Media Minecraft Discussion Thread

Minecraft is so much fun!

I wonder how you'll get to sky world? I think it will be a giant bean-stalk. Anyone else got any idea, or know how?

perhaps a new variety of Portal?

or maybe a portal needs to be built above a certain Height level?

I sure Hope not! I hate portals! They are loud, noisy, and (at least on my alpha-generated world) illogical about where the lead too. Maybe he'll fix that in 1.7 (or whenever sky world comes out)

Notch tweeted this morning that 1.6 is likely to be out Wedsnesday, maybe Thursday. So as an advanced notice, be warned it's probable that we'll be without home and warps for a couple days while Bukkit updates. Make sure you aren't stranded somewhere with none of your resources!

EDIT: To add to Xaqs post, there is a discussion going on in the social group about the best way to tackle the Nether. Please refer there before building random portals.

Dear everyone,

It has come to my attention that using the nether will be made possible in 1.6. I'd like to formally request that we don't have like a bajillion as they make loud mutated toilet noises. If you're gonna make one in the middle of LSB, don't. We have a portal close enough to it along Neptune's bridge and it's been there for who knows how long. It definitely gets seniority over any other lame, in-the-way portals.

Sincerely,
Xaq

Yeah we've been discussing the Nether as part of the server in the minecraft group.

One other thing about the portals, like the one of the bridge I made a gazillion years ago ensure that it is covered in stone and that no dimension is larger than 4 * 4. There is a rare chance that a ghast can appear next to a portal, and we wouldn't want that now would we?

I've been saying the same thing for when building IN the Nether (yes, I'm still saying transport for the Nether, but a Town wouldn't be safe, and Mining doesn't need to be made as strict)

while Zombie Pigmen are Neutral, DON'T ATTACK THEM if there are Players nearby all nearby Zombie Pigmen will become aggresive and attack you, and then any nearby players (yes, if you aren't nearby, they will just attack other players) - This can be considered Griefing!

also, if Building, you may want to Ghast-Proof yourself, that is:

Use Cobblestone or Higher for external walls (blast resistance) - Ghast Fireballs have an explosion Power of 20.17 - so anything less than that will be destroyed by a ghast's Fireball Netherrack is NOT ghast Proof

Use an Iron, not a Wood Door same reason as above

Block up any Windows with Glass - While glass is not Blast resistant, Ghasts wont Shoot at you

if you are behind it - they may still stare at you, but they won't fire...

Don't use Lava as a wall - While Lava is not Transperant, Ghasts can still fire at you from the other side of it, meaning that you will have no warning that a Ghast is about to blow you up. Also if the Lava is disruted by the Explosion, it may fall around you, trapping you and preventing your Escape

Also, yesterday he updated his blog with the changelog for 1.6, it can be found here!

Additions:

+ Added Nether support to multiplayer
+ Added craftable maps
+ Added hatches
+ Added tall grass in some biomes
+ Mushrooms now spreads (very) slowly
+ Added server property view-distance. Sets the radius of terrain updates (in chunks) to send to the players. Range 3-15, default 10.

the rest are bug fixes, but there are LOTS. I expect we might have to wait a while for the dev. team to update Bukkit, but who knows they could already be working on it :O

* Fixed minecarts next to each other causing extreme velocities (sorry!)

hah hah!!!! no more "boosters"

* Fixed arrows being animated really strangely in multiplayer - aww, the arrows looked Awesome flying sideways

* Fixed loads of exploding tnt generating way too many particles, possibly crashing the client - This may be a good sign, TNT houses for everyone!!! (just joking, don't ban me!)

those were the 3 "bug fixes" that I noticed most

The ones I really like are:

* Fixed anaglyph 3d rendering mode having severe visual bugs - I actually tried this yesterday once I got some glasses from seeing 3D Thor, and it was shit! Maybe it now does true 3D, it'll be a fun feature :P

* Fixed ice so it regenerates regardless of whether it’s snowing or not - nice, maybe we can make stuff with ice ceilings now (it looks uber cool, geddit?)

