How did you find Smogon?

How I first started playing Pokemon:

When I was really young I got a Gameboy with Pokemon Red and couldn't get past the coffee man, so I gave up. Then later I went to my friends house and played Blue and liked it. Then I bought Red again and was hooked.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

From the first gen to the second gen I was a total newb who used low accuracy moves and Hyper Beam. Then in the third gen I discovered Serebii then looked into IVs and EVs then I became much better, and I found out about Smogon from GameFAQs.

How I first started playing Pokemon:

Strangly enough, my first pokemon game was Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, at the request of my neighbor. I enjoyed it, and I soon bought Emerald, and later LeafGreen.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

I lurked on GameFAQs for about a year, where I picked up most of the mechanics involved in breeding and EV training, but it never really caught on. When I bought Pearl, I started taking it all much more seriously, and I was lead to Smogon by a few of the more knowledgeable users.

Yeah, hey, I'm new.

I'm colinopolis on shoddy, so some of you might have seen me around ;o
(pm me! xoxoxo)

How I first started playing pokemon:

I kind of remember. Back in the day, in like 5th and 6th grade, pokemon cards became THE BIG THING. Of course I followed along. I made a fucking NASTY psychic/electric theme deck, using haunter (which had a card in the fossil set that like made the other poke do nothing half the time) and magneton (still one of my favorites but now I hate due to the FUCKING UGLY magnezone).

Well everyone moved on and thought it was stupid but I kept getting the games and stopped playing the cards. Soon some of my favorite pokemon were Jolteon (still my favorite today), porygon, haunter, magneton, ampharos, dugtrio, mudkippppp, and a few more (before it became a stupid trend >:U).

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

I battled back in the Toys'R'Us days, that's how I got my mew on yellow version :O.

I have never actually battled in D/P online other than Shoddy, because I never got myself AR (which I still dislike but understand now) and also my DS was stolen along with my Porygon-Z, Swampert, and Marowak :'(

I found out about smogon through serebii, and while I still use serebii for information on individual pokes, I like smogon a WHOLE lot more now.

yeah, fucking boring but nice to meet you :)

How i started playing pokemon

I found out about pokemon in study hall at school, the guy next to me was playing red and he tole me about it. It seemed interesting so i managed to get a copy of blue and a GB. I played it forever and beat it gathering quite a collection of pokes. I still remember my first poke, Blastoise.

how i started playing online

I discovered netbattle after just randomly searching for "online pokemon" not expecting to find anything i came in shortly after gsc came out. And played every now and then. I have never been the best battler i dont think im anything but average on skill, if that. But i can have fun even if i lose as long as the game is exciting.

How I first started playing Pokemon:

My dad bought me a GBC and a Gold version. Pokemon wasn't too popular then and I didn't really battle anyone, but playing it was fun.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

I was on Serebii looking at the RMT section and I kept reading things about Smogon so I decided to check it out, and now I rarely go on the Serebii forums (though I do go on the dex pages and stuff).

Um, yeah, new here peoples!

How I first started playing Pokemon:
Red version when it came out, which is like, 10 years or so ago?
Kept playin' though the colors till Crystal then stopped for a long while.
Got back into it though Smash Bros because Pichu reminded me of how fun the Pokemon series was. Yay Pichu!

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

Same way as the person above me said. =P

I got here from the bulbagarden; a link redirected me to smogon.

I am Pikachu25 on Bulbapedia, Pika25 on BMGf, and Pika250 on Youtube.

How I first started playing Pokemon:
Been playing since R/B came out, never stopped (it's been what, 11+ years now?). Also played the TCG to pass the time.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:
I hated not being able to battle anyone on the video games and only in the TCG. Eventually stumbled across Netbattle thanks to a friend, and one thing led to another I guess.

How I first started playing pokemon:

I've played video games all the way back to Burger Time on the C64, I've been interested in roleplaying games since discovering them. I spent most of college and some time afterwards playing various MMO's, ending in a pretty long string of beta tests. After that I moved on to playing Magic and became very competitive with it, often driving 4-5 hours with my team on weekends for tournaments (wife did not like that, no siree).

