Welcome to the 2024 Old Gens Invitational!

All sets will be Best-of-5.
The higher seed will pick the starting tier, and the loser of the previous game will pick the next tier, with no repeat tiers.
Based on both player's preferences, one tier will be excluded from the list of the tiers that can be picked during a set.

Seeding ties were resolved via deepest placement, second deepest placement, and total Vintage+Classic points, in that order.

If you sent me a list of tiers and do not wish to change it based on who you are playing next week,
you don't need to do anything, and the tournament will officially start on Sunday. If you do, DM/PM me.

If you wish to change your tier order for any other week, please send me a message in via discord or forum PM - at most 24 hours before the current round deadline.

Predictions! Here is me talking out of my ass about the remaining games:

1. DaAwesomeDude1 vs 16. umbry
(SS/SM/XY/BW/DPP)

Tough luck for 1 seed dad1 to be rewarded with playing umbry in the first round. This is a pretty interesting match up as I favor umbry pretty heavily in SS/SM and dad1 in BW/DPP with XY being close to a toss-up, so I could easily see this going the full 5 games. Ultimately I think umbry has a higher chance of winning in BW/DPP than dad1 has to win in SS/SM so I'm giving the nod to umbry.


3. Yoda2798 vs 14. Idyll
(SS/XY/BW/DPP/ADV)

Interesting to see SM being the tier dropped here as I would have expected it to be high on Yoda's preferences in particular given their SM Cup run earlier this year. Tentatively bolding Idyll as I think they have a slight advantage in every tier aside from SS. However I see Yoda's advantage in SS to be more secure than Idyll's in any other tier which puts the pressure on Idyll a bit more. Every set is hype but if I had to choose this would be my highlight this round.


4. Banbadoro vs 13. sundays
(SS/SM/XY/DPP/ADV)

sundays was solid throughout the year in the oldgens circuit (they wouldn't be here if not ofc) but Banbadoro just looked liked a step above all around to me. I wouldn't be suprised to see sundays take 1 or 2 games but I think the superior experience Banbadoro has in these tiers will pay off for him.


6. Amaranth vs 11. SingleThunder
(SS/SM/XY/BW/ADV)

Of all the matchups here I feel like these players might have the most overlap in the tiers they perform best in, so the order the tiers are played will be very interesting to me. SS and XY are the big games here for me, as I feel SingleThunder really wants to win at least one but hopefully both of these to have a good chance of winning the set. Along with the aforementioned tiers SM feels pretty up in the air but I give Amaranth the edge in BW and ADV so bolding Amaranth overall.


7. Actuarily vs 10. zee
(SS/SM/XY/DPP/ADV)

Along with Yoda vs Idyll this is the set I'm most looking forward to. Here we have two oldgens jugurnauts that are comfortable playing any of the tiers availible and where any tier could go either way. Saying that, I do consider zee to be the favorite here mostly due to their strength in XY and ADV especially. I think no BW hurts Acturaily in this set as I view them as one of the strongest players of the tier compared to the field and zee isn't known as a BW player. SM will be interesting if played as I feel neither player is the most comfortable playing it compared to the other tiers. Personally I'm hoping to see SS and DPP being played this set, as both players have shown to be really creative with their teams in these tiers and I want to see more of that. As I said earlier I'm bolding zee but its no slight to Actuarily who could easily win, especially if he can steal a win in XY or ADV.


8. GenOne vs 9. Genesis77
(SS/SM/XY/DPP/ADV)

Experience is a big deal here and I just think Genesis hasn't played quite enough of some of these tiers to be able to take down GenOne. SS and SM I view as being GenOne's tiers to lose, while Genesis is going to need to bank on their prowess in ADV to keep them alive. XY and DPP will be the big battleground tiers here in my opinion, both I can see Genesis winning but I have to favor GenOne in. Genesis has been inactive for a large chunk of the year so I imagine they will need to shake off some rust if they want to win against one of DOU's most consistent oldgen players in GenOne.

Allow me a moment of sentimentality, if you will. This is purportedly sundays's last tournament set; we all know how difficult it is to actually stay retired from mons but I certainly hope he can. Sundays is the reason Team India exists and a driving force behind communities like APTH where everyone has a good time. On to better things (like anything outside mons):boi:
