Teambuilding Guide - Although it's rather outdated and explains things using OU mons (which may not be what you're looking for), this is a great read.
How to Battle and Win - While the Teambuilding Guide helps you build teams, this one helps you play games with them. It details when you should try to make risky plays.
And now, some advice from the best me:
  • If you really want to be good, then you have to understand the metagame first. There is no shortcut. Even though you said you wanted to build teams, using a sample team first might help you with that. Playing games with a good team helps you figure out what makes it so good, whether it's an unstoppable core or good offensive synergy.
  • Similarly, watching replays of tournament battles is very useful. Not only are they exciting, but they also feature high-level thinking to strive towards. Try to predict what the players will do next, and look at what objectives they want to reach.
  • However, the best way to get better is to practice. If you have a friend into Pokémon, you can play them, or just play on the ladder. Join a tournament! You'll become a better player the more games you play against different teams.
  • Once you feel like you understand the metagame to some degree (not like you have to be some kind of master ofc), go ahead and build your own team! Try to incorporate elements from the sample teams, or just try something different if you want. After you play around with it, you can put it on Rate My Team (here is a way to format an RMT if that helps) and make the team better.
  • Take it a step at a time! Don't try to do everything all at once.
  • Why do I give advice to other people, then think to myself that this is what I should be doing, then not do it? ._. (By the way, please let me know if it's bad or it doesn't work.)
Thanks so much for the help! I'll be sure to check this stuff out. Man do I wish this stuff was in the "Adventure Rule Book" at the beginning of every entry in the series..

Ok so I have recently started to play Emerald and Fire Red and I want to know what a good team set up would be for the in game story because I am really bad at selecting a team because I get to the elite 4 and only have like 4 Pokemon I would love some good teams that also include your starter from the beginning of the game.

Also I am probably gonna get recked for this but what is with this whole EV traning thing I dont know what that does and if its a good thing how do I do it. I have usually been a casual player since fire red and I want to get into the harder stuff.

EV training is more important for competitive pokemon than in game. EV training is a process by which you have a pokemon face specific foes to maximize a specific stat (i.e. Zubat for speed). By giving a pokemon 252 EV values, you can add 63 points to a stat. However, you cannot do this for every stat as there is a cap of 510 total EVs for a pokemon to obtain.

Is there somewhere that lists the best uses for the exclusive gen 3/4 tutors? Mainly looking for gen 3, I know some things like seismic toss kang, swords dance qwilfish, double edge glalie but it would be nice if there was a comprehensive list somewhere.

Thanks for the info I appreciate it.

I caught Wingulls with a few different natures in Apricorn Balls in HG, in order to teach them Defog and eventually transfer them up into SM. If I also give them Whirlpool in HGSS, it will be impossible to transfer them into Gen V because they'll have what's considered an HM move in whichever Gen IV game I use to transfer them, right? I imagine there isn't one, but does anyone know of a way around that? (Obviously Whirlpool isn't at all important anyway, so leaving it off is fine.)

There's no way around that, no. You have to have either Whirlpool in DPPt or Defog in HGSS; no way to have both.

does anyone know what is statistically the ideal way to encounter, for the first time, the legendary beasts in GSC? There are a few options: move back and forth between adjacent routes and check the grass in each; move back and forth between an adjacent town and route and check the grass; fly to a town, move to an adjacent route and check the grass. And with all of these options is also the question of "once one of these is statistically determined to be the best option, which place on the map is ideal?" My current strategy is to fly to Ecruteak and go to the route south of Ecruteak (as it has several adjacent routes), search the grass (with Repel), fly back to Ecruteak, rinse, repeat. However, I haven't yet had any luck with this.

It is entirely random where they appear, (aside from Route 40 and 41, which are the water routes and have no grass tiles) and each has merits. None are really ideal, and the best way was to borrow a trio from a friend to get their entries so you could track down your own. However, perhaps instead of flying back, you can just walk between two routes. Other than that... just keep trying. They'll show themselves eventually.

In Crystal version, you've got to go to specific locations to chase Suicune, with its sprite dashing away as you get close. Once you've encountered it through all of these locations, it'll return to its first location, (it cycles through these locations until caught) but will be battled in the Tin Tower's ground floor. It thankfully will not know Roar and won't run from battle, but Raikou and Entei are unchanged aside from their battle theme.

I'm playing Gold so I have the unfortunate burden of needing to find all 3. actually I already have Entei and Suicune sighted in the dex (from a grinding session earlier in the game) but I just need to find Raikou and it doesn't seem to want to show itself lmao

"Hopefully these tips will help you out if you are struggling to catch Entei, Raikou and Suicune. After you drop down Burned Tower and make them run off, they will randomly run around Johto until you catch them. There are certain points you need to remember and know:

- All three will remain lvl 40 in the wild throughout the game.
- All three will attempt to run on their first battle turn.
- All three move around incredibly fast and do not stay in the same location long
- All three potentially know the move 'Roar' but this is not a guarantee.
- All three only appear in tall grass in Johto
- All three will change location when you Fly
- All three will NOT regenerate any HP during the game regardless of number of battles however their status will change back to normal.

