E3 2011 Conferences Thread

Tbh, I woulda been happy if all they did was come out and announce a new Smash Bros game was in the works. But they didn't. They came out and announced TWO NEW SMASH BROS GAMES were in the works.

Starfox 3DS camera function brought a smile to my face. Super Mario 3D looks great too and Ocarina looks way better than I had previously realised. If I took anything out of this conference, it's that I really want a 3DS now. Before it struck me as really meh, but now it's like...jesus christ I want one.

I expect the WiiU too be a little better than the Wii, but still not strong enough to function as a sole console. Will likely need to buy the new Sony console/new Microsoft console to support it.

I could stop watching right now and still be happy.

I am excited about this as well, but in the back of my mind I wonder if they are going to tone it down a bit to make it compatible with the 3DS? Either that or the 3DS version won't have as many things as the WiiU version.

It's possible but I can't see them handicapping such a killer franchise by nerfing it down to the point where it can run alongside a handheld. They'll be entirely different games with some connectivity aspect if you ask me.

When Reggie says that Pokemon will be avaible at the virtual store I thought "please be Crystal online, please be Crystal online, please be Crystal online"

FUCKERS.

Anyway Sessler interviewed Reggie after the conference and he cleared some stuff up:

  • Wii U IS a new console. The controller is just the driving point, since the console is probably going to be a Wii in HD.
  • Wii U is full 1080p. Wii games are fully backwards compatible but not in HD.
  • He basically took a huge shot at Sony (and to a lesser extent Microsoft) saying "we make revolutionize with our shit and they copy our #swag"
  • Price point, launch lineup, and specs are set, but they're not announcing them now. Probably E3 next year.

Anyway, they showed a really piss poor lineup of 3rd party, sans EA partnership and Assassin's Creed. One game I'd really LOVE to see, and I feel like it'll finally come into its own now with a touch screen controller is Okami. Its probably years down the road but this new controller is PERFECT for brush strokes and the like. Also, maybe a Kirby Canvas Curse sequel, Scribblenauts console version, etc? This really does seem like a whole new immersive experience but I feel like they might go too far towards the casual gamers again if they don't get enough good third party games out/first party games.

One of the big things that no one seemed to mention is the open online system that the EA CEO talked about. Hopefully this will be applying for all the WiiU games and not just the ones from EA...

Also Luigi's Mansion 2, I was salivating...

I was sold on the WiiU when they said you can switch playing the game from your tv to playing it on the screen on the controller. Also I don't know why some of you are confused, it's a NEW CONSOLE, they even said it was.

But I think when that crowd saw Ninja Gaiden 3, they jizzed.

[06:06:11:17:58] <Neptune> I think it captured the charm of kirby perfectly
[06:06:11:17:58] <Bass> because i dont want to spend money on a new handheld
[06:06:11:17:58] <BenVdd> bass : emulator !
[06:06:11:17:59] <BenVdd> no 3D gimmicks, but all of the fun

Started watched at the Nintendo part when they talked about Skyward Sword...
I even thought they would release a new system (separate from the Wii) compatible with Wii games (as Wii was compatible with GC games). For me, it looks like a new add-on to the Wii, but I'm glad they promised they'll release new games around it (as Microsoft announced for their Kinect).

However, I was a little disappointed because they didn't show whether Blue Shells will be removed from Mario Kart 3DS (but that's another story)...

.... No...

It's an actual console, almost completely separate from the wii.

And yeah it looks like a TP sequel (which I am definitely OK with).
Edit: Upon looking more it just looks exactly like Armogohma? Like basically a carbon copy except for the eyes in front. Looks like a sequel.

I don't think it's gonna be a sequel though, that looks like just a remake with a portable item menu (lolwut) and cooler camera angles.

If the awesome new trailer for Skyward Sword wasn't enough, those ten seconds of Zelda HD were phenomenal. I am glad to see that Nintendo is respecting both the Wind Waker and Twilight Princess sides of things. Also, I'm so glad they're finally making Luigi's Mansion in 3D. I've read articles about how the GameCube was originally slanted for 3D with Luigi at the forefront in Luigi's Mansion. Since the technology wasn't there, it's awesome that they're finally revisiting the idea. I wish it would have been a launch title; that would have been pretty historic.

Nintendo made a very strong presence with both Mario and Zelda this year. While they're both awesome in their own rights, I can't wait for this system a year or two after release to see what they have planned for some of their "lesser" franchises. Metroid and Donkey Kong have both had moderate success on the Wii. Pikmin and other classics could see some reboots as well. Overall, I was very happy with Nintendo's performance and am excited to see where the future will take them.

