Max attack neutral nature mega starmie hits about the same/a little harder than choice banded 252+ atk urshifu using the same water move while having comparable bulk, better speed, and a still pretty good spatk and movepool. Urshifu still does urshifu stuff so it's still gonna be amazing, but the fact that it needs to use a choice item just to hit the same level of physical attack as mega starmie means that you can make a valid argument for either/both in vgc.

Yeah, but Mega Starmie is way faster and hits about as hard as Urshifu-R.

Urshifu does hit harder after Tera Water, but its not a direct upgrade. It’s more of a side grade as Mega Starmie does a lot of things Urshifu can’t or is better at. Like fighting Amoongus, which Starmie threats massively.

Anyway, I was looking through some of the form data texts to see if any of the new Mega Evolutions change the Pokémon’s category in the Pokédex (since forms have been increasingly allowed to do that), and indeed, two do: Feraligatr, the Big Jaw Pokémon, becomes Mega Feraligatr, the Double Jaw Pokémon, while Drampa, the Placid Pokémon, becomes Mega Drampa, the Imposing Pokémon.
(I also noticed that Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist’s form names have been changed from Average, Small, Large, and Super Size to Medium, Small, Large, and Jumbo Variety. Presumably they’ve had to rework these two a bit to account for the fact that all Pokémon can be of various sizes now.)

Update to my earlier tier list from some other thread:
Mega Barbaracle in particular was a case where the icon of its face looked awesome and then you see the full body and wonder why so many megas only care about bench press and hate leg day so much.

Excluding Jolteon, Zapdos, and Raikou (for obvious reasons), that only expands to include Electivire, Luxray, and Pachirisu. Or Rotom I guess but that seems very unlikely given that it has so many forms.
It also seems very unlikely they'd have done Mega Electivire without Mega Magmortar since that pairing of lines is one really seem to want keep intact.
I wonder if part of the reason people aren't happy with MGatr is because it's a fairly gimmicky design, while the other two starters got fairly "normal" ones.
Imagine if Goku went Super Saiyan, and instead of getting the iconic golden hair cut with energy flowing out of it, Goku gets a toilet seat that lets him resemble himself at 13.
The concept for the design would be better if the helmet stuck to its head and resembled a knight or warrior helmet. Maybe even adding a club too.
tbh i just feel like in this case feraligatr would benefit from a more "normal" design
it's already a very complete mon in it of itself in terms of design and in trying to go for something more "gimmicky" all they did was make the mega suffer for their attempts at being gimmicky.
when animated, it's fine. but its idle just kinda suffers way too much for me to want to like this mega.
Now this is exactly the sort of inconsequential thing I've been waiting to hear about! I've always suspected that Pumpkaboo and Gourgheist were excluded from SV specifically because GameFreak had to rework them to take into account the Scale value that is used by those games. It would have been very odd to have a Super Size pumpkin be eligible for the Mini Mark, for example. The renaming of Super Size to align with the Jumbo mark tells me that the form of the pumpkin is locked to specific ranges that determine the size classification that can be seen on a Pokémon's summary screen.
However, what are all of the possible size classifications in this game? Is there a classification below Small and if so, can a Pumpkaboo or Gourgheist have that classification on its summary screen?
By the way, I still haven't dropped my suspicion that a size classification reworking, perhaps even involving the pumpkins (who last appeared in SS), may have contributed to the lack of backwards compatibility for Pokémon via HOME.
Dragagle and Scolipede: They're just really good, for dragalge its exactly what you would expect the mega to look like and they executed it perfectly, scolipede was hard to envision what a mega scolipede would look like and fan art has come up with cursed abominations but GF made the best case scenario possible and beats pretty much everyone's expectations on it.
Chandelure/Dragonite/Delphox: Chandelure's weird 1 eye thing triggers my OCD but otherwise its a great design.. they should've given it a monocle at least like its some rich guy's possessed chandelier. Dragonite the wings would've just been so much better on the back. I don't care for facial hair on pokemon, so delphox's beard is just pointless especially when a lot associated it with a feminine witch design. We already had a moustache on thievul that ruined its design idk why they wanted to do it again. Greninja/Floette are fine designs but I think I would've preferred them some other way. Like mega floette feels like a robbery to florges not getting a mega and mega greninja looks like that tongue would create some very cursed screenshots descending down like that.
Skarm/Hawlucha: I think skarm just looks too much like base skarmory, which isn't that bad but it doesn't do much besides remove from what base skarmory's appeal was (blade wings) and move it to feet. Hawlucha looks like a unite skin and I can't unsee that feather as a dick. Meganium just feels too simple like give it spikes on its tail and back or something.
Excadrill/Zygarde: I don't think I've ever asked for another zygarde form and I don't think this is making me appreciate having one either. I really miss pre-sun and moon when zygarde was a snake/slug thing and it has deviated so much away from that so having what is essentially a double complete form doesn't interest me. Excadrill just looks too ridiculous, they could've made it shorter.
Starmie: Starmie is one of those designs where it is so stupid but when animated its so goofy you appreciate the vision and realize that it actually does bring you some joy by existing, so I'll give it a pass.
The rest: Pyroar fucking sucks, especially since there isn't a female variant of it, idk why they made pyroar just always appear male for the mega. Raichu Y is just worse than X fight me, and I don't think we need 2 raichus. Feraligatr I both never cared about and don't think this was the best possible thing they could've went with for it, they could've come up with something better cause its just too forced.
It's clearer in the animation than the still image, but the top part of the mane actually extends back into female pyroar's hair. So male mega pyroar grows a ponytail and female mega pyroar grows a beard.
I do like the Pyroar design, turning the Flame Kanji mane into Blaze is perfect but is kind of lost to those who dont get the symbolism. however I do wonder if a female form could have been salvaged...as far as I know no mega has gender differences, right? I think even female mega garchomps gain a notched fin. Still, I think making it the kanji from Fire to Flame makes perfect sense (火炎)
EDIT: I am indeed aware the female mane lingers, I just cant remember if any mega has gender differences between them. Like Im sure there is no seed in Mega venusaur either.

basically anything other than this giant eye-catching red chunk of....well honestly the art style makes me think of like plastic lmao but I presume carapace or scales or whatever, that just just outs of the base of the neck before clamping down.
Here's my tierlist based on the designs.
Skarmory gets bonus points for its shiny giving it a Gold form and a Silver form.
The designs at the bottom are the ones I feel like are the laziest or are too gimmicky in design. Mega Starmie literally just being "Starmie but with longer legs" is just peak laziness. There are dozens of ways you could have made Mega Starmie, like making it a shooting star or having the gem come out with little Starmies orbiting it. Nah just make the legs longer bro.
Also don't know about anyone else, but does anyone think GameFreak used AI to design some of the Megas? I feel like Mega Raichus they typed "Design a Mega Evolution for Raichu that incorporates the letter X into its design". I just know they are AI generated, I just can't prove it.
Yeah that would be weird. Sure hope there arent any iconic examples of the series that makes them become much stronger while also being much younger
