The nickname is a reference to the eponymous microbe from American author John Michael Crichton's 1969 techno-thriller The Andromeda Strain.
The story follows a team from an Air Force base, deployed to recover a military satellite that has returned to Earth, but contact is lost abruptly.
When people start dying in Piedmont, Arizona, the duty officer of the base suspects that the satellite returned with an extra-terrestrial contaminant.
As it turns out, the microbe responsible for the deaths got carried by a meteor that ended up crashing into the satellite, knocking it from orbit.
The nickname was chosen for a Deoxys, since it is an alien virus that fell to Earth on a meteor before undergoing a DNA mutation.
Much like how Deoxys can change forms, the ❝Andromeda❞ microbe mutates with each growth cycle, changing its biological properties.
