

Q: Why can't I set my IVs to get Normal or Fairy moves?
A: There are no Hidden Power-Normal or Hidden Power-Fairy, so unfortunately you cannot gain coverage with these types.

Q: Why didn't my Talonflame gain priority when I changed Return into the Flying-type?
A: The code looks for the ability Gale Wings before it looks for moves that have changed type, such as with Hidden Power, which means by the time it realizes Return is now a Flying-type, it's already passed the Gale Wings check. However, if you change the type of a move that's originally Flying such as Brave Bird to Fighting, that move will still gain the Gale Wings priority. (See this post for more.)

Q: Will Normal moves that changed type still gain the Pixilate/Refrigerate/Aerilate boost?
A: No, because the -ate abilities are checked by the code after it looks for moves that have changed type, such as with Hidden Power. If you change Hyper Voice to Fire on your Mega Gardevoir, Pixilate will think the move is now a Fire-type attack and won't apply. (See this post for more.)

did you get this meta approved?

There are a lot of crazy things you can do with this - I think one of the more obvious things is that you can make Return / Frustration a powerful coverage move on most Pokemon. You can also do some interesting things, something like, say...

Starmie @ Life Orb
Ability: Analytic
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Rapid Spin [Ice or Dark]
- Hydro Pump
- Psychic
- Ice Beam

...Ice /Dark Rapid Spin. Dark Rapid Spin grants you the best stats, but it doesn't trigger Defiant - either way I think these two are the best ones to use (HP Ice's only stat that drops that matters is Defense). Excadrill can pull off a similar set, although it would definitely appreciate coverage. The reason why I post Starmie is because it shows an example of a mon that has really good coverage already, so instead it uses up its Custom Power for utility purposes.

I'm just gonna provide a little something in case the void in the reserved post needs filling.

viva la darmz
I'll work on code this weekend :]
Also since hard hitting coverage is everywhere, stall can't revolve around just hoping for a resistance. Definifely going to be more difficult to pull off. No mention of Gyarados yet? It gets STAB wooooo

Serperior @ Life Orb
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Wring Out [Fighting]
- Leaf Storm
- Dragon Pulse
- Giga Drain

This may seem gimmicky but Wring Out hitting a poke with full HP have a base power of 120, so it now can hit both Heatran and Skarmory pretty well after +2, no longer walled by either of them.

I mean, wring out also comes off of its piss-weak attack stat, but details.

Anyway something cool is Talonflame, who can now run Return w/ Fighting, Grass or Ice IVs to bring the pain v.s. a number of its usual stops. Also retyping Will-O to dark is cool cause it can no longer give Heatran switch-ins a free boost.

Also THIS IS ANOTHER METAGAME WHERE WE ARE GIVING NOIVERN STAB BOOMBURST!!!!!

Wring Out is Special.

Also this.

Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Return [Dragon/Fighting]
- Dragon Dance
- Flare Blitz
- Earthquake/Dragon Claw (depending on hidden power)

I posted a very similar set a while ago in Metagamiate thread. This one is very similar, having a more powerful Dragon STAB to destroy things, making people wanting to ban Charizard X with 100 BP STAB in No Guard Galaxy. Use Earthquake as a coverage if you make Return as your STAB, or use Dragon Claw if you make Return to be your coverage instead. Return as a Fighting move can be good, because it can replace Superpower, which has a better coverage than Earthquake but hindered by the Attack drop, making it counterproductive with Dragon Dance. But Return as a STAB is generally better.

Oh my bad. That makes literally zero sense lol why is a move which means 'to squeeze' special lol

Shame there's no way to give yourself Fairy coverage. Physical attackers are going to get a lot out of this, as they can give themselves a STAB Return. Some set ideas:

Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
Façade (Flying)
Earthquake
Swords Dance
Roost
Bulky Swords Dance sweeper. Façade is now a Flying move with 140 BP. Earthquake is the alternate STAB. Swords Dance fixes Gliscor's meh Attack, Roost keeps you healthy.

Thundurus @ Lum Berry
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
Sludge Wave (Flying or Ice)
Nasty Plot
Thunderbolt
Psychic / Taunt

You could either give it Flying type for STAB, or Ice for BoltBeam.

sin(pi)

lucky n bad
Lati@s can get Psyshock [Fighting] to finally beat blobs and Heatran, which is cool. In fact special attackers with Psyshock (and Keldeo) become much better in general, as they can hit on both sides with specific coverage
Hoopa becomes even harder to switch into, as if it needed that.
Magnezone can trap more things, with HP Fire for tran or a custom fire move for other steels (it gets Tri Attack which is super neat!)
Cloyster gets STAB or coverage Spike Cannon (Ground provides excellent coverage with Icicle Spear and Rock Blast, missing out on only Bronzong I think )

A lot of cool stuff can be taken straight from Sketchmons and Metagamiate, if people want more ideas.

