is there any franchise in baseball worse than the new york mets right now? relative to expectations, i mean. obviously baltimore, pitt, cleveland, etc are worse performance wise...but no one expected them to do anything.
the mets are run by management that openly tricks its fanbase (team affiliated sites seemed to be reporting all during may/june the mets making runs for cliff lee. lee gets traded and now its come to light that not only did the mets never seriously talk with seattle, they can't even take on payroll), management that accuses its beat writers of falsifying stories (omar minaya - adam rubin spat last year), owners that won't own up to being broke (they say that they cannot add payroll. did they forget they play in new york?), and an absolute idiot for a manager.
the mets have looked like a zombie-like team since 2007 collapse and yet their management keeps preaching that they were *this* close to winning and only 1-2 pieces away. 3 years later, and they are going down, down, down, flushing away the primes of david wright, jose reyes, and johan santana. if there's one thing the mets lead the league in, it's heartbreak, broken promises, and shattered dreams.
