If someone's got the equipment, I've got the access.
Let me up front clarify that my post was in no way meant to suggest y'all should do it, more wondering if it was possible.
However, since I have started the topic up, may I suggest that no actual copies be made (or at least distributed, even to your closest friends) until at least two of these distribution cartridges have been backed up in some way that would allow the two to be compared together. What I'm mostly trying to consider is what Nintendo would try to do in order to stop this cartridge from existing in the wild. The #1 we all know is that, should any official cartridge go missing, Nintendo would probably track it down. However, what would they try and do about copies? Various thoughts come to mind.
For starters, all cartridges could be watermarked so that, should Nintendo find a copy in distribution, they can figure out which Gamestop leaked. That's not good. In addition, this one would seem to be the most feasible to implement (since they could just hide a few unused bytes in the code at a minimum... a serial number, if you will.) As a defensive measure, we should be able to detect this if two different saved cartridges were compared side by side.
Another worry is that Nintendo could have physically modified the cartridge so that if it's copied it would break in some way indicating a copy was made. (If they know the cartridge came from your Gamestop, they could trace it back.) Not sure on the possibility of this one since I'm not familiar with the card readers, I'm afraid (although I consider this to be a pretty remote possibility ; if the DS can read the cartridge without setting something like this off then we know that it can be done.)
The main reason I mention this is because I wouldn't want you to get in big trouble over this, RiptideFugitive. :(
