Monotype Core Laddering Challenge Season 2 Cycle 3
2 Cores, November 5 - November 19

Bug

Araquanid + Vikavolt
Tag : CCS2Bg3
Hall of Fame Rankings:

Platinum: 1600+
Gold: 1450+
Silver: 1325+
Bronze: 1250+
Araquanid - A new face to the monotype competitive scene. Araquanid turned eyes at first with the sight of its powerful ability in Water bubble, making it sound like it could be a great attacker. Unfortunately, it would not be an attacker but it still has some great niches on Bug teams. It is a good alternative to Galvantula for setting Sticky Webs, and also takes some hits from fire-types like Victini because of its ability allowing it to resist fire even more. Recently, it is even possible to use it as a trapper by using Spider Web and Soak but regardless, it has earned its way to be a useful pokemon in Bug.
Vikavolt - While this Pokemon may be unranked on the Viability Rankings, its niche is not completely useless. With an impressive special attack stat and decent STAB moves, Vikavolt can be a great sweeper against water teams and flying teams which are matchups that Bug can struggle in.

Psychic

Gardevoir-Mega + Gallade
Tag: CCS2Ps3
Hall of Fame Rankings:

Platinum: 1600+
Gold: 1450+
Silver: 1325+
Bronze: 1200+
Mega-Gardevoir - One of the most overlooked Mega's on Psychic, Mega Gardevoir can serve to be immensely useful in the Dark matchup where Psychic teams tend to struggle to beat Mega-Sableye easily. It's also an extremely powerful special attacker with access to Hyper Voice to go through Substitutes, along with its Pixalate ability making it an even more powerful STAB move.
Gallade - Non-mega Gallade can be run on Psychic teams to act as a more instant form of fighting coverage. Allowing Gallade to gain a Choice band allows it to threaten more walls immediately, like Mandibuzz and Skarmory. This also allows another mega to be run, as you can clearly see.

Note: This project is now lead by Namranan and cohosted by Perish Song. So now all questions and suggestions regarding to CLC should be directed towards us now and not Illama, the former leader.

To register to participate in a core challenge, you must reply to this forum with the proper information to be eligible! See the example post below for details. This also applies for submitting peaks (with that said please keep all of your information onto 1 post)! Otherwise, refer to the Index Thread for the official rules and info on this project. Please make sure to post replays of your Hall of Fame Rankings, failure to do so will result in your post being ignored.

In order to win this challenge, one player must obtain the highest ladder peak with the given core. In order to be eligible for winning the challenge you have to either post a replay of your peak (Highest elo reached) or take a screenshot of your accounts highest rank on ladder. The person with the highest rank at the end of the week is the winner of the challenge and will get posted in a new hall of fame in the Index thread along with the team they were using. If you win, please PM the team to Perishing Song or Namranan along with a brief description of the team and how you got the elo you got to. (Replays are much appreciated)

Remember to keep track of your Win/Loss ratio because the person with the best ratio out of 30 games can get a shoutout after the challenge has ended. To submit your Win/Loss ratio just take a screenshot of your record and post it in your registration. The team with the best record will be added to its own Hall of Fame.

Have Fun!

this is like playing with 5 mons.

vikavolt is literally a sac and that's the reason that it's better than straight up running 5 mons. it is not only slow under webs, it hits like a wet noodle when it cannot use a super effective stab move, and it sometimes fails to operate well when you can use your specs super effective stab move and the thing takes like 75.

i wonder if it'd be against the rules to have a flying/fairy core challenge that consists of (meta mon here, e.g. landot mdiancie) and "Nothing". what would happen? would it let people climb higher than this? i bet it would! i bet people would enjoy the novelty of gimping themselves more than gimping themselves in a more abstract sense by running an unmon in slot 6.

on the bright side, araquanid is neat.