I moved back to console based gaming as a means to free up some time (MMOs) and money (Mtg), and recently found out about all the online functions of Pokemon D/P. I was very intrigued by them and the more I read, the more I liked. So D/P is my first Pokemon game, and I'm not even through the story mode yet, and I'm looking forward to learning how to be a successful battler.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

Honestly, I haven't had a online battle yet, but I'm very eager to learn the ins and outs and grind my way to success. I found Smogon while searching the web for good message boards to read on Pokemon.

I very much look forward to meeting and talking with you all.

I heard Smogon referenced multiple times at Serebii.net as a center for competitive battling, and it piqued my interest. I haven't played Pokemon very competitively since Red/Blue, but it's cool to see it's still alive and well in Diamond/Pearl.

I saw a topic on another forum making fun of a topic on Serebii.net about pokemon furries(one of them said he's attracted to lucario because of it's personality, what the fuck). I was skimming the topic and saw a bunch of people from "Smogon" flaming the furries, so I google smogon.

How I first started playing pokemon:

Pokemon came like it did to almost everyone my age at the time. The series started showing and I watched it avidly every morning (to the extent of regularly being slightly late for school). When I heard there was going to be a game I jumped at the opportunity. My grandparents bought me Red version for christmas, but I couldn't wait, so ended up playing to Koga before I actually 'recieved' it on christmas day. IIRC though, that boxing day we were evacuated from our block of flats because someone petrol bombed the far end. Some kind of karma, heh. Anyways, since then i've owned every pokemon game, apart from that N64 thing with the microphone that you could talk to pikachu through... I even have a strange pikachu volleyball game on my pc somewhere. It's turned into quite the unhealthy obsession.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

Despite owning all the games, i've never had anyone to play with. Even now they're online compatible, my house refuses to allow me to set up a wireless network. There have been a lot of tears shed... I found smogon via strawhats GameFAQ guide and even though this is the first pokemon forum i've visited, it's got enough class to feel that if I went anywhere else, I wouldn't be gaining anything.

Well, this is my first post here, so I may as well make it a good one...

I'm Devastation, or Dev for short. I'm a member of other forums, but for now, you can all just know me as Devastation. ;)

How I first started playing pokemon:

Well, at the age of two, I was given a Gameboy, one of those giant grey bricks that I used to play Tetris on. As a result, I became a 'Child of Nintendo' and would buy the top games that my older sisters would suggest I buy. When Pokemon Red and Blue came out, I got Pokemon Blue and started with a Squirtle, whereby I played right up until Misty's Gym before my older sister erased my game. I restarted with a Charmander and, in all these years, haven't reset my blue game and still have my Lv. 100 Charizard with a moveset of Fire Spin, Fire Blast, Seismic Toss and some other pretty damn rubbish attack. (Fissure, I think.)

I completed both games like a noob, no thought to "wait a second, Dragon doesn't seem to have a move that doesn't inflict a set amount of damage," or "why the hell did they give Gengar that massive weakness to Psychic when really it's the only thing that can kick the hell out of Alakazam?!"

Then I got Pokemon Gold and Silver and treated it in much the same way. Power > Accuracy + Reliability was my motto, though minus the mathmatical allusions, and I completed that game, before getting my Pokemon handed to me by Red of Mt. Silver.

I first started thinking competitively when Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire came out. I appreciated the internet more at the age that I was when it came out, and used well known sites for updates on what sort of new Pokemon were going to feature, and I soon joined Psypoke, the forums.

On there, I realised what I had been doing wrong all these years, and learnt finally that Thunderbolt was better than Zap CAnnon any day.

It was from Psypoke that I learnt about Smogon.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

When taking part in heated discussions on "who was better, Pokemon X or Pokemon Y," arguments were decided by "well, Smogon says this one is better," and then the other person would back down.

Netbattle is still something that I haven't got my head round, and still haven't bothered downloading it. I even sent a message to someone who I thought was the creator of it (I think it was someone who just had a server for Netbattle) telling them that it was a cheats playground becuase there was no fun in training a Pokemon, enjoying raising Pokemon, hatching their babies and all that.

While on the forums at Psypoke, I learnt what competitive battling was. I learnt all the terms, Physical Sweeper, PP Drainer, Toxi Trapper, the lot, and I was feeling pretty confident. When I found out that the next batch of games was going to be internet-compatible, I started training like mad, feeling confident that armed with my weapons of knowledge, I would become a renowned trainer on the internet.

