yay! Smogon has a Minecraft Server!

Hi, I've been playing Minecraft for a while now, and been loving the game
I'm now on the smogon server (and quite a lot) under the username "CHUKLAE" (though if you see me there, please refer to me as Dark Pulse [or DP, or Dark] - I didn't choose the name)

Here's my latest statue! This doesn't have a name yet -- suggest one to me! I tried to give it an aged look. It's a little crumbly at the bottom, with moss slowly growing up the stone, but it's not in ruin yet! The statue holds both lava and water...there's a metaphor in there somewhere, but you can come up with it yourself :P

How about "Armpit Man!" he has a lot of lava and water coming out of his armpits, maybe he should use Old Spice...

Yay what's sup chuckles my hero (see what I did there)
Anyway does anyone know how the neather is going to be like in smp. I mean it comes out in 1.6 and we don't know how much it will lag by or if we will have to get another server. If it's the second case IMO I would not bother getting it.
 
There's no negotiating with it, I think when it arrives we're forced to have it since servers need to be on the same version as the client. I guess we'll have to see if it lags the server or not when it arrives, but if it did, I suspect notch would refrain from adding it in. I personally can't wait to make a nether city (god knows how this is possible with Ghasts) and get netherrack.
 
It's possible to go to the nether in SMP already, though it requires switching the whole server round, so everyone has to go there.
 
I love this game I started playing it, I found a naturally floating platform and decided to build my house (my fourth one)
I took so long, it was made out of wood that took a heck of a long time to get it was awesome I was proud of it it had a water elevator that went on, I found Diamonds from cavern sections connected to it. I was so happy, then I decided to build a fireplace, I however had enough clay for 5 bricks
I tried different forms but the fireplace couldnt work with 5 bricks no matter how economically friendly
So I decided how about I do a stone fire place with nice smooth stone not the ugly cobblestone

I built it all purpose I made sure and cracks were dealt with and that the fire didnt touch the fire at all.
It went fine for the first couple of seconds I was proud of myself then............

It went on fire everything burnt then I got my emergency bucket and tried to douse it like here. It didnt work.....

My work is all gone

Minecraft can be so incredibly cruel
Either that or I made a stupid mistake

I've seen a very simmilar video here

that's why you either:
1. Make your house out of stone
2. don't have a fireplace in your wooden home.

IMO - go for option 1.

Stone houses also have the nice niche of being mildly creeper-resistant, and not even the lowest of thieves would steal stone, but wood can be worth stealing if there isn't a forest nearby (in multiplayer)

Yeah I saw that video after my wooden house burnt down :/
I hate stone houses because they are ugly smooth or not, but yeah I realised in my first house I had a stack of bone meal, so then I started extreme farming for wood and not so long later my house was reborn
I think I will try again but make sure I have a brick border around my fireplace that is 3 blocks thick. But if it wont work please tell me.
Also Im finding that branch mining for diamond is incredibly boring and I like to go into huge cavern systems which I love exploring

PLEASE HELP ME! Some one tell me how the heck you use the gosh dang mods... I have been installing and reinstalling the grey goo mod and biosphere mod (and of coase the mod loader) more times than I can count and I'm running out of hair to pull out of my head!11!!!

I'm on windows 7 (64 bit) and I'm using WinRAR and 7Zip and NEITHER OF THEM WORK!!!!!! Please tell me the secret to these mods before I lose my voice screaming and get dehydrated crying myself to sleep...
 
Here is a protip for anybody:

When you find a 5 full Diamond vien dont get too excited and fall into the lava pool behind you :/
Lost 64 pieces of coal 100+ arrows, 100+ torches and a load of other crap the bright side is I didnt take any iron or diamond with me. But yeah my 10th expedition into the biggest cavern I have found ended in my second failure

I have a lot to learn
 
Protip: Block off Lava using cobble, just make it so you can't get into it without jumping or breaking the cobble. You'll live far more often that way.

And/or always carry a water bucket.
 
Yeah, I did that except I didnt cover up all the lava, and I died in like 1 second so I didnt even have time to think.
For some reason I cant put Netherack into lava (I always carry it for emergency torch lighting purposes)
So can you only put Cobble in lava?
 
like the house Idea sy123, but I don't think it's a brick border you need... all you really need to do is keep all other wood FAR AWAY from your fireplace - IE at least 3 blocks in any direction...
if you look at fires and lava in minecraft, you often see a "spark" or "ember" jump out and land on the ground, only to extinguish straight after. I have found that this ember actually starts fires on wood (I tested it by running a river of lava down past a single tree) - as a result, I say to simply keep your wood away from any fire/lava - just to be safe...

IMO you shouldn't be having a fireplace anyway... I don't see any practical use for it, and even if it's just for looks, fire doesn't actually look that good... an empty fireplace would look just as good... (maybe put a torch out of sight above/below the fireplace to make it look bright like it's on)

I'm starting to muck around with MCedit, and am going to be building a giant castle of obsidain (or smoothstone) soon! I'll post a screenshot when it's done.
 
No, you can place any non flammable block in lava, as long as you are attaching it to an actual block. Think of it as water, you have to build off the sea floor or off the beach.

Water bucket is useful cause you just place it on a block near the lava, and then you get make all that lava obsidian. Way more practical.
 
Thanks for the tips guys, Ill be sure to use them, maybe I should have the fireplace at the bottom of my water elevator, things are coming along nicely, until I noticed............. MY DIAMOND PICK AXE AND SHOVEL AND SWORD ARE GONE!!!

I think I have finnally found what niche I like in minecraft, and thats creating traps and exploring caverns. Its probably common for everybody, but then again I know people who love destroying endless cobblestone until they find diamond Im too impatient for that :)

Look, read the fucking OP for the Grey Goo mod. If you still don't have a clue, the Grey Goo mod requires Modloader V1.3_01. What does this mean? That's right, it's for Minecraft version 1.3_01. It's outdated.

Anyway I've been having a whole lot of fun on my class server. We're currently exploring the north of the map; our aim is to light the north! We have been building outposts and placing torches.
 
how do i become a part of the smogcraft server? i have been playing minecraft with my friends for a month now but we are all on at different times and this hampers our ability to do anything

What I did was pm dan your minecraft account name so your on the whitelist, then go to #smogcast on irc for the ip and such.

Also if you join follow the rules.
