Japanese games suck ?

He's saying on his twitter feed that he apologized... when it's obvious on that very same feed that he wasn't remotely sorry for saying it a second time at least and in fact tried to score a few more points making even more jokes about the whole thing immediately after.

That is until it was him being publicly ridiculed, now suddenly he has remorse and has expressed it multiple times. It's just not fair of us to say anything without the full context surrounding the thing he chose to repeat on twitter. He keeps making snide jokes and blaming other people for being so mean instead of, you know, actually sounding like he regrets being a dick to someone.

What's funny is when I saw him cry accepting his award last night I thought he seemed genuinely moved and expected him to be a little humbled and sincere on twitter after. Instead he invited everyone to suck his dick. Boy did I misjudge that one.

Quote from gaf, I honestly couldn't have put it better myself.

Here were his previous tweets for reference's sake.

How is that backpedaling? He said something rudely, and it was taken out of context. Then he basically said "okay, true, that was too rude. I apologize for that. By the way, it was taken out of context. The actual point I was trying to make is still true, though."

That is like, clarification.

That is backpedaling to the 13th degree... I don't know what else to say to you. Btw his apology was insincere-hamfisted bullshit. "Yeah you and your countries games suck, and I made sure to state that again on twitter but i'm sorry." In the immortals words of Midori, "Sorry isn't going to cut it!"

This game we're playing is pointless. I don't see a point to arguing over "definitions. Bottom line / Big picture / whatever is that the dude is a grade A hipster douchebag who thinks he can say or act without respect for others.

That kind of behavior is completely unacceptable, and I can't people are overlooking what he's done just because his view happens to coincide with their own.

Only reason i'm making such a big fuss is because this is related to gaming, wouldn't even bat an eye otherwise.

I'm not playing a "game." I'm just not interested in vilifying someone for making valid statements just because they failed to attach an internet-proof filter to them. He was ruder than I would have been. Okay, fine. He acknowledged that, he apologized for it, why even talk about it anymore? I'm much more interested in his actual arguments than in his tone. It's weird to me that so many others are so fixated on the guy's personality or whatever.

I'm "fixated" on his attitude because nobodyhas the right to insult someone in public professional setting like that and apologize 2 days later (when pressured by the community mind you) with a half-assed apology. When was it ever acceptable to condone that type of behaviour? I'm not mad because he failed to Internet proof his posts; Its because failed to show some fucking decency and respect for another human being. You're actually baffled as to why people are getting worked over this guys immoral self indulgent behaviour? Of course we'd get mad, I would if some dude called me out in public in front of dozens of people at a public setting.

But whatever, I don't agree with his point, so there isn't much else to talk about at this point.

I don't know enough about the state of the industry to say for sure, but America is certainly where the excitement is right now.

It's probably fairer to say that the Japanese industry is "stagnant" rather than that their games are bad, though. The comment was slightly irresponsible but probably harmless based on what I read.
No, that's pretty much the state of the industry. The Japanese game industry is in huge trouble and have been for most of this generation. They've been unable to adapt and the West has completely taken over on consoles. The West was always stronger on PC. Handhelds are the only place the Japanese publishers are thriving and that's being slowly killed off by phones.

This is by any means the best way to describe Japanese gaming right now.

For handhelds, the most viable market are the casual gamers, which is also targeted by smartphones, thus unsurprisingly, smartphone wins out.

Personally, I love Japanese games. Creativity is not an issue even nowadays, it's just the market and technology is evolving on which such games are unable to cope with...

Well I think there's a distinction to be made between "Japanese games" and "the Japanese gaming industry." Maybe it's clear that they're "losing" in terms of profitability or whatever (I haven't done any actual research so I'll just take your word on that, and Inafune's, and a bunch of journalists for that matter). Maybe it's less clear that their games are actually "worse," though? I feel like you can't criticize their overreliance on jRPGs without bringing up our obsession with equally-stagnant FPS games, for example. It seems like the best argument in favor of western games being "better" is the indie scene, in which case it's weird to even speak in "East versus West" terms in the first place.

This might be slightly relevant, idk. The criticisms here do apply to many mainstream Western games, and don't apply to many mainstream Japanese games, but at any rate, if you wanted someone to explain to you calmly why they don't like modern Zelda or Mario or whatever, here you go.

It's totally relevant, particularly his last sentence. Paraphrased: "there's an interesting design discussion to be had here, and I wish that were the focus here instead of just the controversy."
