Ok so I love most music but what I really love is rap. None of that G-Unit shit either, more lyrical stuff like Nas, Eminem and Royce Da 5'9''. Problem is that the standard of rap is worsening and worsening these days and so I'm struggling to find any really good tracks, as I've looked through most of the good lyrical artists. Does anybody have a good rap track that they've been listening to, to recommend?

Mos Def, k-os, K'nan, Sage Francis, Talib Kweli, Blackstar, Aesop Rock, Wu-Tang Clan, there's a lot more, but yeah. Good artists are out there, you just have to find them. Specific tracks I've been diggin' a lot lately... I dunno, I only listen to whole albums, out of respect for the artists.

Nas - Illmatic
Wu-Tang Clan - 36 Chambers
Wu-Tang Clan - Wu-Tang Forever
Wu-Tang Clan - The W
GZA - Liquid Swords
Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
Killah Priest - Heavy Mental
Slick Rick - The Great Adventures of Slick Rick
Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...

MF DOOM, Jaylib, Immortal Technique, Black Star, Madlib, Medaphoar, Quasimoto, Danger Doom...

That's just some, and some of them are the same person but still different.

abdominal (lyrical genius)
best songs are
- the hit song
- vicious battle rap

he usually raps over a DJ Format beat which is fine with me because they are awesome together

"Mosh" by Eminem is one of my favorites by him.

"Shut 'em Down" by LL Cool J is my anthem when I play Super Smash Brothers.

pretty much anything from the anticon label, so...

cLOUDDEAD
doseone
why?
subtle
13 & god
themselves
greenthink
hymie's basement

oh and agreeing with dm that atmosphere is good shit.

OH AND BUSDRIVER FUCKING ROCKS (or raps i guess) http://youtube.com/watch?v=HpP-8tJ-9Js

most of the shit i mentioned is total abstract hip hop/freeverse poetry, btw

Thanks guys. Basics i have to agree with you that those albums you listed are good shit (Illmatic = Best Ever!), ive heard a fair few of them but some of them i havent, so I'll check them out. And I'll download songs from some of the artists that you've suggested n ill tell you what I think...

Hieroglyphics, and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien are great.

"Burnt" is a great song, as is most of Hiero's stuff.

Deltron 3030 is also pretty awesome, but it talks of EXTREMELY abstract stuff.

That Anticon music is definitely going to be some of the weirdest hip hop you'll find. Del is ALWAYS an acceptable answer for any sort of music recommendation, who cares what they're asking for. Basics and Monco got some of the better emcees listed.

As far as producers, where I tend to spend most of my hip hop effort, here are some of my favorites:

Jay Dee (J Dilla)
Madlib (Jaylib as listed earlier is a collaboration between these two)
Prefuse 73 (especially his collab. with The Books)
Nobody
Daedelus
Flying Lotus
Four Tet
MF DOOM (special Herbs is really underrated)
Platinum Pied Pipers

and more. I could go on for forver but I'll stop here I think as far as producers who have released albums of beats.

Anything from Biggie, Pac, Big L, Rakim, GZA, OutKast, KRS-One, Jay-Z will have good lyrical content. Eminem's only really lyrical on like his first 2 albums, otherwise he's just meh =/.

True, especially about Eminem.

I'm not feeling this expressio unius est exclusio alterius you've got going on here. By saying "GZA", and not Wu-Tang Clan, you are implying that the entirety of the Wu-Tang Clan is perhaps not on par with Pac, Big L or Rakim, and I'm not feelin' that, like at all.

If you're feeling adventurous and want to dabble in crazy New School era stuff, try listening to Critical Beatdown by the Ultramagnetic MC's. One of the lost gems imo, and if you're into absolutely bizarre lyrical constructions then you'll love it. I should really do a review, actually.

And yup, Atmosphere are great too. Represent Minnesota

Ultramagnetic MC's is pretty awesome.

I like some Atmosphere, too.

EDIT: I like your sig, Basics.

I feel that GZA is the best out of the Wu-Tang Clan, so I listed him. If I listed everyone that was good lyrically, I'd have way too lengthy a post for such a simple question. Those are just a sample list of good rappers.

And besides, many people have already said Wu-Tang Clan, so stating him over, instead of stating someone that hasn't already been said gives him a much bigger base to choose music from. If I were to say Wu-Tang Clan, he might've just went and looked for Wu-Tang Clan's albums and not his solo content.

Yeah I do agree with the Eminem comment. Hmm well out of those artists I've listened to Biggie, Pac, Rakim and Jay-Z heaps, Outkast and GZA a little bit but I haven't really heard KRS-One much nor Big L so I'll check them out.

And I agree that the whole Wu-Tang-Clan are excellent, but the artists that stand out are Method Man, GZA and Inspectah Deck. Thanks for all the ideas again guys. Atmosphere (who I've only heard like 1 song of) and MF Doom seem to be getting alot of mentions so I'll check them out now.

Um Ghostface?!?! How did you not mention him while listing stand out Wu's?

P.S. Devin the Dude is good for someone that actually came out during the 21st century.

Some of my favorite tracks are:

Honest Expression- Binary Star
Slang Blade- Binary Star
Forest Whitaker- Brother Ali
Self Taught- Brother Ali
Eye Know- De la Soul
Me, Myself and I- De la Soul
Gimme the Loot- Notorious B.I.G.
Lyrical Commission- Celph Titled
On the Eve of War- Jedi Mind Tricks
Anything by Nas (especially Halftime)
