Not a free agent, but longoria who is one of the most talented young players in the game got locked up by tampa for something i think is less then 5 million a year. Thats a steal

That's called a gamble. If he were to have not panned out like he did, it would have been a terrible deal.

eh, not really. That was just a great contract. When the market value of 1 WAR is something insane like 4-5 million a year, the Longoria extension looked pretty great even if it was just 2 months into his first season.

Exactly. And I think the same thing is going to happen with Yu Darvish. People mention Dice-K this Dice-K that but aside from both being Japanese he has nothing in common with Yu. Look at how Colby's numbers projected across from the Japanese leagues to the majors (seeing as he's pitching in the same ballpark that Yu will). His numbers were definitely serviceable for the past two years as a Texas Ranger when he was a little after his prime. Now think about how Yu Darvish is entering his prime and how his numbers across 5 YEARS IN JAPAN absolutely shit all over Colby's in every way, shape or form. Now think about how he has a legitimate 7 pitch arsenal (although I think he'll drop the slurve when he plays in the majors). Not saying he isn't a risk but you're looking at legit TORP upside here, it was definitely worth the chance for the Rangers. CJ Wilson has had only 2 years as a starter in his career (small sample size!) and a tendency to choke in the playoffs (also small sample size but all playoff stats are, and both runs were deep), as well as not much upside. Yet Angels fans everywhere and doubters on the internet keep posting how we should have pursued CJ instead. Fuck that, I'd much rather take my chances with a legitimate potential superstar thankYU very much, even if he has a higher chance at failing! Gotta risk it to get the biscuit.

While watching mlb network yesterday one of the analysts brought up that the longer fielder is a FA, the more likely chance he will remain in the brew crew. Any opinions? Everyone says he will go to texas but that is 100% false. They couldnt keep their #1, and they spent something like 53 million to talk to yu, not even with the contract. They simply have no money for him, also factoring he wants a contract simular to pujols. It seems the brewers are the only team he would fit with.

I'll have to take a look again at the brew crew's financial situation, but I've read that with the financial commitments to A-ram and Aoiki (though money allocated to the latter might not be significant) the Brewers virtually gave up on resigning Prince.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Nation,
Not a rumor was stirring, still a state of trepidation;
Red Stockings were hung out to dry another year,
The hope is Bobby V eradicates ‘chicken and beer’

Theo Epstein was nestled all smug in his bed,
His Craw-Lackey deals nearly left us for dead;
And Werner in his ascot, and John thinking cap,
Stealing rights to Rudolph, after not paying Pap

When out on the web there arose such a clatter,
Did Ben get a closer? Is there a tweet on the matter?
Away to Fenway we flew in a dash,
Tore open the laptop, camera ready to flash

Who’s breaking the story? Is the source in the know?
Is it Madson’s big payday? Did the Sox spend some dough?
When, what to our wondering eyes should appear,
But our old friend Manny, with a smile ear-to-ear

For just $1 million, and no more of his schtick
We knew in a moment, it was Lucchino’s latest trick
More rapid than building the park called JetBlue,
Bobby whistled, and shouted, knowing clearly who’s who

"Now Dauber! now, D-Lowe! now, Nomar and Nixon!
On, Pedro! El Guapo! on, Sanchez and Damon!"
Bobby knows his Red Sox through and through
But he hasn’t been in Baseball since 2002

‘Greatest Team Ever,’ Herald headlines won’t say
They're just hoping not to repeat Team Disarray fade away
But maybe God has different plans, A-Gon will tell all
Carl may learn how to hit, or at least return Bobby’s call

And then, in a twinkling, he strolled to the mound,
The prancing and pawing of this tough talking hound,
He turned into his windup, beer belly twisting around,
Down toward home plate, the ball took off with a bound;

He spoke only to Bobby, then just put in his work,
Sure he dropped a few pounds, but still acts like a jerk,
His eyes—how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!
After a few beers in the dugout—his nose like a cherry!

He threw like the old Beckett, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment, Lone Star had the old kick;
His heater’s mid-nineties, the curve ball has bite,
Mark him down for a win every fifth night!