However, complications arose with Psypoke and I left, and joined a new place, just as Diamond and Pearl were released. The people of PKMN.NET were more serious about IV training than Psypoke ever were, and when I Pal-parked my Pokemon to my cartridge and went onto the great battlefield of the internet, I realised that I wasn't going to be the great trainer I thought I was.

That was actually a month ago. For the past month and however many weeks, I have been training Pokemon that just don't seem to cut it. I hold a belief that straying from the norm is the key to victory, as people find it harder to anticipate your attacks. My Choice Specs Tyranitar, for example. When I battled someone with it for the first time, they were shocked I didn't sweep them away with Dragon Dance, but rather Thunderbolted the hell out of his unwary Gyarados. Next time I battled him, however, I realised what my mistake was; I was going to be fighting people more than once and this time he was prepared with a very pink, very high-HPed Blissey that managed to wall all of my efforts, and I didn't have an EQ to kill it with.

And this is why I am here. I have recalled the wonderous mentions of Smogon from Psypoke and the mutterings of an elitist site from PKMN.NET and have been driven here for training.

I hope, here, someone will take me under their wing, and I will be able to live up to my username of devastating an opponent's team with Netbattle techniques, but exemplified and excersised against an opponent's Diamond and Pearl Pokemon.

God, I really did go to town with this post, didn't I? I'd love to have people PM me to talk to me about my moveset problems and personal favourite movesets, so I'll shut up now. ;)

Thanks for reading this. ;)

This is my first post on smogon although I have been "lurking" around the threads for quite some time. My username is Jaroku. This is a name that I completely made up a long time ago. I always thought i was coool so it has been my name for various agmes that I have played (I use my real name in all the pokemon games though).

How I first started playing pokemon:
Well it all began quite a while ago. I was between 6 to 7 years old I would say. I had always been a huge fan of all things pokemon. Especially the T.V. show I think I saw every episode of that first season. Anyways once the pokemon games came to America I was so excited and proceeded to ask for pokemon blue for my birthday. I loved the pokemon games and even used to play the trading card game. After I beat pokemon fire red I quit pokemon for over a year. Once pokemon pearl came out I couldnt resist and was immediatly hooked back on pokemon.

How I found out about Smogon:
Well first of all I would like to say that I am completely new to the competitive pokemon scene. When I was younger I would just play through the games and battle my friends. Now that I am older I have learned a lot about how pokemon works and really want to start battling competitively. The only problem being that I need to develop a team but that is a subject for another post. I found smogon one day when I was looking through various pokemon sites on the internet and found something about tiers. Ever since then I have been checking out the threads here and really just think it is a great community.

Oooh! Fun!~

How I started playing Pokemon:

I first got into Pokemon when my brother and I were fighting over what to watch at 4 o clock when we got back from school (I was in 1st or 2nd grade) . He wanted to watch this new show called Pokemon that just started airing and I wanted to watch the 700 Club and Sailormoon. We played rock paper scissors and stuff and he won most of the time, so I just had to get used to it. I thought it was pretty cool and cute, and since everyone was into it at school I decided to give it a try and guess what... i was hooked! yay me! <3 I remember my 9th birthday party when we went out to watch Pokemon the First Movie since everyone wanted to watch it. XD Sooo corny.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

You guys might think this is pretty funny but I was searching for something about pollution for my science project and came to this website. And I'm here now so you guys must be so thankful!

How i started playing pokemon

I saw the show and I was like, COOL! So I got the game.

how i started playing online

I was forced to.

Through a friend.

How I started playing Pokemon:

When I finished the 4th year of school, my uncle bought me a Game Boy Color and there were Poke Blue, Red, Yellow, Gold and Crystal, also there were some other games like Mortal Kombat but I used to play Pokemon most and that way I started loving Pokes.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

Searching for good Poke movesets on Google after I bought the Computer, I saw a link to Smogon.com and went in there, then actually found out that the movesets from there worked best, and now I still come around here :)

How I started playing pokemon -
My brothers bought pokemon red and blue for themselves when they were in years 7 and 8 and they ended up giving it to me about a week later. I was only in year 5, so i knew barely anything about the game/show.

How I started battling online:
I got sick of beating my friends with only one pokemon.