They're baaaack....

I'm surprised no one has talked about these two in tandem yet. Similarly to AAA, we now have Flying-type Extreme Speed Dragonite and to revenge that, Ice-type Fake Out Weavile. A few things to note:
  • These aren't true -ates, meaning there's no 33% power increase on top of STAB. This also means Weavile can't run Return-Ice alongside Fake Out-Ice.
  • But because these aren't actual abilities, the Pokemon get to keep their old ones, meaning Dragonite can run Multiscale to soften attacks or Inner Focus to ignore Fake Out's flinch.

Enter the new wave of momentum. Raikou sports okay defenses and resists Flying, allowing it to come in on Dragonite as it sets up and then threaten with a Volt Switch-Ice. No longer can a Ground Pokemon switch in hoping to derail the attack! And then there's Landorus-T, who can change U-Turns meh Bug typing into STAB Flying or a new coverage option such as (gasp) Ice.

Sure, Chopin Alkaninoff , you could run Return-Dragon, but consider these:
  • A Swords Dance set with Quick Attack-Fire, or
  • Outrage-Fire. No more recoil!

There are lots of possibilities. Priority should be the initial "king" of the meta, so stuff with Extreme Speed, such as Lucario, are likely to give themselves +2 priority STAB moves, or that coveted Ice coverage. Or maybe Technician Quick Attack-Bug Scizor? Unless of course it's running Pursuit-Steel to trap Fairies. And don't forget hilarious options like Giga Drain-Fire on Mega Sceptile to remove that pesky Ferrothorn all while slurping up some lost HP.

I'll work on code this weekend :]
Also since hard hitting coverage is everywhere, stall can't revolve around just hoping for a resistance. Definifely going to be more difficult to pull off. No mention of Gyarados yet? It gets STAB wooooo
Stall gains access to tools like non-Electric Thunder Wave for crippling Ground types and Electric-absorbing non-Electric cases. (Which is admittedly basically Seaking, Mega Sceptile, and the redundant cases of Marowak and Rhyperior) ie everything that isn't an Electric type or carrying Limber has to fear Paralysis. (Nothing runs Limber) Who needs Glare?

Chansey's Seismic Toss becomes universally effective -and it doesn't even need to sacrifice IVs to achieve this. Same for stuff like Dusclops' Night Shade.

Dragon Tail can be made unblockable, again without sacrificing IVs.

Unblockable Rapid Spin for perfect hazard management. (It's too bad Starmie is the only Rapid Spinner with recovery)

Unaware Dark Stored Power Clefable says hi. If you can't kill me in the next few turns, your entire team dies. Yes, you have a Dark type. No, I don't care.

Counter and Mirror Coat can be made impossible to block, again without need to sacrifice IVs.

Leeching moves -Giga Drain, Drain Punch, and Horn Leech- can be given more generally powerful typings, effectively improving their recovery. Ghost Horn Leech on Trevenant, maybe?

There's probably other stall things I'm not thinking of, and for stall this is often going to be essentially a straight upgrade.

---

Now, of course this is still a pretty big boost to offensive 'mons, with coverage galore.

Here's one odd thought:

Fighting Scald!

Yeah, Emboar is overall Physically inclined, but haven't you always wanted a competent Special move for it? 100 Special Attack isn't that far behind 123 Attack...

Revenge of Metagamiate Omastar: Rock typed Wring Out! Makes Special Shell Smash Omastar a lot more viable.

Victreebel can finally do something about Heatran with Fighting Wring Out.

252+ SpA Life Orb Victreebel Wring Out (Fighting) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Heatran: 218-257 (56.4 - 66.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Ground Wring Out is an easy OHKO, of course, if you feel more comfortable lobbing Solar Beam at Heatran to pop its Air Balloon and then lobbing Ground Wring Out to murder it.

Beware Explosion! Any Pokemon that can blow up can now vaporize your beloved Steel wall (Or gutsy Ghost switch-in), between STAB and a failure to resist its new typing/being outright vulnerable to it!

