Ryan Howard just got thrown out of the game.

There are no more position players left for the Phillies.

A Pitcher has to play 1st base.

For real man, I watched that whole game. To make it worse, it was blown with an 0-2 count on a pitch that was supposed to be out of the strikezone...my coach would kill me. I don't recall the relievers name that was pitching, but if I had a 97+ fastball with sink, I would be working down in the zone. Very good game though, the Rangers are definitely one of the most talented teams this year.

I think the reliever's name was Neftali Feliz or something and he's got like 33 saves

Yessir! Pitchers are the best athletes on the field!

. . . Ok so he's not that good of an athlete from the highlights I just saw

. . . Well, at least he didn't strike out with a chance to win the game

The Braves lose EPICALLY to the Rockies and the Phils follow that up by wasting another great pitching performance. Dear God this team is going to make me grow grey hairs.

We could be in the division lead but instead we're the same place we were a month ago.

Then again when Ryan Howard goes 1-11 with 8ks in a series, you're not going to win much.

Meh Howard just got off the DL and everyone sucks the first couple days that they're of the DL, (Manny,Utley,Pedroia) but they get better, Manny just went 2 for 2 with 2 doubles

Phillies definitely rushed Howard and Utley back. their season hinges on Utley getting "it" back in time for a stretch run. being out 7 weeks is a long time. and he wasn't really playing great baseball before that.

although seriously, it won't even matter. barring an act of god, i can't see ANY NL team beating the AL pennant winner (Twins, Yankees, Rangers, Rays, or Red Sox). it's almost laughable to compare the NL playoff class (Braves, Phillies, Padres, Reds, Cards) to the AL class (aforementioned five AL teams).

lol Red Sox

All the AL teams have some weakness that could be their Achilles heel. Well except for the Yankees.

Rays - Hitting, although they find a way to score anyway.
Rangers - Starting pitching, inexperience. Outside of Lee and C.J. Wilson, I don't trust anyone in that lineup.
Twins - Starting pitching, injuries (namely Justin Morneau), Bullpen

Of course the NL playoff teams do all have significant flaws as well. Padres are the most complete and then it's a toss up from there.

September will define these teams

lol Red Sox long shot, but still better than any NL team

All teams in bold have the same issues as you said...the only difference is that the AL counterparts are top-to-bottom better (lineup and pitching). Cards and Phillies have the best shot, but they both need to do work to even get into the playoffs!

that being said, anything can happen in a 7 game series (2006 83 win champion Cardinals for example) and it would be interesting to see what happens if the Padres win the pennant and get homefield advantage with Petco. that could actually be a gamechanger.

strasburg probably will need tommy john surgery

i literally feel like crying

maybe it's karma (this is WASHINGTON DC after all) but fuck, can DMV sports get a fucking break?

sean taylor death
arenas getting hurt
now strausburg getting tommy john surgery

holy fuck this town is CURSED

and the real kicker is that we did FUCKING EVERYTHING RIGHT, we limited his innings, we shut him down at the slightest thing, and he STILL gets hurt.

Tangworth KicksAss, the Astros are the second best team at winning after they already won two in a row; for one of the worse teams, they are really good at maintaining momentum against much better teams!

Don't be surprised if the Astros win the division next year. Actually that'd be really surprising but with the Reds being one year wonders and the Cards unable to seize the worst division in the NL, it's possible.

All it takes is one pitch.

What exactly do the Astros have going for them? Don't they have one of the worst minor league systems in the game? The major league roster has been aging and deteriorating the past few seasons and they've traded away Oswalt and Berkman.

Their farm is bad, but it's coming along. Jordan Lyles is fantastic.

ryan madson needs to be closing for the phillies if they want to make the playoffs or advance past the first round. lidge balking in the tying run to the padres is just lol.

also the astros are not winning the central in the next few years without divine intervention. their front office has been bad and their owner has been even more dreadful.

LOL Ed Wade. I honestly have no idea how the guy has a job. Biggest idiot in the world.

Dodgers fan here...I've pretty much given up hope of a postseason right now. But I do hope the dodgers get something/someone good for manny. The Mc-courts need more money for lawyers. Let's hope they get shit settled so we wont have to face a firesale next year.
Also, I am weeping tears of joy at seeing an MLB thread on smogon. This place rocks.
At the same time, ironically enough, I'm crying actual tears over strasburg's busted elbow...feels bad man I hope he makes a full recovery and has a prosperous career.

The injury to Stephen Strasburg may be the single most unfortunate injury ever, certainly the most unfortunate injury I can remember. Now I am a Tigers fan so I don't particularly care about the Nationals, but just look at his statline:
-68.0 IP
-56 Hits
-22 ER (ERA=2.91)
-17 Walks (WHIP=1.07)
-92 Strikeouts (12.2/9 IP)

And now he will never be the same again...

AJ Burnett allowed 9 runs in 4 innings, why girardi hasn't taken him out of the rotation i will never know. Although Tommy John pitchers are never the same, Hong-Chih Kuo has had two but he's one of the dodgers' best relief pitchers. Steven Strasburg isn't gonna be the same but he'll still be a good starter.

Of course he will be a good starter! The thing is though, we may have been deprived of the best starting pitcher in history (who knows what he could have done), and that's not even to mention the impact on Strasburg himself and his family. I honestly don't think sports are worth getting sad about in general, but this is an exception.