And Lester and Buchholz look fit, trim, and healthy
Lackey’s chillin’ at home, but he’s so freakin’ wealthy
Dustin showed up real early, Youk looks ready to play
But ‘Tek and Tim Wakefield have long since gone away

Ells keeps getting better, before he says his goodbye
Gonzo feels more at home, but he’s still pretty shy
Papi had the old stroke back, when he hit ‘em they flew,
They all batted around, the unnamed rightfielder, too!

The crowd sprang to their feet, to the team gave a whistle,
Salty circled the bases, Bard threw another missile;
A new year is upon us and the Olde Towne ballclub,
"No more fat, drunk, and lazy! PENNANT FEVER GRIPS HUB!"

Very interesting Toast... I can't help but wonder though: would it really be that bad to suffer one last year of Wakefield before a good SP FA pool? The BoSox wouldn't have to thin their relief pitcher *ahem* depth by moving Bard to the rotation? Outside of a healthy Boston team, I'm really not that frightened of any AL East team...

I dont blame you, the yankees are as intimidating as the pirates, we cant get any fucking pitchers that have major league experience. When the marlins, a 70 million payroll team goes out and signs 3 of the biggest FA and we sit on our asses doing nothing, we can just smell defeat this season.

I wish i could say "Great signing", but since beltran starting to decline in his play i dont know what to say anymore. The giants definitely got crap with signing him, and since his bat was missing he really cant turn to his explosive speed anymore. Decent signing, but he's not worth that money.

5th best OF (wOBA, wRC+) in the NL and accumulated 4.7 WAR. Beltran's bat is still very capable and one of the better bats in the game. his defense is suspect now but he can work in the OF better than Berkman could.

at 2 years, $26M, he's definitely worth the commitment.

I'm not totally against Wakefield coming back to start under the right conditions. What the Red Sox need is pitching depth. Wakefield is a reliable option and you know exactly what you are going to get out of him. The problem is, Wake is getting old and can't handle a SP workload for an entire season.

Both me and many of the people of Sox Nation would be fine with Wake returning if he is willing to sign a minor league contract. The problem is, he wants to pitch in the majors the entire year or retire. If does agree to sign a minor league contract, I'd be more than happy. However, I want to see what the Sox can get from Aceves, Miller, Dubront, and whatever FA we sign/trade for and use Wakefield as an insurance package when injuries come up. I'm thinking the Red Sox are going to make 3 or 4 moves similar to our previous John Smoltz and Brad Penny moves or the Yankees Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia moves. There are plenty of guys out there that are low risk high reward such as Scott Kazmir or Ben Sheets.

I also agree that the Sox should not convert Bard into a starter, but he has been asking to start for years and the move could be a really good call. It's a risky thing to do, but the Sox should not risk turning Bard into a Beantown version of Joba Chamberlin. Keep Bard as the closer of the future with Bobby Jenks and Mark Melancon (sp?) as the set up guys. We have a better pen than what people think if everyone is healthy.

The Red Sox have a good enough 1-2-3 at the top to win. If Aceves pitches like he did last year, we have a ok 4. With Miller, Dubront competing for the 5th spot and with some low risk free agents (Wakefield as a possibility), Atchison, and Dice-K as mid-season replacements if need be, the Sox will be more than fine to compete.

The Yankees finally realize that signing guys like A-Rod and AJ to tons of money for tons of years is hurtful long term to a franchise. In a few years, the Yankees are going to be hurting for money and players when your guys like CC, Jeter, Tex, and A-Rod are eating up roster spots and getting dramatically overpaid. You guys bought your 2009 championship, but now you are going to have to stay pat because of the decisions you made to craft that championship team. Though not as bad or dramatic as the Yankees, the Red Sox and Phillies are also in the same boat, as our clubs have made moves to win now and suffer later.

Teams like Miami and LAA are going all in to win right now, and are willing to suffer through a 40 year old Albert making 25 million a year or a wheel chaired Jose Ryes getting money for being on the DL later on. In a few years, these teams will have to rebuild just like the Yankees are doing now, if not even more drastic.

