Reports are that oakland is shipping Rookie of the year closer Andrew Bailey and outfielder ryan sweeney to boston for josh reddick(sp?) and some prospects. From one quality closer to another, boston has now added another right handed fireballer to their rotation. Thoughts on this deal?

This trade seems to me like a straight up steal to me. I mean, the Red Sox gain one of the best closers in baseball for Josh Reddick and two high rated single A prospects. Heck,to make up for taking our "superstar" Josh Reddick, the A's give us one of their own outfielders in Ryan Sweeney to fill in. I know Billy wants to trade his guys now so the A's can be good when they move, but I'm thinking he could have gotten more than what he asked for.

The Red Sox are totally unharmed by this trade. Josh Reddick never was part of any future plans with us as Ryan Kalish is a better defensive and offensive rightfielder than Reddick. The only reason why Reddick got any playing time was because he was the most expendible guy to put on the bench until Carl Crawford got back. The thing is, he got hot for a bit began a sharp regression. Sweeney seems to be better than Reddick as a platoon option in right with Darnell McDonald anyways, as Sweeney has the defensive skills and left handed bat to mix with McDonalds speed and right handed bat. Not to mention, we also have utility man Mike Aviles and Ryan Kalish in AAA to fill in in case of a bust or injuries.

This really helps the Red Sox bullpen, as it saves them a ton of money on a guy like Madson. Heck, Madson might still come to the Red Sox on a low contract now that Boras does not have any leverage and the closer market is shot to hell. Anyways, lets see where the Sox stand right now...

The Sox still need rotation depth (Maholm, Oswalt, Wakefield, Kazmir, Sheets), and a solid everyday right handed right fielder (Cody Ross?). Other than that, this is one hell of a team that has a lot of talent. Hopefully Bobby V can get this team some work ethic and some team unity/moral and we are destined for greatness.

Agreed, billy is dealing his players like cards, shame they have no money to keep even a 5 million$ player. Buttered the RS need a pitcher that can eat up innings possibly in the #4 or 5 spot, as all of the pitchers you mentioned already have their spot reserved on the DL. I want to see if bailey will choke under the 30,000+ crowds. I am reminded of how A-Gon had to adapt last year but on the other side of the ball. Bailey was blessed with the most pitcher friendly ballpark in the MLB with there being 15 feet of extra foul territory and a gargantuan outfield, the ajustment of balls that would normally be on the warning track will now be 20 feet over the monster or 25 rows deep into the right field stands. I am not really impressed with his numbers. Never above 30 saves? The Al west is pretty much the least competitive division, but when he is moved into our 4 team pennant race he's going to have to step up his game. I disagree on moving bard to the rotation: its just like the feliz case, he may be developing a changeup but if he proves he's filthy in the 8th setting up for not will be bailey, why would they risk making his pitches slower and easier to hit? Bard throws 95-99 of a Chin-Ming-Wang type sinker, and coupled with bailey's location and presence I may have contention with you guys this year. Im hoping Andrew Bailey loves pitching to cano, his swing is fit perfect for a slider in to take advantage of Pesky's pole :)

Orb, I don't know what the hell you are talking about.

Andrew Bailey in his first two years had an Adjusted ERA+ of over 200. So, don't know where you are getting off that he won't pitch well at the Fens. He will pitch very very well. And the reason he did not get more than 30 saves because he never got over 30 save opportunities...

Secondly, playing for Boston is going to be a dream come true for Bailey because he grew up and still lives in the New England area. He is not a shy guy, and handles pressures pretty dang well from what I have seen. He has done comercials and interviews and does not seem like the quiet type that can't handle the media. He also has a strong connection to Bobby V, so Bobby will help him with the ropes as well. I also think Bailey knows how to play cribbage, so that makes him and Pedroia friends from the get go.

Thirdly, Robinson Cano has went only 1 for 6 against Bailey in his career with that one hit being a single. So, I don't know where you are getting that off of. Actually, the entire Yankee team only has a .143 average against Bailey.

We'll see during this season. Cano's swing is tailor made for Fenway(I believe you would know), and coupled with bailey's not overpowering, but cut movement on his slider(obviously) and fastball will make right field very dangerous for the redsox. When cano hits it to right he hooks it meaning near the foulpole. You can breathe the ball out of right in fenway, so I see him on a tear. Dont believe me, but we will see when the time comes. Uncharted waters for him, we dont know how he will do.

The chances of wrapping around that poll is slim to none considering you need to keep it fair and keep it perfectly on the line. No one aims for the poll, because it very rarely accounts in a home run. I left handed pull power hitter like Cano would be more likely to swing for the bullpen area in right which is 380 ft away instead of hitting a chip shot around the poll...

Thread dying. Big Z and cash is going to the marlins in trade for chris volstad. I think with ozzie and the latin community carlos will no longer have the temper he showed in chicago, dealing with managers that do not know how to act with him. On the other hand chicago is paying most of his contract to get him out. IMO good trade for both.