Whilst travelling around Johto you will hopefully run into these three at least once whilst you are training up in the patches of grass. These will mean they are entered onto your Pokedex - this will be an incredibly useful tool when it comes to catching them.

In 6 years of having the game, I have seen these two Pokemon loads. I mostly see them around these areas:

Entei - Frequently hangs around Route 34 (Goldenrod), Route 29 (New Bark Town) and Route 38 (Olivine City)

Raikou - Tends to hang around Route 34 (Goldenrod), Route 30/31 (CherryGrove City) and Route 29 (New Bark Town)

The third, Suicune, is a different matter however. Only until a few weeks ago did I decide it was time to see and catch this son of a ***** once and for all. After hanging around the areas the other two are usually found there was no luck. So, I headed to the north part of the map due to it's connection with the north wind. Finally, I saw it and was able to track it's movement on the Pokedex. It does head south on occasions, but it was rare.

Suicune - Usually hangs around the North part of Johto, especially Route 36 (Ecruteak City), Route 42 (Mahogany Town), Route 43 (Lake of Rage) and Route 45 (Blackthorn City)

Hopefully now you will have all three sighted on your Pokedex. Now it's time to catch them. I treated the three dogs as if there were in two teams, Entei and Raikou (Team 1), and Suicune (Team 2) on it's own. You will have probably read that Repel's help with finding these dogs, but I strongly disagree. This method I used had me with all 3 dogs in under a week. Firstly, you need to train two pokemon;

Scyther/Scizor
- Train this pokemon up to level 44 or higher with False Swipe. This will prove important later on. Level it up by taking it through the Elite Four several times. It can be caught in the Bug Catching Contest.

Jynx
- Catch a Jynx in Ice Path. Level it up to level 50 and have it know the following moves; Lovely Kiss and Mean Look. Lovely kiss has an exceptional accuracy rate and is heavily important in these encounters (a missed sleep move could result in the legendaries running away). Again, to level it up, take it through the Elite Four. It will annihilate most of their pokemon on it's own if you teach it Psychic and Ice Punch. It is important it is level 50 so it's speed is quicker than the dogs.

Once you have these two, it's time to catch your beasts.

Team 1 - Entei and Raikou
- Have a pokemon that knows fly.
- Fly to New Bark Town, and Check your Pokedex to see where Entei and Raikou are
- If one of them appears on Route 29 or Route 46 get on your bike and head to the nearest grass in that area.
- If one does not appear near there, simply fly to New Bark Town again and check again. Rinse and Repeat till one appears close.
- Have Jynx first in your party.
- Ride around on your bike in the nearest patch of grass for a while. Run away from weak Pokemon.
- Do NOT use repel as stated in other tip methods and manual. A legendary's sighting is based on battle percentage (e.g. 1 in 20 chance of appearing). If you use a repel, you lower the chances of a battle itself, so the chance of seeing a legendary is lower. Plus, if you are using this method completely as stated, your Jynx will be lvl 50 or above, meaning even less battles. Keep your repels at home is my advice.
- Keep checking your Pokedex to make sure it is in the area
- After around 1-10 fights, your legendary should appear. Firstly, use Mean Look, this will stop it from running. Should your legendary know Roar, you will have to change your strategy. Rather than using Mean Look first, use Lovely Kiss. It is possible it will fail and your legendary will run, but it is a risk worth taking as this method had me with 4 sightings in 30 minutes.
- Once Mean Looked and Asleep, bring out Scyther. Use False Swipe to take it's HP down to 1. Should the legendary awake, it may run - depending on whether Mean Look wears out. But don't worry, it won't regen HP. Simply use the method again, and put it to sleep with 1 HP left.
- Once Low on HP and Asleep throw Ultra Balls. It will take 7-12 depending on luck.

This works for both Raikou and Entei. I managed to catch both in roughly 8 hours of trying after I had spotted them. Suicune is different - this will take a little longer.

Team 2 - Suicune
As i say, Suicune is a different kettle of fish. Because of it's relevance to the 'North Wind' I have seen distinct pathing differences from the other two. Everytime I changed route or went into a building, Suicune changed route - usually heading to the next route North. So this is what you do;
- Buy tons and tons of Ultra/Great b@lls and bring lots of Fast B@lls
- Fly to Blackthorn City
- Check your Pokedex, see if Suicune is on Route 46. (This is the Southern part of Route 45, and is off Route 29 which is near New Bark Town).
- If it isn't rince and repeat until it is.
- If it is, cycle down onto route 45, this will mean Suicune will now be on route 45. Check your pokedex for clarification. If not, start over.
- Cycle on route 45, sticking to the grass as much as possible and run from weak pokemon.
- Like the other two, do NOT use repel.
- When you see him, Mean Look and Lovely Kiss. It is more than likely your Suicune will know Roar, so you may have to alternate your strategy to make sure he is always asleep. The encounter will be a little rarer than the other two dogs, so keep checking your pokedex.
- Suicune's pathing is a lot rarer than the other two, as there is only a certain way you are bound to meet on the same route by using Fly. It may take a while until you catch this guy. The important thing is to get it to 1 HP as fast as possible, even if it means placing Scyther in your first party place for a while.
- Use Ultra B@lls and Fast B@lls when Suicune is on 1 hp and asleep. I highly recommend to stock up on Fast B@lls, as Suicune is still very difficult to catch.

