good RPG's

Well Final Fantasy has already been mentioned. Recently I've been playing III a lot. Also I had been spending many hours a day on XII. Completed game once, started over and have quit playing for the time being.

And Tales of Symphonia as well, although I haven't been playing it lately. Been thinking of completing current game.

I haven't seen Skies of Arcadia mentioned in this thread. It's definitely one of my favourite RPGs. It is an enjoyable game overall, which I could keep playing over and over.

Play Growlanser Generations. IMO it is one of the most underrated RPGs of all time.

The storyline is excellent, more so in Growlanser III: The Dual Darkness than in Growlanser II: The Sense of Justice (I would give them an A and a B+ respectively.) The battle system is very FFT like, except that there's a sort of real-time element to it. The customization system is deep, allowing for various different combinations, ranging from improving the range of long-range attacks to getting more swings per attack and so forth. However, there are some combinations that ARE just flat out better than the others, so that sort of limits it a bit.

Finally, the soundtrack, for a synthesized product, is quite excellent.

And I can't think of a better buy than to get two high-quality video games for $30.00.

My favorite RPG has to be Chrono Cross. The game has a fantastically deep plot coupled with a very amazing soundtrack. Though don't expect to catch the plot on a single playthrough. You're gonna have to do some searching on the internet to truly comprehend the sheer magnitude of Cross's story. The "prequel" Chrono Trigger is very good, too.

As far as Final Fantasys go, my favorite was IX. Great characters combined with a great, uplifting story, and great sidequests (Chocobo Hot & Cold is just the best minigame/quest ever) make this a very enjoyable game. V was also good, as was VI, VII, and XII for me.

SRPGs are also among my favorite games. The Disgaea series is one the best examples of a great SRPG. Mind boggling depth in its gameplay and a light hearted story (the 1st has a better story by far while the 2nd's gameplay is easily better). Of course, as some already know based on chat hijacks, I really enjoy the Fire Emblem series. Finally, Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together is also one of the best SRPGs I've ever played and, quite frankly, one of the best games I've ever played. Its only English release was for the PSX, though good luck finding it for under $80. Its still a great game to play, even if you have to play it in Japanese on an SNES emulator. There's a great fansite floating around the interweb that does a bang-up job of translating the fantastic story and options.

Lastly, "action" RPGs like the Tales series are also a lot of fun to play. Most of the time, the story is only passable but the gameplay is just so much fun. Tales of Symphonia and Tales of the Abyss are two great RPGs one should look into (although it's a shame EUers can't play Abyss). The older PSX games (Tales of Destiny, Destiny II, Eternia) are also interesting games, but imo are harder to get into and enjoy than ToS and ToTA . The Star Ocean series is also good (although SO3 sucks for every moment you're not in battle). Hell, anything Tri-Ace makes is great.

I don't seem to play many RPGs as much as I like them. I didn't get a PS2 until last year so maybe that's why. My favourites are Tales of Symphonia and Tales of the Abyss. Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars was awesome too... Don't like the other Mario RPGs though =/

Anything from the Tales series kicks total ass. Right now i'm playing Tales of the Abyss on Unknown mode and it is the hardest game I have played.

I'm surprised no one said Twilight Princess yet considering it's one of the best Wii games.

Well, maybe because Zelda isn't an RPG.

Let's see...