* Fixed creepers retaining charge level when they can’t see their target - this annoyed the shit out of me, having perma fat creepers that insta exploded on site was a pain in the ass.

* Fixed arrows being animated really strangely in multiplayer - yay, no more spastic arrows.

* Fixed buttons and levers too close to the player being impossible to use - annoyed the crap out of me, and it also annoyed Dan in his latest smogcraft vid.

one thing Dan, although It's completely off the current topic:

what texpack were you using when you filmed Latveria??? I'ts really nice. I like how it only had the subtle differences like Cobblestone and Glass

and of course the Pumpkins, you gotta love those pumpkins...

----------------------------------------

back on topic, :O - they removed the effect of the "toaster" trap??? this can't be good for many trap-makers

he explains in the video it is a homemade mishmash of bits of ones he likes, iirc

That really needs some explanation, first Notch screwed over Hamsterdam, now Skysoar?

I call getting a mod to fix this if Skysoar getting screwed.

The mobile version of Minecraft, currently in development by Mojang AB, will initially be released exclusively on the Android-based Xperia Play from Sony Ericsson, Gamasutra has learned. The news came after an invite to a special E3 after hours party that will include what sounds like a playable version of Minecraft on the Xperia Play.

"When playing on smartphones you will have a different screen size compared to PC, different hardware, different attention spans and thus the game needs to be customized to fit the mobile specifications," said a spokesperson for Mojang when speaking with Gamasutra.

The release date of the mobile version is not known at this time, though it will likely follow suit with Minecraft by releasing early with consistent updates, Gamasutra said. The length of the exclusivity for the Xperia Play is also not known.

More details are expected to be announced at the upcoming Sony mixer during E3, which is being held June 6 to June 9, 2011. We'll be on hand at E3 and will provide any new information we discover on Minecraft and its mobile counterpart.

This is gonna be p. sweet, albeit weird. I can't wait for E3 if it's going to be shown cos I wanna know more about this.

smogcraft: mobile, the next generation of smogcraft
inb4 i missed this being discussed already

Neptune, the "Toaster Trap" is a trap where either Burning Netherrack or Lava is concealed behind blocks, and mobs are pushed into it, taking damage (but not getting burned I'm pree sure) - although it only worked from one Direction, West/southwest...

Minecraft Wiki said:
"Toaster" Trap A directionally-dependent trap, the east sides of blocks holding lava or consisting of burning netherrack will cause a half-heart damage to players or mobs on normal difficulty. Likewise, the north-east corner of a single contained block of lava or burning material will do the same. The so-called Toaster Trap uses water to push the desired victims towards the west or south-west to trap them against the burning side but retain any items due to the fact that the fire/lava is covered and doesn't touch them directly. It only means the very, very top layer, 128. It was probably done to fix the glitch where you turn invisible if you stand on that layer. Skysoar isn't getting screwed :p

I can't wait to fix all the griefing \o/

PS 1.6 is out! But:

Minecraft 1.6 High CPU

With the 1.6 update coming out this morning, we've been updating & testing this to make it compatiable with Clanforge.
We've come across an issue where the server currently uses 100% of a CPU core per player!
Due to this, we are not currently able to install this version.

So the server's still on 1.5. If you haven't updated your client yet, you can still play.

This is also another reminder that it's likely we'll be Vanilla for a while, with no warps or commands, so be prepared for that!

Good news:

Update @ 15:20: 1.6.4 has been released which has fixed the known CPU issue introduced in 1.6. We are working on releasing this version as quickly as possible.

So hopefully the server will be updated soon, despite there being no commands for a while.

Ok current state of play is 1.6.4 fixes the CPU issue but it still has SERIOUS ISSUES with chunk loading.

We are currently creating a vanilla version for release but advise people to NOT use it as you WILL have issues!

So yeah, I'm not going to risk it and wait for a stable build. For those who have updated, you're going to have to wait a while to play on Smogcraft, unless of course you were smart and backed up your minecraft.jar before updating!
