Game Freak hit with another hack, info leaking

Given it's surrounded by a lot of other beta mega concept art and was even found with that beta mega gengar - in fact, are there any final mega designs in this? - I think it's safe to assume Mega Jynx here was simply in the concept stages and would have looked very different later on... but then much like Mega Flygon, they probably couldn't come up with a design they were satisfied with and scrapped it entirely
There was a memo earlier about its model being finalized so it got pretty far along before being scrapped.

Yeah, pretty much. A game that consists of a Natdex Battle Frontier and nothing else would stand a pretty good chance of becoming my favourite in the series.

Honestly quite shocking that nothing like this exists (I mean obviously Stadium was the closest thing and Colo/XD/PBR were also to varying degrees but I mean in the modern era)

Especially when there are fan-created battle sims out there. It's just such a massive exploitable gap

I imagine it's because they want the main games to be the primary avenues of this once presentation values improved. It's likely seen as added value, since you can raise the Pokemon and then immediately take them into battle without having to hit an intermediary (that would itself likely be developed by another party, to make a game that likely wouldn't' sell very well)

Maybe that thought process could change as they move forward (SV doesn't even have a battle tower & official tournaments kept having game crashes...L:A barely had online functionality...and who knows what'll go on with Z-A) but it doesn't read as very surprising to this point....I also can't help but feel if you're going to dedicate a 3D battle game to have everyone in fighting shape that corresponds to the latest generation that it'd. Feel a little weird? That the main game for that generation doesn't have all that?

Ok so throughout all this I've been lurking the Famiboards thread on the leak for additional info. With things winding down I decided to take one last look at the latest messages and found this

"seeing some leaked footage of pokemon SV dated to after the games' launch is kinda making me think the 4chan leak was real; or at least, based on something tangible. because damn, it dramatically fixes some of problems with the look of the game"

Does anyone know what this person is referring to? Not the "4chan leak", I think I know what that's about, but this claim of leaked SV footage with enhanced visuals. I have to assume by default this is bullshit because I'm sure such footage emerging would've been a big DiscourseTM point by now, but is there actually something here?

Maybe something related to this thing about a different lighting engine?

Worth noting that the watermark in two of those images is in fact dated after the release. The aforementioned 4chan leak was claiming a Switch 2 graphics update was in the works, and this might just lend credence to it

If this is the case, we now pray it's still in the cards and hasn't been junked
Hot take but if this was the case I'd like some extra content as well. Give us a traditional third version with expanded story and stuff! I feel like SV has got potential to have so many more things behind

I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't even a Mega Flygon design to begin with. The writer's block can be really difficult to overcome, even if you don't work in a franchise where you are expected to make dozens, if not hundreds of new monster designs every few years.

By after release it's days after. So at that point they were probably focusing on DLC for SV, Z-A probably ramping up further, and Gen 10 getting into the swing of things..
So instead I want to offer the following alternative theories:
1. They booted up the older builds for these screenshots because they were going to reference them in future talks. They didn't use these ones specifically, but they wanted them on hand in case they did.
2. They brought back this build specifically for reference in Z-A, a game we have still not seen in action. They might have wanted to reference either the performance with the lighting engine or textures, or the colors to go for, or just "could we aim for something like this in this type of game instead"
3. The same as 2, but for a reference point for Gen 10 specifically. It clearly didn't pan out for SV, either because of their own issues or the Switch or both (probably more the former though....), but Gen 10 can potentially use Switch 2 or, at least, make use of any extra they learned over the course of developing SV & Z-A. Or just as simple as "hey let's add this to our moodboard".

4: Someone just wanted to see it/save it for personal reasons. I have no clue if a Reel exists in the Japanese video game job market, but it would make perfect sense that some designer wanted proof of what the game could have looked like for their personal portfolio.

The sad thing is I think the OG Chao Garden programmers own the code and no one knows how to do it

The other issue is the purpose of the garden (3D safe area to work as a mini tutorial to get used to controls) kinda got superceded with...more explicit tutorials during gameplay

Unleashed notably was directed with programmers from there (hence the Chao person and mission), though boost gameplay in Chao Garden would be uhhhh. Pretty chaotic to put it mildly

If it's brought back, it better be 100% optional. Emblems being tied to it is annoying

This is extremely unlikely as by the time SV came out, PLZA was probably leaving pre-production.

It being in pre-production doesn't mean they can't be thinking about things like this. Things change over the course of development all the time, especially early on. If they wanted to align with something like this I don't think its that outlandish, even if it was just a last minute "can we be sure any of this is unusable" or "maybe we COULD do something like this as we move forward?" or whatever.

not like I'm saying they are 100% using everything from this specific build in Z-A.

Scarlet & Violet Beta doesn't have your mother greet you as you wake up but a male character. However, things get off when Director Clavell comes in... except it's a copy of the same male character:
So three options:
1. You were going to start with a father (this being his beta model) instead of a mother originally (using his model as a placeholder for Clavell).
2. This is Director Clavell's beta model and they just used him again as a placeholder for the mom model.
3. This is just a random guy NPC they had done and pulled to be placeholder for both mom and Clavell.

Remember that Pokemon: Legends Arceus opening storyboard sketch we couldn't agree the order on? Well, turns out not only was the order figured out (turns out the images were in order, but it went from the bottom up), but then a beta modelling of the scene was found:
Don't know why Dawn is wearing an oni mask.

My thing is that I can't see them making these any more simply because with VGC being so big, the game is more subject to new mechanics, edge cases, balance tweaks, etc. between Generations, while most of the "Battle Sim" games have been pretty static all things considered. Stadium 1 was basically an expansion for one set of games, Stadium 2 not much bigger, and Battle Network was very scaled back in content (no Minigames, Colosseums only, no in-game emulator, trade functions rather than "copying" mons, very stripped back Rental System etc).

Nowadays a Battle Simulator would effectively have to update itself every time a new game comes out, lending mostly to Live Service or a "pack-in" title like Tetris 99 that someone would have to maintain, and for a fairly narrow userbase relative to the resources the project takes in. Meanwhile hosting the competitions in-game ensures they're selling units (which I'm thoroughly convinced is the only reason they care about Hack Checks, to make sure someone bought the IoA or Legends Arceus or THToAZ where they put all those juicy mons and tutors rather than genning for free), takes fewer resources, and sells NSO subscriptions to do trades and practice matches over Wi-Fi.

The closest I could see would maybe be a battle system built into Pokemon Home, but they'd still have to include UI and functionality to pick a Game Format for things like "does Zacian have its new stats? Is Snow/Hail legal? What's the Pokedex?" and the like, at which point it's too much to sort through compared to the ML games doing that innately. Slowdown and game crashes at tournaments? Eh they're buying the game anyway.
