Gary Gygax, we will all miss him.

Read about it earlier. Sad :(

I know a lot of people here are not big Dungeons and Dragons itself, but even if you aren't RPGs wouldn't be what they are today without D&D and by extension Gygax. It's entirely possible we wouldn't see many of the RPGs we do today(like say, Pokemon) without the success of D&D. Even ignoring that he was a cool guy in general though, he was one of many guest stars who voiced themselves on Futurama which I always appreciate as a fan, especially since he was largely making fun of himself in that episode.

I don't normally like posting in these 'qq famous person died' threads but through a long chain of events smogon probably wouldn't be here today without this guy!

This is pretty sad for people who love DND. RPG Gamers should be sad too (but not really affected so much) by Gary Gygax's death. Live Action Role Players... oh god that's going to be a very pitiful sight to see.

I've tried playing DND 3 times. V2 with Atma (Which was totally messed up in many ways), and two V3.5s with AutomatonOmega. All three failed because Atma's game was really stupid, and Auto has a lot of bad luck when it comes to real life.

First one to make a joke about his age of death gets the idiot award.

There's no such thing as d9 sadly. So we can't do a 6d9 salute to Gary Gygax. 6d9 jokes aside though... not really funny.

gary gygax failed his fortitude save vs. death

should have taken great fortitude but NO

as a proud dnd player this greatly saddens me. he will be missed :(

i win the idiot award

ya that was a pretty stellar joke tpup :P

lol Atlas. I was never a board RPG fan but I acknowledge the importance of D&D in the whole Role Playing Game history. Rest in Peace.

Thanks for making this thread, Calciphoce.

It was sad to see all the D&D boards so depressed yesterday. (They probably still are)

I wonder if Jesus will play a Cleric of Pelor when Gary DMs up there...

RIP Gygax, your impact on gaming will continue till far after today.

Like I said somewhere else...

I hope Dave Arneson gets all this ridiculous tribute that Gygax is getting when he dies, especially seeing as how he is the true father of D&D anyway!

But what's that they say? Nice guys finish last?

Nice guys without capital don't have long lasting effects on the world, unfortunately.

Although I guess it's debatable whether or not it would have ended up working out if Gygax had not had at least some amount of the aforementioned capital. Either way, both of them contributed to the idea, only of them contributed to it commercially. I don't know that that's really an acceptable justification for 'true father of D&D' since it doesn't evolve into what became the first version of D&D without both of them anyway.

I really want to make a bad joke about D&D having two fathers right now.

If he rolled a d12 he might've had the chance to live.

Well not being a big D&D fan, though I can remember drunkenly playing it and throwing steaks at our groups Dwarf, I do appreciate the way RPG has evolved becuase of this.

He will be as sorely missed as the D&D films were to watch

How are you going to miss someone you did not personally know or enjoy the modern works of? If someone out there enjoys stuff that he himself personally alone made past Dungeons and Dragons in the '70s, great, but you can hardly miss someone you do not know on a personal level, and I only postulated the works part because I am sure someone will bring it up, although I personally do not believe you can miss someone you just enjoyed the creation of (unless he had a daily blog or something I am unaware of, since that is daily and personable)

Also, the guy lived about the average life length, so I am sorry, but it pisses me off when people make a big deal out of people dying who enjoyed longevity. The people who die young or who die without ever having anything great in their lives are the ones who deserve the most mourning!

In the way that I just did? I hate how people react to 'celebrity' deaths (I say 'celebrity' since this guy is just a nerd/geek celebrity, so obviously it is not as ridiculous as the Heath Ledger reactions or similar deaths thereof).

i agree about heath ledger but this guy was an integral figure in the creation and evolution of the rpg genre, hes not a 'celebrity'

i guess ghandi was just a pacifist celebrity, and martin luther king junior was just a black person celebrity

not to say gygax is comparable to those two but seriously what the fuck are you even talking about, people are just expressing their sadness at the death of someone who is indirectly responsible for something they like

What I hate, is when people like CK try to tell people what to feel.

It's perfectly reasonable to feel sad at the death of anyone, and if something affects you, then yeah you should post about it.. It's a chance to reflect on someones life and to say what it means to you.

Thinking about it now, this dude has probably had a huge influence on my life, which is pretty crazy since I hardly no anything about him.

Have a nice day.
