Gen V Initial NU Metagame Thread

Specs Sleep Powder isn't unheard of, especially when it means outright beating one of Eggy's counters (of which there are almost none). Most of the time Eggy is just switching in, blasting something with Psychic or Leaf Storm, and then switching out, so putting something to sleep and then switching isn't that far of a stretch of the imagination.

Also, Tank Rhydon is an awesome mon in this meta. I love leading with him to get up Stealth Rock and then blasting shit with QuakeEdge and Megahorn. Having a check to Scarf Braviary and Swellow is a must on almost every team, and almost all of Rhydon's counters are easily checked by Altaria or Cryogonal (except Specs Eggy >.<).

Another beast I've been playing around with is Cincinno. It's like DPP UU Ambipom, only better and with coverage moves. If you haven't played with it, definitely give it a shot, here's the main set.

[SET]
name: Life Orb Attacker
move 1: Tail Slap / Return
move 2: Wake-up Slap
move 3: Rock Blast
move 4: Bullet Seed / Aqua Tail / Work Up
item: Life Orb
ability: Technician
nature: Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

This meta is just so much fun, lol.

You sir, get a cookie. Specs Eggy is a beast. NOTHING switches in safely. NOTHING. The only thing that can kind of switch in is Klinklang, and that takes like 40% from Psychic. Also if I think you're going to switch it in, I'm Sleep Powdering and taking out your check right away. The only thing holding it back somewhat is its low speed, but you can EV it to outspeed all the important slow things (Lanturn and the like). Also it resists water!

ps i smacked around oglemi with it last night, just ask him what he thinks of it xD

Learned my lessons from Gen IV UU. Basically you punish people who have a bulky waters / rocks (and there are plenty of things that can punish them for not having them, like Sawk and Swellow).

Klinklang is comfortably 2HKOd by Leaf Storm. So is Weezing (Specially Defensive can survive. Once.) Magneton is probably the best stop, but can't heal or do much back, and gets KOd on its next switch-in. Scolipede can also take one Leaf Storm. Probably the best counter is Altaria, which has Natural Cure and eats Leaf Storm easily, but it has to have max Special Defense to take two Psychics, and Psyshock will 2HKO.

I've been playing around with SD Pinsir + Scarf Sawk to a decent degree of success. Pinsir breaks several of Sawk's checks, notably Mesprit/Gardevoir and Weezing. Plus Pinsir is very solid in general - Bug-type STAB is pretty good in this meta imo.

This meta is just so much fun, lol.

A great pokémon in this new metagame is Mesprit or the forgotten pixie as I like to call it. It can be use as a bulky stealth rock user and spread paralysis with thunder wave. The sub calm mind set with boltbeam is also pretty good. What's your favorite set?

Mesprit isn't "forgotten," it's the most used Pokemon in this metagame.

With that said, it's definitely the best overall and it's capable of running all kinds of sets. I like to run scarf with U-turn and the like.

I think he meant "forgotten" in comparison with the other pixies, lol.

CM is probably the best set imo, helping beat down standard special walls early game for things like Magmortar. The bulky support set is ok but I don't like how weak it is in general, plus things like Klinklang + Sub set up all over it.

Also I've been running HP Ice on Specs Eggy because SpD Altaria is a bitch. :(

I thought HP Ice was standard on specs eggy? Also to those of you running TrickSpecs Slowking: fuck you UGHHHHH

Slow powerful mons in general are kind of running games higher up on the ladder, because the only thing that can switch into slow powerful mons are other slower bulky mons that get pounded repeatedly!

If it isn't then it should be, lol. Specs Slowking would be much better if it didn't miss out on Regen when it has Trick, otherwise I'd probably use Trick too.

HP Ground is better on Specs Eggy; Psyshock 2HKOs Altaria, while you need a way to smite Magneton and OHKO Klinklang (both of which are way more threatening than some fluffy Dragon), which max HP Eggy can actually act as a decent check to.

