good RPG's

well i haven't seen a thread on them, so i'm posting one. just wondering what are your guys favorite RPG's?

i have yet to beat any of the ones i have, but my favorite would probably be Tales of Symphonia. i'm about 30 hours into the game, and i really like it so far. the story is engaging, even though its a bit predictable and i think the characters interactions can be pretty funny. the dungeons are really fun also.

i also really like Final Fantasy XII so far. the story isn't that great, but the gameplay and graphics are both amazing and it definitely makes up for it. theres also a ton of stuff to explore which makes it cooler.

Xenogears...and uhh Xenogears. The story is incredible among other Japanese RPG's and it also contains my favorite vg character (see avatar). The gameplay may seem a bit dated but you'll be so hooked to the story that it won't matter.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for the SNES is probably my favorite. Even though it is an easy game for the most part, the story is just awesome, the music rocks, the characters are great, and it's just fun to play.

Other Mario RPGs are great as well. I really enjoyed Paper Mario for N64 (and it's now available for Wii Virtual Console!). I haven't had the chance to play Paper Mario: The Thousand Year door for GCN, but it is probably great. I really enjoyed playing Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga for the GBA as well.

Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age are probably the best portable RPGs I have ever played. Great graphics and music for a portable, plus an engaging story make these two great RPGs.

Riviera: The Promised Land probably comes close the Golden Sun games for my favorite portable RPGs. Awesome graphics, great music, good story, plus a really cool and strategic battle system makes me love this game.

Tales of Symphonia was just amazing, I'm glad you are enjoying it. Other Tales games are great too; I purchased Tales of Eternia for the PSP and it is an awesome game as well.

Final Fantasy games are almost always great. Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IX are probably my favorites, and I'm enjoying playing Final Fantasy III for the DS.

I recently finished playing Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King for the PS2, and it was an awesome game. It took me around 90 hours to finally finish it! The orchestrated music was just awesome (I even listen to the soundtrack from time to time) and so were the graphics. The story is simple, but very well written and engaging. I'm really looking forward for Dragon Quest IX for the DS.

Some other interesting RPGs I have played include Kingdom of Paradise for PSP (short, but good story and fighting) and Lost Magic for DS (kind of a tactical RPG, but it is played on real time and you have to draw different symbols on the screen to perform magic, which is really cool). And of course Pokémon :toast:

Kingdom Hearts has the best RPG gameplay ever. I just ordered the sequel.

I bought Final Fantasy XII recently, too, and it's a really engaging game. This game turns grinding for levels and items fun!

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is simply amazing, and I wish I could get my hands on its sequel for the DS... other good gba RPGs include the Summon Night: Swordcraft Story series and Riviera, which someone mentioned already.

User "Mizuno" has an awesome taste in rpg's, and I like every game that he mentioned that I've played. My all-time favorite is probably SMRPG:LSS, but I really like a lot of rpgs. Also, user "The Cowardice" reminds me that I should finish Xenogears; I got stuck and never figured out what to do.

FUCK how could I forget the fire emblem series, altough they're more of strategy RPGs they're still unbelivably kickass.

gonna agree with doomsday that Superstar Saga is a godly game, although its sequel doesn't even come close to doing it justice =/

Also Fire Emblem is good.

My favorite has always been Final Fantasy Tactics. Besides that and Pokemon I haven't played that many lately.

Though I've always loved Fire Emblem and the Zelda series.

Since no one else has mentioned it yet, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne was in my opinion one of the best games of the last generation (and I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Okami, it's as much of an RPG as Kingdom Hearts is).

Anyone who knows me will know my answers are Fire Emblem, Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem. Each and every single game of the series rules. Strategy RPGs are awesome.

I enjoy ToS, the Mario RPGs, and the Fire Emblem series.

Which reminds me, I still haven't beaten Chapter 2 on FE4, ARGH.

Fire Emblems are the best.

Fire Emblem 7(self titled)-My favorite ever. If you havent played it, wise up and buy that shit cheap at your local gamestop. The first ever game that made me care intensely about every character in it, and a story unparalleled with awesome.

FE8, A.K.A. The Sacred Stones-For the FE fans. I've played it, and it comparison to the first/7th, it wasnt as good. an eight to the first's 10.

FE9, A.K.A. Path of Radiance for GC is also one of my favorites. Good plot, good subplot, it's just so fun.

All of the series have awesome art, and story, even extending beyond those released in the US.

obligatory Chrono Trigger mention

I'd like to second Doomsday's Swordcraft Story suggestion. That game is fun. Also, if you're not worried about emulation I'd like to suggest giving Lufia 2 for the SNES a try.

Yes, Chrono Trigger was the bomb.

Maybe try Final Fantasy III for the SNES, it's my favorite in the series. Oh, and I forgot about Earthbound. It's the funniest RPG I've played.

Final Fantasy III for the SNES is actually Final Fantasy VI, and you can get it on the GBA and it supposedly is pretty fucking awesome.

lesse...

I realize it's about the most mainstream RPG series there is so there's very little point on me touching on it but the Final Fantasy series is of course very good. My personal favorites are IV, VI, X, and Tactics, but everyone kind of finds their own niche in that series I think.

Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are both great. I think Chrono Cross gets a lot more flack than it deserves; I wasn't big on it on my first time through and largely through the internet I discovered there was an incredible depth to the plot that I had almost completely missed my first time through and now I hold it in very high regard. I think a lot of it's problem is that while it is an amazing game it is an average sequel and many people don't like how things happened after CT ended... Chrono Trigger itself is a lot of fairly light hearted fun, and in general I think is one of the best RPGs ever. A lot of Chrono Triggers staff(as well the staff of several Final Fantasys) is back together again working on Blue Dragon, which comes out next month for the 360 in the US. It sold some silly amount of 360 consoles in Japan and has gotten pretty impressive reviews, based on the hype and the staff I am pretty excited about that but it doesn't really belong in this thread yet I guess!