...here I go.
  • Breath of Fire II (SNES, GBA)
  • Final Fantasy II/IVj (SNES, PSX Combo, GBA)
  • Final Fantasy V (SNES, PSX Combo, GBA)
  • Final Fantasy III/VIj (SNES, PSX combo, GBA.)
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES)
  • Chrono Trigger (SNES, PSX Combo)
  • Live-A-Live (Not released in the US) (SNES)
  • Seiken Densetsu 3 ("Secret of Mana 3". Not released in the US.) (SNES)
  • Terranigma (SNES, PAL only)
  • Earthbound (SNES)
  • Tales of Phantasia (SNES, GBA, PSX. The SNES & PSX versions are Japan only.)
  • The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang (SNES)
  • E.V.O.: Search for Eden (SNES)
  • Illusion of Gaia (SNES)
  • Breath of Fire III (PSX)
  • Grandia II (My recommendation: If you have a Dreamcast, get that version only) (Dreamcast, PS2, PC)
  • Grandia III (PS2)
  • Skies of Arcadia (Dreamcast. :Legends for the GameCube. I prefer the Dreamcast version)
  • Kingdom Hearts (PS2)
  • Kingdom Hears II (PS2)
  • Dark Cloud 2 (PS2)
  • Tales of Eternia (PSX, PSP. PSP is Europe only as far as I know.)
  • Tales of Symphonia (GCN, PS2 (PS2 is Japan Only))
I'm sure there's a few more I can recommend, but I can't think of anything thing. I'm not a fan of the Legend of Zelda series, so I can't recommend them despite what anyone says. I'm not smart enough for strategy RPGs, so I can't recommend them either. I'd be inclined to mention Atelier Iris as being recommended, but you get easily sidetracked and lose focus of the game. Also, O-kami is not an RPG. It just has elements of an RPG.

Notes
  • If there's a Tales series to stray away from, it's Destiny.
  • If you have a Dreamcast, then get the RPGs for the Dreamcast. Ignore any "Extras" that might be there on any other port.
  • If there's a Final Fantasy game you should stray away from indefinitely, then it's VIII. (I feel III/VIj is the best)
  • For Tales of Phantasia, don't get the GBA version. It just isn't fun. It messed up everything.
  • Play O-kami. It's more than worth your while.

Earthbound is my favorite by far. I love that game. Next is prolly dragon quest 8 that game is amazing its so long and the world is great.

User "Mizuno" has an awesome taste in rpg's, and I like every game that he mentioned that I've played. My all-time favorite is probably SMRPG:LSS, but I really like a lot of rpgs. Also, user "The Cowardice" reminds me that I should finish Xenogears; I got stuck and never figured out what to do.

FUCK how could I forget the fire emblem series, altough they're more of strategy RPGs they're still unbelivably kickass.

Fire Emblem(including the second one on GBA) and Final Fantasy X are my favorites.

I enjoy Fire Emblem a lot, personally, as well as most FF titles. Mario RPG is awesome.

on the other end of the scale I think both Golden Sun & Breath of Fire are disastrously bad. :)

and for some reason I have a bias against cel shading graphics such as in games like Tales of Symphonia & Dragon Quest 8, both games I didnt particularly like either.

One of my recent favorites, altough not being your traditional RPG, would have to be Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. While this game is quite linear (you can't really explore outside of the missions you are given, altough there is a number of sidequests you can do for experience and other various goodies), it has incredible replay value. You can choose from over 25 characters from the Marvel universe and play with up to 4 at a time. Each character has a selection of special powers you can use with them and can be upgraded over time. There are quite a few unlockables in the game, such as more characters and a harder difficulty. In my opinion this is one awesome game that is a great game to play with your friends.

I've been eyeing this game for a while. It has fucking DEADPOOL and I want to kick ass with Deadpool.

Yeah dude you should definately get it. Deadpool is awesome, and they even added in his signature wisecracking (when you kill an enemy with him, sometimes he'll say something clever).

Hm... Golden Sun series probably takes the cake. Needs console variant. No sequels because the finished the story line. Djinn are amazing, as are summons.

Final Fantasy is a good series. Unfortunately, I have never played any of the PS versions because I have never owned (and probably never will) a PS. Also, I have FF6, but the boss that possesses people has me stuck at a dead end, so I can't finish the story and kill Kefka. (In other words, any help on this?)

Of course, I can't believe no one has said Pokemon yet. It's probably just understood, but I expected that to be one of the first response.

Kill your own characters, use Life3 on them preferably. Err, excuse me, "Reraise" as 6A calls it. Phoenix esper. If not, just go with Life 2. Wrexsoul isn't that bad. Ignore his cronies as they regenerate and have a tendency to use Osmose.
