Game Freak hit with another hack, info leaking

The closest I could see would maybe be a battle system built into Pokemon Home, but they'd still have to include UI and functionality to pick a Game Format for things like "does Zacian have its new stats? Is Snow/Hail legal? What's the Pokedex?" and the like, at which point it's too much to sort through compared to the ML games doing that innately. Slowdown and game crashes at tournaments? Eh they're buying the game anyway.
Also Home can barely function as a storage & trade app as it is, the idea of bolting on a battle system to it is horrifying.

And I can't imagine Nintendo would be keen to approve the Mobile version having a way to battle anyway. And no way they bother with the console version.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE OH MY OH MY GOD THRHTYUSD ALAKAKDJHDU AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Huh... Wonder where this would've shown up if it had made it. Kahili's ace, maybe?
What an odd thing to consider for the game. Sylveon was an outlier in XY but it was one that made sense: a new eevee to really show off the first new typing in years.
This would just be....a flying type evolution? On its own? Kind of a random one to do, especially as the only cross-gen of an existing type.

I kind of wonder if it was meant as an Alolan Eevee but that'd be even weirder since it would assuredly not evolve and if you're going to do that we're getting alolan pikachu.

Pretty funny note though. "You'd need the budget of a main character designer to make this stand out so dont bother"

I wonder where this new info is coming from when the leaker claimed they didn't have any gen 7 stuff. Hopefully GameFreak has plugged its security holes by now... cause if not, yikes.

In any event, looks like we are getting some never-before-seen concept art, including real Mimikyu just being kind of a bump or something?

And Hala's profile apparently mentions regional Snorlax, so my guess is it was probably going to be a sumo wrestler or something and someone asked why not just use Hariyama.

I think it's simply that this is where they were really REALLY starting to realise Eevee - and the Eeveelutions - is very popular and wanted to capitalise on that. Only a few years later we'd get Eevee on the front cover of a game after all. So breaking their usual patterns makes sense... though it's strange we haven't seen any attempt since SM; maybe they were just that worried about conflicting with fan designs since there's a bajillion out there

I dunno I think the whole fan design theory is just a theory, unless we have evidence from this leak stating they take that into consideration?

My thing is that I can't see them making these any more simply because with VGC being so big, the game is more subject to new mechanics, edge cases, balance tweaks, etc. between Generations, while most of the "Battle Sim" games have been pretty static all things considered. Stadium 1 was basically an expansion for one set of games, Stadium 2 not much bigger, and Battle Network was very scaled back in content (no Minigames, Colosseums only, no in-game emulator, trade functions rather than "copying" mons, very stripped back Rental System etc).

Nowadays a Battle Simulator would effectively have to update itself every time a new game comes out, lending mostly to Live Service or a "pack-in" title like Tetris 99 that someone would have to maintain, and for a fairly narrow userbase relative to the resources the project takes in. Meanwhile hosting the competitions in-game ensures they're selling units (which I'm thoroughly convinced is the only reason they care about Hack Checks, to make sure someone bought the IoA or Legends Arceus or THToAZ where they put all those juicy mons and tutors rather than genning for free), takes fewer resources, and sells NSO subscriptions to do trades and practice matches over Wi-Fi.

The closest I could see would maybe be a battle system built into Pokemon Home, but they'd still have to include UI and functionality to pick a Game Format for things like "does Zacian have its new stats? It would probably be the case of having another company do it. Hell they have a live service in the form of Unite, so having a live service in the form of a battle sim wouldn't be too unheard of. Plus they managed fine with having battle revolution exist with gen 4, and that was also before the era of wifi battles really taking off. Main series for streamlined adventure, and test those pokemon you raised in a different game with an increased online subscription cost.

It would also be a much better way to test/buff certain mons and abilities instead of waiting a gen and a half for buffs or changes to movesets or stats.

it just sucks that things like battle frontier/dex number get cut due to making a region's culture/writing/lore, and the main series always feels awkward with trying to promote competitive battling but also make a kid friendly rpg.

There’s too much fucking concept art to wade through, but interesting stuff:

We have full concept art of Mega Jynx (from the back / sides), as well as the full concept arts of the Peanuts + their names:

ジマメ "Jimame"
マメージュ "Mameju"

Half of these were posted above, but we also know from the internal docs why they were cut: Mega Jynx - potentially controversial in the west (fucking SIGH), Peanuts - resemblance to an undisclosed company mascot, as well as the design changes to Tyrunt, Mega Houndoom, and Klefki: Tyrunt - resemblance to Agumon, Mega Houndoom - tail tip resembled blood, Klefki - too close of a link to crosses, heaven, and the Vatican

From the SM character sheets, we know Hala’s ace was originally an Alolan Snorlax (which we knew “existed”, but more confirmation is nice), Ilima’s ace was “Chicken 2” (no chickens in Alola), and Kiawe’s ace was “Turtle 3” (implying Turtonator was a 3 stage line)

Peanutmon's cut is such an enigma. Not only do we not know what the mascot they were worried about was but it spooked them so bad as to scrap the mon entirely over visually tweaking it. Planter's maybe?