Special Fighting is also a lot more viable as coverage, since arbitrary moves can be used to achieve it if you don't want to run Focus Blast. Charizard can convert Dragon Pulse, Heat Wave, or heck Solar Beam if you're fine with losing Grass coverage into an anti-Heatran move, for example. Mega Gardevoir can also say "Go die, Heatran" by lobbing a Fighting or Ground Moon Blast. (What else were you going to use Moon Blast for?)

Future Sight is also worth commentary, as it can be changed to an arbitrary type to pressure the enemy and is a 120 BP move. Togekiss lobbing Fairy Future Sight? Mega Slowbro lobbing Water Future Sight? Delphox lobbing Fire Future Sight, keeping non-Heatran Steel types like Skarmory scared to switch in? It's possible. Future Sight isn't very good as coverage, keep in mind, and alas most of the Future Sight users are pure Psychic types and/or have better things to be doing with their time/moveslot, but there's some interesting possibilities here.

Everyone is talking about Espeed or Retyped Hydro Pumps, but here is the king.

Magikarp @ Focus Sash

Azumarill @ Sitrus Berry
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 SpD
Ability: Huge Power
Adamant Nature
- Knock Off [Flying]
- Belly Drum
- Aqua Jet
- Play Rough

Flying Knock Off to hit Mega Venu SE. Pssh, garbage.

So just ignore the garbage and look at KINGKARP up there.

And Eevee General, since Keldeo needs that 110 base power STAB to break stuff, Id replace Hydro Pump with Focus Blast. Dince the standard specs set is Hydro Scald Secret Sword Filler (usually HP).

RIP in kill Diamond Storm 2014-2016 "Rock-Type Psychic/Psyshock is now a thing"

One thing of note, if simply for typing, is that Eelektross now gets both no weaknesses AND nearly perfect coverage in Psuedo-BoltBeam. Electric Types in general seem better now, since they all get BoltBeam in some form.

Here's one odd thought:

Fighting Scald!
Pfft, who needs that when you have Fighting HEAD SMASH boosted by Reckless? We didn't need a planet anyway.

Dude Magikarp jokes stopped being funny 19 years ago did you never get the memo?

Aaaanyway, something cool about Lucario in this meta is that it now has room for coverage as opposed to being forced into running either Iron Tail or Bullet Punch. It can now carry Steel-type coverage with both priority /and/ power (no longer needing to pick between beating Diancie and beating Unaware Clef) alongside Ice Punch (imo Crunch isn't that good in a meta where Jellicent, Doublade and Chandy aren't popular, cause that is the move's biggest draw aside from fixing the coverge issues caused by ESpeed with a type that covers all bases, which is no longer an issue with typed ESpeed). It is just such an awesome cleaner now and 4mss is a thing of the past for it, and I expect it to be near the top of the threatlist.

Edit: G-Luke why run KOff over Return on azu if your aim is to hit a mega .-.

I think one of the most interesting mechanics for this meta isn't added coverage, but the ability to pursuit trap so many different pokemon by altering its type, or being able to do significant damage with knock of to many different pokemon. People often get a dark resist just to absorb knock offs, but with the ability for it to be any type changes that aspect in the teambuilding process.

Everyone is talking about Espeed or Retyped Hydro Pumps, but here is the king.
Magikarp @ Focus Sash
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Ability: Swiftswim
Adamant Nature
- Flail - Water

STAB Flail. It doesnt get better than this.
gamer boy makes a good point, but the REAL problem is that this guy is running Magikarp over Feebas. Feebas can set up its own rain, as well as having Hypnosis and Iron Tail to abuse.
Feebas @ Focus Sash
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Ability: Swift Swim
Adamant Nature
- Flail (Water)
- Hypnosis
- Rain Dance
- Iron Tail

First turn is to Rain Dance and to get to your Sash. Then, you spam Flail, and use Iron Tail once you get to a resist. On the last turn of Rain, if you want to take a risk, you can use Hypnosis to put your foe to sleep and get a good chance to set up Rain Dance again and continue your sweep.

In other news, Malamar and Scizor!

Malamar @ Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Ability: Contrary
Adamant Nature
- Superpower (Psychic)
- Knock Off
- Filler (Protect?)
- Filler (Hypnosis?)

Obvious set is obvious. STAB Superpower.