I wouldnt think of our $150 million+ teams "rebuilding", but i get what you mean. Our offense is absolutely a juggernaught team, quite possibly being the best offense team in the al contending with the rangers respectively. Rather then risking 20 million a year for a pitcher that will only pitch ever 5 days is absurd: i believe to make that money you must play 162 games. I love what the marlins are doing, i believe they will catch lightning in a bottle and run to the WS like the 03 team. I predicted this before they got these signings, check about 10 pages ago. The redsox and yankees i see us losing on intimidation factor, the division for years which was owned by us has now brought the rays and quite possibly the blue jays. I will have no fucking canadians take my AL east title from me. The way contracts are given out to players is IMO wrong. One player regardless of talent should get a base $1 million contract per year, then add incentives. For example, if they play 120+ games(sorry jose) its raised to 5 million, and for stats such as batting 300+ its raised respectively. That way we are not stuck with these ludacris contracts that damage our team, crawford and a-rod we must say are getting payed 10 times what they are worth. Once a-rod is gone or at least traded, and these big burdens are gone i believe they should take part in bringing up prospects and trading for them, a much better way to spend money rather then gamble on 1 year wonders.

Orb, the PA would never agree to that in one million years. However, the Free Agent system does need to be improved.

I always thought that teams should have a franchise tag to prevent some players from leaving small markets. To me, baseball should be about drafting the right guys and making the right trades in order to win, not a battle between who can spend the most money. It's truly unfair to small market clubs.

My plan is to give each team the power to "franchise" one player on their team in an offseason who is about to enter free agency by offering them arbitration which they must accept. A team has to apply the franchise tag during the 5 day period in between the end of the World Series and the offseason. The player must also have played for the franchising team for a set amount of years, maybe four or five. The franchised player's salary will be decided by an arbitration panel unless a deal is made between the franchised player and the team. The penalty for franchising a player would be a loss of a first round draft pick. The franchise player would also have special benefits like a Rule 5 player, as he cannot be removed off of the teams 25 man roster. If he is removed for any reason (except for like injury or rehab assignments), any team can claim him. The franchised pick can not be traded on the years that he is franchised.

So for example, let's say that the franchise ability was able to be used this offseason and that Boston decided to use it on Papelbon, as he would qualify because he played for the Red Sox for a long time. Papelbon would not be able to enter free agency and must accept arbitration. The Red Sox would lose their first round pick just like they would if they signed a Type A free agent under the current system, but they would retain Papelbon for the year. Papelbon could not be traded during the current season and could not be sent down to the minors unless no one else claimed him.

A team like the Giants could not use the franchise tag on Carlos Beltran because he has not played long enough with the Giants. They could still resign him as a free agent if they wanted to keep him.

Another example would be the White Sox and Mark Buehrle. The White Sox would not want to lose a draft pick to keep Mark because their pitching rotation was good without him and he would cost more than what they would be willing to pay. Buehrle would not be franchised and he would enter free agency like normal.

Currently watching the 1986 WS game 6 which i got on dvd, so this brings me to a question... What is the best game you have ever seen in real time or watched taped version of? The aaron boone game in 2003 i find the best game of all time, the fact its game 7 of the Alcs, red sox- yankees fighting for elimination. Not just that, but it was a see-saw game ending with one of the most memorable moments in baseball history. Your favorite game?

Rays/Yanks on the last day last season or Game 6 of the WS of last season are easily the best games i've watched on live TV.

Yeah the rays game i would say was a close second. I almost had a heart attack when they got 7 runs starting in the 8th and dan johnson hit the 2 out 2 strike homer that was fair by 2 feet.

I'm a Tigers fan, and a relatively new baseball fan, so I haven't seen much... The best game I watched was the Verlander vs Weaver affair on the trade deadline. There was so much controversy after the game, I still can't believe to this day that the four lettered network didn't make this Sunday Night Baseball.

My ex went to the game, you meant the one will guillen showing off then weaver going apeshit? It was a good game, but i wouldnt say the best all time.

Aamto, I bet you love rewatching the Buckner game... As a Red Sox fan, that game broke my heart into tiny little pieces which was then crushed into even smaller pieces.

My favorite game that I saw live was Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS. I cry every time I see "The Walk" or "The Steal".

My non-Bosox game would have to be the Roy Holliday ALDS no-no. That my friends was pure magic.

Lol it was me, i wasnt old enough to watch the 86 game live but my parents say they skipped work the next day to stay up and watch it.
Behind the bag, it gets through bucker! Ray Knight around third and the Mets win it!

Like I said... I haven't seen many legendary games live... The furthest back I can actually remember watching baseball was like the 2003 World Series... and rooting for the Marlins to beat the Yankees.
