I was robbed at gunpoint, and I can safely say without a doubt that having a gun on my person would not have helped and almost certainly would have gotten me killed, had I tried anything

I actually have had someone break into my house, not at gunpoint, but still. It was the day after Christmas last year, at about 4am. As per usual, I was still awake and sitting with my laptop down in the living room. I had headphones in and the tv was playing pretty loud. First I heard the gate rattle, but assumed it was just a possum and didn't really take notice.

Then about 15 minutes later, out of the corner of my eye, I saw someone dressed completely in red step out into the kitchen. Again, I assumed it was just my mum wrapped in a blanket. It was a weird time for her to be up, but I just waved without really looking. They turned back and I thought nothing more of it.

Finally when I ventured up to my room, there was something off. It was slightly messier than usual: bags emptied on the floor, the tv antenna snapped. Once again I just assumed my sister had been looking for something and, oblivious as ever, I go to sleep.

The next morning I ask my mum and sister if they knew what was up with my room, but they had no idea. We started noticing things were missing and slowly began to piece it all together. My PS3, my laptop, my ipod, my phone, all my games, the family video camera... and my sister's track pants. As it turned out, we'd been robbed. Mostly my things too, since my bedroom was the only door that was open.

Anyway the forensics team arrived, took some fingerprints and here's the best part, they found a santa claus costume torn off out in our yard. No joke, we were robbed the day after christmas, by a guy dressed as santa...

Despite all that, I still agree that the less guns out there the better.

It always astounds me, that so many countries in the world are perfectly safe and have strict gun contol laws
and yet americans are always like "ibut I need to defend myself!"
that i is supposed to be an upside down exclamation mark because all americans are mexicans
more like mexican'ts amirite?

Nope. Biggest crime that's ever happened to me was last year when someone made off with the light-up Christmas tree in my front yard.

looks like you need to work on your quick draw
if this was the wild west you'd already be dead

If this were the wild west, I'd have probably killed myself because they'd be no way to get rid of my chronic migraines. In fact, they'd probably try to exorcise me or even outright kill me if I ever had a confusional migraine.

There's many reasons to be glad we're not in the wild west.

This is because if there are restrictive gun laws its harder for your average Joe Burglar to acquire one. People prefer to have some sort of weapon when they're committing a crime like that.

Anyway, back to being serious, I did get robbed by 3 men this year. 2 came through the gate, where my 2 dogs were waiting. 1 came in the house where my cat was. I slept soundly that night.

Jokes on him, the one he stole wouldn't even turn on. The best part was that I got insurance money for something that was completely worthless :P

I've never had my house broken into, but I have had it shot at due to a stupid teenage angst altercation my younger brother had with this other kid.

This topic is ignorant and the point the OP is trying to get across is very flawed.

Have you ever seen a terrorist set up explosives on an airplane you've been on? No? Well, I guess we should totally eradicate airport security!

Have you ever been violently raped in a mall? No? Well, why do we have security guards?????

etc.

the point is that news disproportionally represents the number of "bad things" that actually happen. fear sells. and some of us are sick to death of the media holding our amygdalae hostage

so what, only broadcast the nice things to divert attention from the messed up things that are actually happening?

things are getting worse re: guns in america!!

also hello nj it's me britain

A man in china ran down 23 students in his car yesterday.

We must ban assault vehicles and high capacity gastanks!

...and killed nobody. What would have happened if he had shot all those people?

Guns for Ubers! They make it far too easy for lunatics to kill people.

oh my fucking god STOP POSTING THIS OVERUSED TIRED BULLSHIT LOGICAL FALLACY

DM if you don't mind me asking, what happened? Were you robbed at home or outside?

It was my buddies' place, downtown Rochester. Three of us were just getting home from a night out, around 3am. Two guys were on the next-door porch, didn't think anything of them. They were basically waiting for someone to come home, and as we walked up the driveway from the parking area behind the house, one guy was waiting with the gun already pointed at us. He told us not to be a hero and empty our pockets. After we did, he told us to turn around and walk away, and then he took off. At no point in the encounter would a weapon have helped us in any way.

The only difference is that guns only intention is to kill. This comes with their ability to be used as for murder as well as self-defense. But truthfully I care more about my ability to defend my life than I care about my ability to travel in a vehicle. Both can be abused. There are far more deaths from car accidents (drunk or not) than gun murders, and there are far more guns.

Gun control has only brought a rise in violent crime in Australia and the UK, regardless how minor their gun crime is. Criminals will never turn their guns in. All mass murders in the last 50 years minus 1 have been in no gun zones. Clearly gun control is not the issue. Society would be best with everyone armed at all times.

btw: Once again quick draw fool. There were multiple of you. If you all had had a weapon what are the criminals odds? Another point is that if we were an armed society, criminals would think twice about robbing groups of people at night. Although self defense isn't for the faint hearted.

No, if someone has a weapon trained on you, regardless of what weaponry you have on you, the best course of action is to comply, or at least go along until you see an opportunity.

If you have a concealed carry you recognize the everyday threat of criminals and would never think nothing of being walked up to at 3am in your own driveway. Hand on your pistol in your pocket at the very least, just incase. I'm confident that in 1 second I could fire upon an average thug / crackhead on the street attempting to rob me. And I would to save my own life and even morose to protect my family. And no logical thinking person should give up this right.

Depends on the type of violent crime you're looking at. Homicide has gone down significantly since the Port Arthur massacre (which preceded the first real attempt at gun control in this country), from 1.9 per 100k in 1996 when it happened, to 1.3 in 2007. Robbery went down after peaking in 2001, kidnapping went down, sexual assault went up slightly (probably just due to increased reporting), assault has continued to go up and has this strange trend of being seasonal... but according to the charts it's shown this trend since before 1996, so who the hell knows.

I'd love to see where you got your statistics. Are you assuming that all assaults are with deadly weapons? Or do you just love talking out of your arse? I'm not actually in favour of gun control (or against it, for that matter), but please try and not lie through your teeth about this shit.

Incidentally Logan, have you ever practiced outdrawing/shooting criminals? How do you know you'd be faster, and how do you know that your gun happy nature won't just endanger your family because you opted to try and kill instead of just sitting there and taking it?

I'd just like to say if you can draw a gun and fire a bulletin so as to disable a guy with a gun trained on you in less than his reaction time (about a quarter of a second iirc), you should talk to the New York Yankees, I hear they'd pay $20 million a year for someone who can hit a 100 mph fastball.

More seriously though, all a concealed gun is gonna do is increase how many shots both people take, and more shots results in more deaths.
