Meloetta

Interesting. That really hurts the viability of a Choice Band set on the Step Forme, since err well, you can't use Ancient Song and then switch moves. Fortunately, the move isn't totally useless on its own.

Ancient Song: Normal Special PP: 10 / Power: 75 / Accuracy: 100
May put Target to sleep (10%).

That means that the move has a 20% chance to induce sleep with Serene Grace, which is actually pretty legitimate. It means, however, that you're probably not going to run Choice sets and that you're probably going to have to forfeit Quick Attack to use it.

@to Rising_Dusk: There goes the choice set i suggested earlier :(
whatever them at least it means that meloia can change her typing when against, for example, a tyranitar trying to pursuit trap her to death, changing to step form to resist the hit and while doing damage, hell even with a little chance to put it to sleep, so is not like everything is lost.

I just hope an "Ancient Song or Calm Mind?" mind game isn't too gimmicky. Or maybe even Cheer Up and then switch around with Ancient Song for versatility.

By versatility I mean getting Blissey out of the way.

Psycho Shock is reason enough to be more enthused about the special forme.

Meloia @ Leftovers
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Psycho Shock
- Substitute / Psychic
- Thunder / Focus Blast / Psychic

Calm mind late game, and hit the opponent all day with your psyho shock or psychic, whichever defense is weaker on the pokemon. Could be sick, but im just theorymoning.

It seems that Meloetta's signature move is Ancient Song (Normal type, 70 BP special attack with 10% chance of Sleep).
Like Kyuremu and Victini's signature moves, it's supposedly learned in a "special way".
How would sleep clause work with said move if she learns it?

It activates Sleep Clause. Like all the other Sleep inducing moves.
Ancient Song really hurts the viability of a physical Choice set which is a shame as it would have been great.
I do like the Psycho Shock set even though it looks like it has its counters.

step form - serence grace
+speed-spatk, 14hp / 248speed / 248atk (or 252/252)

Possible sets: (not listed)

1.lansat berry + sub (berry lets you increase crit to have that serence grace luck...)
2.razor claw/scope lens (if you don't feel like using substitute...)

moves:
1.sub, shadow claw, close combat, quick attack/stone edge (u-turn is doable except when the berry is used.)
2.as listed; close combat, quick attack, u-turn, shadow claw/stone edge

That ancient song really hurt the cute thing as far as choiced-step, but it still won't render it useless. As stated before, Meloetta normal is still fairly useful, and its natural bulk will let it take a hit before turning into step, and the 20% chance for sleep can also be a big asset.

for what i heard to get step form you need to use a move called ancient voice/sound special 75bp 100 Acc normal type this means step form wont be much viable because you always start with normal/psychic type need to waste moveslot for ancient song plus if it reverts back to normal psychic when switched i dont see use to step form since your oponents sends a ghost and blocks the form change

Well im deffinetly not going to use a turn to get to the Inferior form >_<.Psycho shock is just going to rape with this thing =P and i really think the CM set has a lot of potential.Id probably go with CM,Psycho Shock,Thunderbolt,Sub/Focus Blast.Psycho Shock for the sheer awesomeness and it kinda beats blissey see...Thunderbolt gives good coverage alongside it and Sub is just a good filler and Maybe Focus blast for Ttar?

I do like the Psycho Shock set even though it looks like it has its counters.

I think the mechanic in question here is how will it be handled if an opponent is already asleep, as there have been no moves with an added chance effect of sleep up until now (with the exception of Secret Power, which I do not believe anyone has ever tried to use competitively). All the sleep moves have just outright failed when used with a sleeping Pokemon on the other side of the field in a simulator, or not been used because they have no other purpose in-game. The simulators can be programmed to simply remove the sleep chance if sleep clause is in effect, I'd suppose. Obviously, we cannot force Pokemon to NOT fall asleep in game, so does this mean putting an opponent to sleep just screws over Meloia-S?

Ancient Song has no effect to Ghost.

I am thinking about the proper item for her.

Meloetta @ Life Orb
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Nature: Jolly (+Spe, -SpA)
~ Ancient Song
~ Close Combat
~ Shadow Claw
~ Return
Is that OK?

Meloia@ Leftovers
Bold
252 HP / 100 Def / 156 SpD
Charge Beam (100% chance of boost)
Psychic (20% chance of drop)
Grass Knot
Hidden Power Fire

Perhaps it would be possible to fit in TWave somewhere here, instead of HP Fire or Grass Knot? With her mediocre speed, Meloia would definitely appreciate the ability to paralyze her foes, though losing out on some of the type coverage is a shame. Also, how about Psycho Shock instead of Psychic? Something like:

- Charge Beam
- Psycho Shock
- Thunder Wave
- Grass Knot / HP Fire

Eh, Charge Beam and maybe Psychic and Ancient Song are really the only moves I can see making any use of Serence Grace. Why do none of the new Serence Gracers get Body Slam or some nice flinchhaxing move? :( Ancient Song being necessary for the Step Forme is a bit of a shame, too. The CM set looks pretty good though.