How I found out about Smogon:
I saw it mentioned various times in Serebii forums, so i ended up 'googling' it.

How I first started playing:

In an attempt to be cool in second grade, I bugged my parents to get me a Blue version/Game Boy color, and I've been playing the game ever since. And I've been pretty addicted to it throughout--I remember when I first played it, I couldn't even get out of the first room ~_~ But when Pokemon "died out" in school, I was one of the only ones that didn't stop and I also eventually progressed to Silver/Crystal when Crystal came out, and eventually saving up enough money to get Ruby. Emerald as well, then finally I got a DS and Diamond version, which I am currently playing at the time of this post.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

I started battling online around 2004, and I was really horrible at it. Well, actually not entirely--I knew of how to implement EVs and the like, but I always abused ubers since I was, well, 11. Eventually my monitor decided to be a bitch and harakiri, so I was left without a good computer for a year--then I got back to competitive battling, and with even greater knowledge of Ubers being shunned upon and battling, but I still wasn't good. My entire teams were offensively orientated because I didn't have the patience to use a Tank.

Dan Dan and I go to the same Pokemon board and he told me about Smogon from there since I needed a bit of help. Mind you, Smogon was a bit of a help, but it was only a bit since I wanted to make movesets myself and figure them out myself so I didn't get too dependent on other sites, and since then I only really checked here occasionally for random Pokemon I'm interested in seeing an analysis on, and a bit more insight towards the metagame, but I digress. And that's how I found out about Smogon.

Who's this?

T'is me, Mr Escalator. Although this looks kinda boring, I may as well establish myself here first off.

How I first started playing:

A lot of you guys have the same beginnings as I have; This may sound quite familiar. Back in the day, there was a game that brought everyone in school together, regardless of your social status. This was quite a feat that has been seldom happened since. You all know and love this game. Pong.

But then there was a sequel to this epic and they decided to name it Pokemon. It wasn't as hard hitting as the original and was based loosely off of it.

Ah well.

Pokemon was the cool thing to do, so I hopped on the bandwagon and got my trusty sandshrew to crush my opponents. I managed to collect all 151 Pokemon, through legit means :D

The Mew was Thunderpup's, as we know each other in real life.

Rambling? Sorry.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

Serebii was my portal to here. I used it to help me out in Sapphire, and I eventually snuck into the forums. Blah blah blah, D/P came out and I noticed a link to Smogon in one of the posts regarding the new pokes. I started lurking here and liked what I saw.

I actually didn't do PvP until I noticed people on here talk about a new craze called Shoddy Battle. Intrigued, I took the time to make a team. I'm still on regularly. The name... Mr Escalator. You may of seen my half-assed attempts at battling :D

Eh, I'll try and stop my nonsensical talk of my origins :P

Seeya around

Hi, all. Just joined the site, looks like this is a good place to introduce myself.

How I first started playing:

Well, back in the third grade I went and bought a lime-green GBC. My first game for it, and consequently my first videogame ever, was Pokemon Blue Version. I popped in the cart, and got hooked from square one. A great game, I thoroughly enjoyed it from the first battle with my rival to the E4. Of course, being about nine years old at the time, I was a long way from having any sort of clue about competitive battling. However, I played through the game repeatedly, and permanently fixed a nostalgia for Pokemon into my system.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

I purchased and beat each generation of Pokemon after originating with Blue. While I enjoyed all of them, I still played casually; I would beat the E4, catch the legendaries, and fill the pokedex for a bit before getting bored and moving on.

Well, in the prelude to Diamond/Pearl's release, I was actively involved in competitive Metroid Prime: Hunters, which was fun, but quite flawed. We all eventually got bored; a few of my fellow MPHers had played competitive Pokemon before, and were planning to move on to D/P as their next online game.

Well, I let myself be persuaded and delved into the 4th generation of Pokemon as a complete and total noob. Through my own learnings and the patience of my friends, I figured out the basics that make competitive battling work. So I set out to make my team, which turned out decent enough for me to gain some good experience with.

However, I wanted it to be better, so I inquired about Pokemon sites, and was eventually directed to Smogon. I lurked around as a guest for a while, reading through the various analyses and other competitive aspects. The info here is great, and eventually I joined up. So here I am.