First off, it's a new console that runs off of 1080p graphics. Reggie confirmed this on G4 with the hosts. The controller was the focus point because it's the most innovating part of the console, and good graphics and gameplay "should always be expected". Also, he says that there actually is a list of first party games for launch and an expected price tag, but "we will save that for another day". Nintendo: always pulling our legs throughout the whole thing.

Okay, after thinking about it for a bit, finally came up with an opinion. First off, the opening and the 3DS presentations were top notch. The orchestra celebrating the Zelda series is a classy move. The 3DS games look amazing, especially the Kid Icarus game which has now gone from a "want" to a "need" in my book. Very impressive showing, and were all home runs for me.

Now, on to the Wii U. Yeah, not liking the name personally, and I'm sure hardcore video game fans don't like it. I get the point of why it was called this, though: they really want to emphasize the fact that it's backwards compatible with the Wii and games that people used to enjoy can still enjoy with the new console. That's fine with me, I don't care. The controller is an amazing piece of technology that has a ton of potential. I think the most impressive part of it was the sheer innovation regarding the compatibility of the controller with the console / television. The fact that you can play high quality console games on the controller is impressive. I think the biggest testament to this was the fact that it has so much third party support. The EA support was huge. EA has always considered Nintendo to be a bit on the lower end of "cutting edge", so to see their support may lead to some of their better quality games coming to the Wii U. People can talk all they want about "oh, this is a gimmick", but the fact that major third party designers are loving this does speak to just how awesome this system is (and also how much we actually don't know about it compared to them).

I think the reason why it was so confusing was a mix of both Nintendo's consistent stance on portraying innovation over software and also the fact that the specs (even the console itself) may not even be official. I don't think they came into here to wow the crowd. I think they came in here to wet the taste buds. People are going to be confused and a bit upset because not a whole lot of answers were given, but let's be honest: how many answers does Nintendo give at E3? Remember, the Revolution (Wii) wasn't revealed at E3. I think they use E3 as more of a media update rather than a display. The announcement of Super Smash Brothers for BOTH the Wii U and the 3DS is huge. Absolutely huge. And will probably end up as the biggest name at next year's E3. As for a price tag? I would be content if it was $349.99. It's a very conservative guess, though. It could be $299.99 and wow the crowd or it could be higher (although I doubt it). To me, though, $349.99 seems to be the right price for what the console will offer.

All in all, Nintendo's performance was probably the best presentation-wise in terms of quality. They didn't show enough software to please people at E3, which makes me think that first impressions will give the nod to Sony "winning" this year's E3. Personally, I found their presentation to be just okay. The Vista was less than impressive to me (it seems like it's really clunky and slow), but the new television that separates individual screens is pretty impressive. Microsoft definitely came in last, though, and what worries me is actually the game I look forward to getting: Halo 4. It's coming out for the 360, which leads me to believe that Microsoft may not have a whole lot of concrete plans for the next generation. It might take a while for their next system to come out.

Nintendo definitely has me excited, even though as a gaming fan I am pissed that nothing got shown to me to give me an idea of what is to come. However, the good news: there will definitely be a time in the future when that happens!

Pokemon Snap remake would be really cool for the Wii U controller.. I wish they would announce that..But overall, Nintendo wins the E3 conference no doubt.

I love how Nintendo always makes out their innovative, despite them always having to rely on the same two franchises(Mario and Zelda) to grab their gaming audience, using motion controllers that they seem to forget was being done on the PS2 years before as well as before that and hyping up such dated features(in comparision to the other systems) as HD!!! gaming and touchscreens.

I was at class so I missed all the wiiu stuff. So far it's looking alright though no major things I'm excited for.

The Wii U isn't innovative. That's the main strength the Wii had coming into this generation. This thing doesn't come out for another year and the PS3 + PSV will already have a similar function by this Christmas. By the time the next gen rolls around in 2 or 3 years (presumably) it will have almost no advantages.

Uhhhh, I don't see this system doing nearly as well as the Wii next gen and that's what really worries me. Yes, I'm looking forward to the 3rd Party support and HD Nintendo franchises but I really feel like Nintendo is starting to fall behind.

No Fire Emblem 12.

I am pissed.

You mean 13, right? There was an FE3 remake a la Shadow Dragon that was only released in Japan.

However, the system looks interesting-and as someone else said, an Okami game for the console might look amazing. (also, HD version of Okami's art style might be awesome.)

The Wii U isn't innovative.

You're kidding, right? It's basically a console that you can play on a handheld. Do you know what kind of implications that has for so many genres? I am in particular looking forward to a new FPS Metroid, it would make amazing use of this system.

Honestly, my biggest worry abouy the WiiU is that the controller seems way too big...but that's really a minor worry. Nintendo has always had weird-but-amazing controllers (Gamecube controller still has a special place in my heart). I did not think I would be excited about this console when I first heard about it, but now I kind of am.
