In-Game Music

Black and White has some seriously good music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8s6IkFafrK4 (Final N Theme)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnJwd9zrjiA (Elite 4 Theme)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZR1KJYEvnGw (Legendary Theme)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJCn3LxRo3w (Event Legendary Theme)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-B2cnSqPy8 (Kanto Champion Theme, which is sadly unused)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4u6ht7TtVo (Tower of Heaven)

As for a game like, say, Team Fortress 2, go look at my channel.

oh man fuck I totally forgot about mother 3
man it has such a huge soundtrack, but most of it is just similar riffs done to suit different moods. Especially the pigmask theme. It works really well and fuck I love like 3/4 of the 100+ songs in it

Tetris Attack / Panel de Pon - This game and DKC2 have my favourite overall soundtracks, hands down. The whole soundtrack is just filled with relaxing songs you can really chill out to. A lot of the songs have really funky basslines too. My favourite is the Forest Stage theme.
Forest Stage
Flower Stage
Water Stage
Sea Stage
Blaze Stage
Moon Stage

F-Zero GX - Unlike DKC2 and Tetris Attack, F-Zero GX's soundtrack is a lot more upbeat and pump up-ish. Infinite Blue and the Staff Roll are my favourite tracks here
Infinite Blue
DIGI-BOY
Samurai Goroh
Dr. Stewart
Staff Roll (the drums kick in around a minute into the song, thats my favourite part)

Neopets (yeah, i just went there) - Not known for their game music but I found one particular track on there that I really enjoy:
Time Tunnel

It was already posted on the last page but... Champion's Theme from G/S/C... My God. Me and my brother had a copy of Crystal, and our parents had never liked us playing it with the volume on cause they thought it was tinny and annoying, so we got into the habit of playing it sans volume. But when we reached Red, we decided to just put the volume on, add to the climactic effect of this ultimate final boss we didn't even know existed. And it blew our minds. It was just such a brilliant theme for THE ultimate boss. Even from the first couple of notes, the little stacatto Eb, you can tell that "this is it". Then out comes the Pikachu at level EIGHTY-FREAKING ONE! And shit gets crazy.

I fucking love that theme.

Also honourable mention to every single part of the soundtrack from Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Not one mention of the Super Mario Galaxy games? Those games have some of the most epic tracks I've ever listened to in a game. Buoy Base Galaxy, Good Egg Galaxy, Gusty Garden Galaxy, Melty Monster Galaxy, I could go on and on...

I am super nerdy about video game(and movie) soundtracks. This bothered me when I was younger but I am a very comfortable adult. Just gonna type shit for now I'll probably add in a few particular tracks' hyperlinks later but to draw attention to a few games...

Some video games that I think for the most part have incredible soundtracks almost the entire way through in no particular order: Heavy Rain, Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy Series, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Metal Gear Series, Baten Kaitos, Tales of... Series, Breath of Fire 4, Kingdom Hearts series.

I think Pokemon has had surprisingly good music through the years. I like the anime OST a lot since it's largely higher quality versions of what you find in-game, but there's a lot of actual in-game tracks I love too. I rock out to the Stadium soundtrack once in a while. Definitely agree that BW's soundtrack is solid, really enjoyed N's battle theme and the Plasma Grunt theme in particular when I was playing through, as well as the song that players when Gym Leaders are down to one Pokemon. Partial to Miror B's songs, especially the battle song in XD. Liked the Cipher Admin theme a lot too. I'm pretty partial to battle tracks in general, I guess...

I have found that as time goes on more and more games are using songs with lyrics, and in many cases, songs that already existed in games like RPGs where you'd normally expect original(orchestrated) music. I think this has been hit or miss, but a few I thought worked out really nicely: M4 Part 2 in Mass Effect, Snake Eater in MGS3, Compass in Red Dead Redemption.

Three on Three (Pokemon the First Movie)

Fury Sparks (Tales of Vesperia)

End Theme on piano (Silver)

Lightning's Theme/Battle Theme on violin (FFXIII)

Shitload of awesome songs already posted in this thread too. Basically Brawl sums up about every truly awesome song from the nintendo franchises, and DKC had some of the greatest music of all time. The Tales series usually has a great soundtrack too. And Zelda's is always good, though I personally like the remixes of OoT's music.

Personally, I didn't rate Super Mario Galaxy's music that much except for the remixed airship theme.

also brinstar red soil from super metroid and its remix in whatever metroid prime game it was are perfect both musically and in terms of atmosphere, they capture the terror and intrigue of an alien world perfectly
oh. spooky memories
super metroid was an astounding game in that respect (and many others, of course), perhaps the most engrossing atmosphere of any game environment i've experienced. it's not just the music, there's the setting itself and especially the lack of dialogue and direction. lost in the bowels of an alien planet, millions of miles from the nearest human life, guided only by your wits - it creates a powerful and thrilling sense of isolation. a great game for playing alone at night in one long go

(yeah i like super metroid)

okay so anyway. here are some tunes from ys 3, a sort of obscure but surprisingly long-lived series of action-rpgs (except 3 which is more metroidvania in style). i was surprised when i replayed it recently by number of quality tunes (mostly dungeon themes), many of the better tracks are energetic and forward in kind of a mega man way?

ballacetine castle
outside of area
lava pit
shop (aka the house of jams)

though i had mixed feelings about final fantasy 10's soundtrack, the ffx piano collections are absolutely beautiful, in my opinion some of the finest work associated with the series. if you were disappointed with ffx's in-game score -- or even if you liked it! -- you should find yourself pleasantly surprised with these!

besaid
assault
guadosalam

and here are some assorted favorites from the old gb final fantasy spin-offs. 8-bit music at its finest!

in search of the holy sword - 2nd overworld theme from final fantasy adventure
critical hit!! - battle theme from final fantasy legend ii (unfortunately a little quiet)
theme of another dimension - time-traveling, laser-shooting airship theme from final fantasy legend iii (the song is as cool as the vessel itself)

and a couple other songs that are just pretty!

underground - underground level them from super mario world 2: yoshi's island
new waters (call at a port) - port theme from terranigma
within the gloomy darkness - mine level from final fantasy: crystal chronicles

now to go through all the previous posts and listen to all the unfamiliar tubes 'cause i feel like a froob for posting my own faves and ignoring everybody else's aaaa a a a a a

Probably boss battles from original Ranger, I lost that game and don't remember the music.

There are probably others that I missed.

Music from other games I've played:

All boss battles in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.
Dark Bowser battle in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.
Slival tank battles in Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime.

And of course:

Every boss battle in every game ever to exist.