OK... So details have now emerged about Meloia's signature move (#547 - 'Ancient Song') and her alternate Forme: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/989552-pokemon-black-version/56460375

After a bit of testing, I now know the following:
- Every time Ancient Song is used in battle, Meloia changes Forme
- Outside of battle, Meloia is always in her Voice Forme, even if you finished a battle in her Step Forme

This means it is only possible to begin a battle in Voice Forme.

When you change to step forme, if you switch, does it remain in step forme or revert to voice forme again?

I think the versatility of this Pokemon is underrated. I really would suggest a "mixed" set for Meloetta, something like:
Hasty [EVs mostly in Attack and Speed, remainder in Special Attack] @ Life Orb
Ancient Song
Thunderbolt/Psychic/Shadow Ball
Close Combat
Shadow Claw/Return/U-Turn

I personally just love this Pokemon as a lure, show a special move besides Ancient Song and Sazando will likely be coming in, use Ancient Song, take the not very effective Crunch and threaten the CC. I feel like there's so much potential in this Pokemon, I really want to see how it works in Gen 5, and hope it gets some time to shine in OU.

I'm using the defensive form of Meloetta in my team

Serene Grace
Bold
Leftovers
252 Def / 252 HP

Calm Mind
Psycho Shock
HP Fire
Focus Blast

She'll be taking none of blissey's shenanigans with Psycho Shock. HP Fire is for steel types like Scizor, Metagross, Jirachi that don't care about Psycho or Focus Blast. FB is for Tyranitar and such.

Maybe
Meloetta
Hasty (-Def/+Spd)
252 Speed
252 Defense

Cheer Up
Psycho Shock/Psychic
Close Combat
Ancient Voice

This is totally Theorymoning.

252 Defense on Hasty?

Cheer Up may hold potential but Meloetta falls to a MASSIVE 4-moveslot syndrome then.

I've been using Voice form Meloetta as a special wall and she's brilliant. She takes no more than 30% from Sazandora's Draco Meteor, which is really great. I'm not sure if I had Light Screen up, but I'm fairly sure I didn't because it happened twice in separate battles. I was running Thunder Wave/Light Screen/Thunderbolt/Perish Song, and can safely switch in to just about any special attack.

Meloetta@Leftovers
252 ATK, 252 SPE, 4 HP
Adamant (+Atk, -SAtk)
~Close Combat
~Shadow Claw
~Substitute
~Ancient Song

I've been using this to a certain level of success, although it requires a bit of team support. I realized in the matches I played nobody switched in a ghost to 'block' her transformation at all. However, I always use Sub first in the case of that happening. However once she gets into Stepmode 128 ATK and 128 SPE lets her rip through everything, except stuff like Burukuneru and other Bulky Ghosts that take ~48%ish from Shadow Claw usually.

Meloetta is not meant to be a stand-alone set-up sweeper like Salamence or the rest, but I like her way too much to not let her be in the limelight. :toast:

I threw together a quick choice scarf set and tested it some on pokémon online. It seems to work fairly well, though I need to make some changes to the set. Here's what I'm running right now:

Meloetta @ Choice Scarf
252 SpA, 252 Spe, 6 HP
Timid

Psychic
Energy Ball
Hyper Voice
Shadow Ball

Will probably change Energy Ball to Thunder Bolt. Psychic and Shadow Ball make use of her excellent ability, though Psychic will probably need to be changed to Psycho Shock to deal with Blissey switch ins, at which point Hyper Voice becomes her strongest attack.

Speaking of the old fat pink blob, I haven't seen a Blissey outside of my own yet. Wonder why...

@Dave

That's true. 4 Slot syndrome will be problematic but that shouldnt stop you from actually thinking about it. Meloetta isn't two seperate pokemon. It's 2 pokemon in one. Cheer up is the best way to abuse that.

Meloetta @Life Orb
Nature: Hasty
Evs: 252 Speed / Atk / Sp Atk
Cheer Up
Psycho Shock/Psychic
Close Combat
Ancient Voice

This set is best used late game, when counters are known and / or dealt with. The choice Between Psycho Shock and Psychic should be based on which one you need more. Target Def or Sp. Def respectively. Close combat is for Step Forme's STAB for when it comes into play. Also while Step Forme's Sp. Atk is Subpar at best Cheer up will allow it to use Ancient Voice which it's forced to use.

I'm no good with Evs so if someone could quote this set for better evs that'd be great.

I don't know evs that well but I do know a hard counter when I see one. The water / Ghost can wall this set; Especially if Meloetta's in her step forme. If in her Voice Forme that water ghost will eventually fall to cheer up psycho shock / psychic.

He had the right idea but the wrong evs and no item. If we can find some way of abusing this, it'll most likely make Meloetta all the better.

The Water/Ghost has pretty decent Special Defense, but its physical defense just won't cut it. If boosted, Meloetta can cut right through it.

@ Yilx: Don't forget, she has U-turn. That's always a good option on Choice Scarf sets.

Dont unederstimate burungeru, with a spreed of 252 hp/ 172 def/ 84 spe he can take a beating and cripple the oponent with WoW:

scarf garchomp outrage 43.3% - 51.2%
mix mence outrage 58.2% - 68.6%
mix mence draco meteor 57.2% - 67.6%

Also as a reminder burungueru blocks ancient song, so if he switch in meloetta stay on his normal form