Scizor @ Leftovers / Scizorite
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Ability: Technician
Adamant Nature
- Aerial Ace / Double Hit / Quick Attack (Fighting/Water/Ground/Fire)
- Bullet Punch
- Bug Bite
- Swords Dance / Roost

Scizor doesn't need Superpower anymore. Aerial Ace-Fighting is effectively 90 BP, Double Hit-Fighting is a little less reliable but more powerful, Quick Attack is priority similar to Bullet Punch (without STAB). Fighting is to do the same things Superpower does, Water can kill Fire-Types (best paired with Quick Attack), Ground has better coverage overall but doesn't hit Ferrothorn SE or Skarmory at all, and Fire is for destroying Ferrothorn but leaves you walled by Heatran. Mix and Match fun!

Medicham @ Medichamite
EVs: 240 Atk / 252 Spe / 16 HP
Ability: Pure Power
Adamant Nature
- Fake Out [Fighting]
- Zen Headbutt
- High Jump Kick
- Bullet Punch
Medicham carrying Double Edge [Ghost] from FRLG will allow it to break past Psychics that previously walled its dual stabs. In fact, any Pokemon can now have access to Ghost/Fighting coverage outside of Gengar thanks to Return or any other attack with decent base power in their arsenal.

It's pretty clear that stall and especially fat balance are heavily disfavored in this meta compared to standard OU, so the way to go is brainless offense. There are so many offensive threats here, but I think I've found a way to both beat them and use them.

Tyranitar @ Chople Berry
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 248 HP / 80 Def / 180 SpD
Impish Nature
IVs: 30 Def / 30 SpD / 30 Spe
- Pursuit [Rock]
- Crunch
- Stealth Rock
- Thunder Wave

Excadrill @ Life Orb
Ability: Sand Rush
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs: 30 Atk / 30 Def
- Return [Ice]
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Swords Dance

Magnezone @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 30 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 Spe
- Thunderbolt [Fire]
- Volt Switch
- Flash Cannon
- Discharge

Azumarill @ Assault Vest
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Atk / 16 SpD
Adamant Nature
IVs: 30 Atk / 30 Def / 30 SpA
- Knock Off [Water]
- Aqua Jet
- Play Rough
- Power-Up Punch

Dragonite @ Lum Berry
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
IVs: 30 HP / 30 Atk / 30 Def / 30 SpA / 30 SpD
- Extreme Speed [Flying]
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
- Dragon Dance

Latios (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 30 Def / 30 SpA / 30 SpD / 30 Spe
- Grass Knot [Fighting]
- Psyshock
- Energy Ball
- Defog

Aside from Espeed spam, mag drill is such a potent core that messes up offense, which will be like the entire meta. So to start we need sand, and hippo doesn't belong on brainless offense so there's ttar. Chople over Smooth Rock because things like talon and lati and whatever will probably have fighting coverage now and stay in, which is where yellow magic comes in too. Rock Pursuit lets you switch into and then pursuit trap weavile, etc.

Since I'm using mag, ice is the best choice for drill because lando is still good; it has flying stab now. Not much else to say; play it like standard drill.

The reason why tbolt is being made into the fire move instead of discharge is because discharge doesn't kill luke but tbolt often does, and always does after 1 LO recoil, and I don't think ferro will be as common here but it can also kill that whereas fire discharge can't. Plus if you're trapping skarm or something discharge is strong enough anyway.

So now we need some glue and variety added onto the amazing triple fighting weak core here. Azu is all around a great mon but importantly it's a backup luke, medicham, and dragonite check, and a Weavile switchin if fsr you didn't pursuit trap it with tar. Knock off water is reliable enough stab to the point where azu's usual 4mss can be avoided. Plus more priority is awesome; aqua jet puts opposing drill in dragonite's espeed range.

So Dragonite is pretty much the best mon in this meta maybe, but get rid of weavile first, or any other ice fakeouters. This is the main sweeper ofc, and drill and azu actually break really well for it. Yache isn't needed because you get flinched by fake out anyway.

Alright this Latios looks strange but it completely makes sense for the team. We need hazard control and something better for rotom (idk if rotom will be popular in this meta but this team is so weak to rotom) and quag. Fighting is the best coverage for latios and grass knot is used as the coverage because everything that fighting is meant to hit weighs a lot. It's 100 or 120 bp on ferro ttar tran mag etc. But this team is also weak to slowbro and again, rotom, so I didn't want the spatk drops from fighting type draco. That's why energy ball is here, slowbro rotom quag. Fighting grass knot and eball don't kill from full a lot of the time but do massive enough damage to where drill and nite can clean up.