Also I cannot imagine Kiawe's ace being anything besides Alolan Marowak

Oh and early concept art for DPP:

Mikon was cut a 3rd fucking time… what a cursed Pokémon. And that’s with Huntail and Sharpedo having their rich developmental history spawning multiple gens lol
mildly interesting is that they changed its name from Gonzou (cf 小僧 (edit: kozou), literally "little monk" figuratively and more frequently "kid") to Gonbee.

As an Eeveelution Person I can assure you that I do not want a new Eeveelution under any circumstances ever again whatsoever

i personally agree but im curious about your reasoning behind this, for me its just that (aside from dragon, but lets be real, if fairy was in gen 1 it would've been special and dragon would've been physical) all the special types have an eevee

So one thing that I didn't expect to see was localization documents, for all games up to HGSS!!! Although they're not always direct explanations of Japanese names, some do leak quite a bit into that and it's also interesting to see the deliberate choices made on the localization end.

It's pretty late for me so I can't do all of the documents at this moment (although I certainly wish I could) but here's what I got from a quick look over the gen 1 one:

Pokemon:

- If you've ever wondered what the "gol" in golbat is supposed to be, it makes it sound more kaijuu like, apparently. go figure
- same goes for nidoran - the ran part is supposed to be to make it kaijuu like; the nido is just needle - "cnido" is apparently coincidence
- golduck is, bizarrely, from gold; they even say that "oh it's not actually gold-colored but gold gives off luxury / high level vibes"
- mankey is absolutely not what I thought it was... for the longest time I thought it was a portmanteau of monkey and yankee (like the japanese delinquent - which makes sense since it sees pretty frequent use by the skinheads in rg) - but it's actually "man" and "key" because it's supposed to be the missing link to humans (literally the key to man)... gamefreak naming sense makes no sense but after seeing "yeah lati@s are named after people in plato's works" I will accept even the dumbest explanation if it's from the horse's mouth :(
- farfetch'd is called farfetch'd apparently because they went around the office (I assume NOA or wherever the hell this was translated) and asked people what the thing in its mouth was, to which people apparently responded that it looked like a stick. hence, "fetch" in the name
(potentially influenced name of the item until retcon to leek or whatever later on)
- cloyster apparently from "cluster" and "oyster", all others fortuitous
- electr"ode" because "ode sounds like globe" is the reason given (????????)
- hitmons are from "we wanted to make it hitman (because they're fearsome or whatever) but since it's a pokemon and not a person we made it hitmon"
- the don in rhydon is to make it sound more kaijuu like and they also note the fortuitous similarity to "ride on"
- unsurprising but kangaskhan is indeed based on gengis khan
- goldeen is not supposed to be queen but, of all things, they say it's supposed to be a feminine sounding name and list "eileen" as one example (?_?)
- starmie and staryu are left unexplained beyond the final english translation (i.e. turning it into me and you); japanese staryu (hitodeman) has long been my "why did they name it this" Pokemon top 5, up there with golduck, golbat, and gyarados
- magmar is somewhat boringly just "magma but we wanted it to sound strong so we made the last sound r to drag it out"
- gyarados also left unexplained aaaaa
- lapras left unexplained
- dragonair is in fact from dragon and debonair
- dragonite from dragon and knight
- mew (and mewtwo) from mutate

Moves:

Most of these aren't super interesting but there are a lot of questionable canned names. Many of the names are listed as 直訳 ("direct translation") despite not being direct translations (no, the direct translation of "shadow clones" is not "double team"). "level damage" for "seismic toss" is my favorite dumb canned one. Worth noting that this whole document was written during GS development and they specifically note that Waterfall has to have references to, well, waterfalls because it's a field move in GS that lets you climb waterfalls.

Items:

- Ultra / Great Balls were named as such (and not Great / Hyper) because of trademark reasons, as Super / Hyper Ball were apparently already existing ones
- The Pokedoll was named as such because Clefairy (which is explicitly referenced in the Japanese name of the item) didn't have a set name at this point and also character limitations
- Calling the evolution stones "rocks" was considered but dropped (thank god); they felt "stone" had a better vibe and specifically pointed to Touchstone (the studio) as an example of said vibe in action

Characters:

Nothing super interesting here, but there were thoughts about naming the Gym Leaders plant names at some point, just like in Japanese. Misty was Lilly, Brock was Cypress... and Sabrina was Zinnia!

Category names:

All listed as "direct translation" despite many of them not being direct translations.