Looks like Posada is retiring after 17 seasons. I'm not a Yankee fan, but it's sad to see a classy guy like him leave. I wish him the best in the future. Does anyone think that he might return to the Yankees as a coach?

i dont know man. Having 2 mentally insane people on a team doesn't sound like a good idea.

Though i bet more people will come to their home games now.

You actually have 4 if you count Han-Ram and the closer formally known as Leo Nunez.

However, that is still 21 off of the record set by the 2004 Red Sox...

Lol'ed. And it is sad to see posada go, he over the years was one of the leaders of our club along with mariano, jeter, and pettite. Zambrano isnt mentally insane, just quade and pinella didnt know how to handle him. Having ozzie who is just as firey is going to be good.

That's a shame. I think he still has some baseball left in him, surely there aren't 30 better catchers than Posada. But I guess it's good to go out on your own accord instead of burning out. One of the few good players the Yankees have developed on their own in the last 2 decades, so I gotta have respect for him.

Probably HoF candidate

Posada is indeed a good player. No doubt about that. He has been a solid figure in the Yankee lineup since 1998, and I hate him for that, but I've always respected him for that. He was a well thought of player in baseball up until last year, as his handling of being benched was pathetic. He has indeed been a great player, but is he truely a hall of fame catcher?

I personally don't think he is. In 17 seasons, he has only has 5 all star appearances, a career average of only .273, 275 career home runs, 1065 RBIs, and 1664 hits. His defense and game calling was nothing to write home about, so he doesn't have that really going for him. He's definatly an above average catcher, but he should not be in the Hall of Fame. He is not on the level of all time greats like Fisk, Berra, Bench, Campanella, and Josh Gibson. Guys like Pudge and Mike Piazza are way better represenitaves of a hall of fame catcher than Posada.

He came up in 96 I think. Even though he wasnt a hall of famer, he still was a staple in the lineup representing the yankees along with jeter, bernie, mariano and pettite.

@the sentiment that people think Jorge can still catch.

Dear lord, he cannot sit behind the plate at all. His bat still has some value as a hitter, but he has no defensive value, nor does he have any value as a baserunner. Even if he wasn't retiring, there'd be no place on the Yankees for him, and he'd have trouble finding a spot on any team, really...

I'm also a firm believer that he should not step anywhere near the Hall of Fame. He was a good player who had a good career, but for people to be blinded by the fact that he was on the Yankees dynasty as the singular reason for someone with his abilities and results to be considered Hall of Fame.. ugh.

Adding another topic to the conversation, the Cubs still have not given the Red Sox any compensation yet for Theo Epstein. It seems like the Red Sox are getting screwed for letting Theo leave. I mean, MLB was supposed to step in in November but didn't, then they said it would be settled durring the Winter Meetings, then it was after the Rule 5 draft, and then it was after the holidays...

I mean for shit sakes, we were promised something and we are getting nothing. I'm thinking the Red Sox FO needs to grow some brains, as they should have not let Theo out of his contract until the compensation was decided.

Barry Larkin was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame today as the years lone inductee. He is a well deserving candidate, and I'm glad that he was chosen over bumbs like Bernie Williams.

That's kind of cool when the guys you first saw play when you were young start to go into the hall. Before long, Pedro will be giving his acceptance speech. Where do the years go?

I'm really mad Jeff Bagwell didn't get in, he was still crushing even in the steroid era, is the only first basemen with 400 HRs and 200 steals, oh and he was never suspected of juicing. Ever. He's going to get in very soon but he should have been elected. Larkin was a great candidate though, glad to see him get his due.

Next year should be fun with: Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens, Mike Piazza, Craig Biggio, and Curt Schilling (among the people already on the ballot). Out of those I'd vote for the last three, fuck Bonds, Sosa, and Clemens. They tainted the game forever by juicing, no matter if "everyone" was doing it. "Babe Ruth did it with hot dogs and beer".

Jack Morris to the HOF. I'll need to research him.

Tigers in serious talks with the Cubbies for Garza... *goosebumps* That'd be a rotation for the ages.

Anyone who argues Jack Morris in the Hall of Fame is like "OMG GAME 7". Arguing for him based on this fact would be similar to arguing for Don Larsen (this is obviously an exaggeration)

The best thing I've heard on this subject - Bob McCowan, a Toronto radio show host, was talking that Morris pitched to how much run support he had. He only gave his full effort if he needed to, which is why his ERA is so high. Clearly, this is a thought that no one has ever considered in anyone's life span, and should revolutionize how we look at pitchers who are incapable of mastering this skill.

I wouldn't be too excited when you see what you are giving up for at best a middle of the road #2 starter. Looking back on things 2 years down the road, you would have probably been more content with signing Paul Maholm and keeping your future in Turner. He's not worth what they are asking. It's pretty much robbery.

Also, even with the trade the Tigers would still not be on the level of the Giants, Phillies, Rays, Angels, or Marlins. I wouldn't consider that to be history in the making...

You'll be waiting a few years, I think he retired in 2010? Thats 3 more years. I can't wait to see the 3 steroid players and 3 HOF worthy players all being eligible next year.