I have a soft spot for Xenosaga, but it's not something I would suggest to everyone. It embraces the whole 'RPGs are rapidly becoming interactive movies' thing to an extreme degree and I think I spent more time watching the game than playing it. I knew it was going to be that way when I bought it and I enjoyed the movie so I found it to be wonderful, but I wouldn't suggest it to someone who's exclusively looking for gameplay.

Way off in the other direction is Morrowind and Oblivion, which I would also rate as top tier RPGs. They are easily the most open ended RPGs to date I believe(particularly Morrowind), and in general if you like the concept of being immersed in a fantasy world it's a lot of fun. Oblivion reigned it in a bit, with the world a bit smaller but more detailed, and I tend to prefer it but I have some friends who still prefer Morrowind largely because of the sheer size of the world and the amount of things there are to do and to explore.

Fable is another game I consider to be really good; I would definitely suggest the PC version just because it comes with the expansion pack. I was expecting that this game would never actually come out, and in a lot of ways to release it they overpromised and underdelivered but I still think it's a very fun game. Combat is better than in almost any other RPG I can think of, the plot is pretty good and tends to be aimed at a little older audience than most RPGs, and in general I just found it to be a really amazing game. A lot of the systems they used in the game(like the Good/Evil thing for instance) really did a lot to enhance gameplay too although those fucking locusts following me around still drive me crazy. The main gripe I have about this game is that it's amazing but ends far, far too quickly - it's probably about the shortest RPG I've ever played, even with the expansion pack the time it takes to beat the game isn't really respectable. At least the replay value is pretty high...

The last series I want to mention doesn't really get a lot of spotlight but I love it anyway: Breath of Fire. The good games in the series are a little dated (1 an 2 for SNES are solid, but 3 and 4 for PS1 are the best. I wouldn't touch 5), but 3 and 4 especially are really cool. One of the main gimmicks in the series is that the main character is a dragon in human form, and each game has a different dragon system, each time attempting and failing at creating a system where Ryu's dragon forums are neither too strong nor too weak. In general I find games in this series to be enjoyable, lighthearted fun. Breath of Fire 4 had one of my favorite RPG plots, although I think I would find it difficult to defend it being 'good' rather than 'appealing' from a writing standpoint. I'd definitely suggest checking them out.

star ocean 2 is one of my favorite rpgs of all time, and it has arguably the hardest rpg end boss ever!

I always enjoyed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. You HAVE to play it at least twice to do the light side ending and the dark side ending, lol.

I was also a sucker for the original Paper Mario. I don't know why, but I really enjoyed that game; no matter how simple it was.

FFVI for GBA is pretty tight with its additional dungeons and espers.(Espers include Diablos, Leviathan, and Jumbo Cactuar).

Does Fallout count?

Anyways, earth fucking bound.

Several of the later Tales games I am quite fond of, seeing as how I spent many an inebriated night playing them with my college buddies when there was absolutely nothing else to do.

Also lufia 2 or whatever.

For a long time it was Chrono Trigger: great gameplay, soundtrack and had a nice story (not as good as people say). This until I played Legend of Mana for the Playstation. Like Chrono Trigger it has a kickass gameplay and soundtrack. I especially enjoyed Golem building and weapon forging. Other games include Final Fantasy V (the best in the series imo) and Valkyrie Profile.

Some of my favourites have been mentioned before: the Final Fantasy saga (specially FFVI, FFX and FF Tactics), Chrono Trigger, Kingdom Hearts I (the 2nd part), and of course The Legend Of Zelda (Ocarina Of Time is probably the best game I've ever played).

All of those are fairly popular, and pretty much everyone knows about them. However, the Secret of Evermore for the Snes was the culprit that my brother and me started liking the RPGs (Awesome Action RPG with lots of lots of hours of play, and one of the best magic (alchemy) and weapons system that I remember).

Another one that deserves a mention is Grandia II for PS2 (although there are versions for other platforms and I'm pretty sure the one for PS2 is a conversion). This game is just amazing, its storyline is probably the best of all the RPGs I've played (and they are a lot), and the one with more (and more unexpecteds) changes in the story. It's battle system was also totally fresh and extremely playable. I used to fight against mobs that give you wrothless exp just to see the awesome magics (I've never seen any magic/esper/invocation that even resembles the worst of the game. Almost all of the magic were CG, and Zap Cannon (or Zap Dragon, don't recall right now) or Wings/Claw/Mouth of Valmar were plainly amazing to see)

Last, the Disgaea saga is also one of my favourites. Its main characters are one of the most carefully worked, and the storyline is full of absurd, hilarious scenes and dialogues. It has an awesomely crazy level cap at lvl 9999 with tons of main characters and a whole army of secondary characters/monster to reclute/play with. I have recently bought Disgaea 2 even knowing that the main chars have changed (I'll definitively miss Laharl and his obssession to become the Overlord... I'm Laharl, the Overlrord, Mwahahahaha...), bu haven't still played due to not having much time after work.

PS: For those who likes parodys, Final Fantasy III/VI has a superb parody in spanish in the form of Final Farra palito palito palito (stick stick stick), or Final Farra III abreviated, much as the Leillenda de la Cerda: A link to the Pastis or Super Strees Faijter II between other s by Xarneigo productions (Snes roms)

MMORPG would have to be world of warcraft, constantly updating itself, amazing character stories, amazing graphics and a very in-depth game.

I can't think of any great RPG that haven't been mentioned before but my best regards go to Chrono T and C, BoF series and Golden Suns.