And there you go. I hope this information helped. From my experience, Raikou and Entei are far easier to catch than Suicune. Suicune requires patience and a lot of b@lls but is worth it in the end. It took me 6 hours from seeing Suicune to catching it.

Good luck! I hope this information has helped."

As it turns out I did run into Raikou after all and have now caught all three. Regardless, thanks for that - I'll be sure to take a look if I ever decide to torture myself by catching them again.

I need some advice on my White 2 ingame team.

While it is an ingame team, I'd also like to use it against friends(we all have Gen 5), as well as in the PWT and Battle Subway. And maybe the Battle Institute.

So far I have:

- N's Scraggy(has 30IVs in all stats and the traded EXP boost)
- Defiant Braviary(the one on Route 4)

Pokemon I need advice on:

- Ferrothorn, Lilligant, or Sawsbuck

I really want to use Ferrothorn(even though I dislike its design), because it has a really good stat distrubution and good moves(even without Spikes). If I do use one, it will be evolved from N's Ferroseed, so it'll have 30IVs in all stats and the traded EXP boost.

I'm considering Lilligant due to Quiver Dance into Petal Dance + Own Tempo. That's really all I can say.

I'm also considering Sawsbuck because I love its design, and if I do use one, it'll be evolved from the Serene Grace Deerling you get on Route 6 from the scientist.

- Eviolite Electabuzz, Ampharos, or Jolteon

While I could use an Electivire(I can trade with a friend and back), I have used one in a playthrough before, so I'm considering an Eviolite Electabuzz.

I already have an underleveled Ampharos, but I don't really like it much(which is why it's underleveled).

Jolteon is another option, because it's really cool, has a great stat distrubution and...yeah

- Haxorus...or something else

Tell me if there's anything else I could use aside from Haxorus...I just feel like it's 'too good'. It'll certainly be good for Single Battles against friends, PWT, and Battle Subway with Dragon Dance Right. For now I have an Axew with Dragon Dance and it's pretty good.

- Moxie Gyarados, Azumarill, Vaporeon, or other water type

I really want to use a special water user due to Surf, but I'm not liking Vaporeon much. Moxie Gyarados is insanely fun(and it'll be better once I get Dragon Dance), but once again, Surf feels useless on it. Same with Huge Power Azumarill. I'd prefer Moxie Gyarados over Huge Power Azumarill, as it doesn't need/rely on its ability, and even with the Huge Power attack boost, Gyarados still has better stats. Maybe I could teach Haxorus Surf, and keep Gyarados? I know Surf on Haxorus isn't great...but it's something...

TL;DR
Jolteon or Eviolite Electabuzz(or Ampharos)?
What water type should I use?
OP Ferrothorn, Lilligant or Serene Grace Sawsbuck?

^Honestly, there's a lot of bottom-of-the-barrel stuff there. If you're even considering to use Delibird, Magcargo, Corsola or Ledian, you better be prepared for single-digit streaks. The selection of Pokémon from Johto isn't particularly riddled with great Pokémon, although this improved drastically after they got evolutions in Gen IV.

Perhaps some shenanigans could be had with Smeargle, Blissey and Ursaring. It wouldn't get you much farther than the first bulky Fighting type, but at least you avoid using any trashmons.

Arceus can finally be caught on Hall of Origin using the Tweaking glitch. My question is simple: can such an Arceus be sent through PokeBank to XY/SM? Don't care about VGC and whatnot.

I have Japanese versions of Platinum/HG/BW and I was wondering if there was a quick and easy way in any of these games to get 3/4/5/6 perfect IV Dittos?

I want some good JPN Dittos for Masuda Method in S/M but I would like to catch them myself in these past games as I like to catch my Pokemon myself.

RNG manipulation is your friend. There are guides to doing it on this site.
Are all the Hoopa portal legendaries guaranteed 3 perfect IVs in ORAS?
Yes. Every legendary Pokemon in OR/AS is guaranteed 3 perfect IV's.

When RBY came out on VC, I bought Yellow. It was technically my first game and holds lots of nostalgia for me. Now I'm seeing all of these tutorials on getting good transfers and everything seems to involve the MissingNo glitch in some capacity. Apparently this glitch is dangerous to get with Yellow? And you don't use the old man?

Should I just bite the bullet and buy Red or Blue?