The problem with teams full of slow, powerful mons is that they can be very vulnerable to certain fast, powerful mons like Swellow, Scolipede and various Scarfers once they have their checks weakened. The other issue is that things like Machoke are almost completely useless once they get below half HP.

I am so testing Specs Slowking now. Especially as my current team is super-weak to Weezing.

(Peaked #2, Zebraiken? XD)

Ah, yeah, I guess that makes sense. My team doesn't have too much trouble with either Magneton or Klinklang atm but I'll probably play around with HP Ground and Psyshock too. Is there a benchmark worth hitting for Specs Eggy or is it better to just run 252 HP / 252 SpA Modest? I've been running enough to outspeed min Spe Lanturn but I'm not really sure if that's worth it, considering the few Lanturns I've seen have apparently been running some speed. Outpacing Eelektross might be a good idea though.

Yeah, definitely. Scolipede in particular wrecks my slow offensive team if either of my Bug-type resists are even slightly worn down. That's probably because I'm compounding weaknesses with Specs Slowking + Specs Eggy.....

(More like #1 now. :D)

Eggy really wants to outrun Weezing (and by extension Eelektross without Speed invested).

In other news, Scarf Braviary has been extremely underwhelming. It just doesn't have the power Swellow does.

I'd just like to say that Specs Eggy is just absurd in this tier.

He's really like a slow version of Specs Latios in OU. Come in, fire off a ridiculously powerful Leaf Storm, then get outta there. Grass resists are few and far between in NU, so it's very effective and very strong.

Also, Cinccino is awesome.

Just an FYI guys, since Smashpass is now banned in RU, it is also banned in NU. You cannot have a Pokemon with the moves Shell Smash and Baton Pass, but can have either-or. You can also pass any other move you wish.

SmashPass was hardly used here in the first place in all the matches I've fought but okay, that's just one less threat to care about.

SD Lum Pinsir is something that's been really useful for me, especially once faster mons are eliminated: it walks all over most variants of stall that I've played and makes excellent use of STAB Bug which is really good imo. It breaks through Quagsire's Unaware and can bust through Weezing and everything people think counters it, really. It also outspeeds every Psychic-type that I can think of down here (cept uh kadabra) and paves the way for something to spam CC.

This tier sounds so fun!Imma try lots of ctrl f +testing later, gettin ready for the NU tourney!

NU is a lot of fun, trust us!

Just an FYI guys, since Smashpass is now banned in RU, it is also banned in NU. You cannot have a Pokemon with the moves Shell Smash and Baton Pass, but can have either-or. You can also pass any other move you wish.

Didn't see much of Shell Pass but when I did, it was very annoying.

Well Gorebyss, time to finally take down those Slowkings and Quagsires *loads HP Grass shotgun*

thank god smashpass is banned; that was the one thing I hated to see and nobody seemed to use it... why IDFK; it was arguably one of the most powerful things in the meta...

without baton pass, gorebyss is lol.
I dare somebody to try bp/amnesia/iron defence/sub

SmashPass probobly wasn't used down here because quite a large amount of NU players, while they are also here for the diversity their tier provides, they also probobly wanted to escape things they feel are broken in the higher teirs.

SmashPass is also one of those 'honor' things. People know it's cheap. Just like Baton Pass in Gen 3, it was broken, but no-one used it because it simply wasn't fun.

It's funny how RU keeps taking problems out of NU. First Sableye, now Smashpass...

And, yeah, now everyone's going to be noticeing... 'Wait, Gorybass dosen't have to Baton Pass, it can just sweep by itself!.

There's already some RU players calling it broken, so we'll see what happens.

Just thinking of joining the NU metagame and I have a question. How good is pinsir? What is the best possible set for him? He's kinda slow so I'm guessing choice scarf, but...... Mold breaker's huge.

Also, agreed with the statements about exeggutor. Specstor is an absolute monster. Man, I love that thing.