Monotype Core Laddering Challenge Season 2 Cycle 3
2 Cores, November 12 - November 26

Fairy

Ribombee + Tapu Fini
Tag : CCS2Fa3
Hall of Fame Rankings:

Platinum: 1600+
Gold: 1450+
Silver: 1325+
Bronze: 1250+
Ribombee - A rather niche Pokemon when it comes to fairy. Ribombee's ability to set Sticky Webs and become a potential win condition with Quiver Dance is undeniably a nifty niche for Fairy to have. Sticky Web support from this pokemon allows many of Fairy's other mons to outspeed things that were once checks to it, one example being Tapu Koko being able to outspeed Choice Scarf Greninja. With other support moves at its disposal as well, there are plenty of sets to try on this niche pokemon.
Tapu Fini - This Tapu is often overlooked because of how Azumarill is a much better abuser of its STAB moves, and how Primarina is a better Special Attacker. However, Tapu Fini is able to become a bulkier of Primiarina that can reliably check certain Pokemon and take advantage of Ribombee's Sticky webs to outspeed Pokemon that would normally check it. Fini's movepool is certainly not lacking, and also has access to Calm Mind, which can allow it to become a potentially dangerous threat to opposing teams. Misty terrain is also very helpful for Fairy as it can negate Toxic spikes and other forms of status, which can take pressure off of Mega-Diancie and allow certain teammates to not worry about getting chipped.

Normal

Mega-Pidgeot + Bewear
Tag: CCS2No3
Hall of Fame Rankings:

Platinum: 1600+
Gold: 1450+
Silver: 1325+
Bronze: 1200+
Mega Pidgeot - While most see Mega-Pidgeot as the inferior mega for normal in almost every way, Mega-Pidgeot actually has quite a few things that gives it an edge over Lopunny. Being able to pivot with U-turn, not having to worry about getting burned, and being a good immunity to Spikes and Toxic Spikes allows Mega Pidgeot to do well on balance normal as well as Hyper Offensive normal.
Bewear - Normally seen on Hyper Offensive Normal, Bewear is still a decent pokemon on balance as well. While it is almost completely outclassed by Diggersby, its abiility in Fluffy allows it to check some Pokemon that Diggersby couldn't reliably. Azumarill and Mega Scizor are good examples. Like Diggersby, it can also run Choice Band and Swords Dance sets, however the lack of a good priority move makes it lack slightly when it comes to revenge killing. Despite all of its flaws, Bewear can still be used effectively as an alternative to Diggersby in order to maintain fighting-type STAB moves if you run Mega-Pidgeot.

Monotype Core Laddering Challenge Season 2 Cycle 3
2 Cores, November 19 - December 3

Electric

Galvantula + Xurkitree
Tag : CCS2El3
Hall of Fame Rankings:

Platinum: 1600+
Gold: 1450+
Silver: 1325+
Bronze: 1250+
Galvantula - Galvantula has a unique niche on electric in the form of providing Sticky Webs. This allows you to run more offensive Pokemon and not have to worry as much about speed control. Pokemon like Tapu Koko can run Choice specs to take advantage of this as well. Galvantula also hits pretty hard on its own with electric terrain boosted thunder's, and also often runs energy ball and Hidden Power ice to help deal with Water-grounds and Dragons respectively. This coverage is appreciated by the team, and makes Galvantula a solid niche pokemon to use.
Xurkitree - Xurkitree on its debut was clamored about because of its absurdly high Special Attack Stat. While its speed leaves much to be desired, its raw power and sweep potential with Beast Boost allows it to effectively be a more niche option on Electric teams. It often runs a choice scarf or Psychium Z with Hypnosis to help with its speed problem and still take advantage of that incredibly high Special Attack. With Galvantula, Xurkitree doesn't need to run a choice scarf, so it opens up more options.

Ice

Piloswine + Rotom-Frost
Tag: CCS2Ic3
Hall of Fame Rankings:

Platinum: 1550+
Gold: 1425+
Silver: 1300+
Bronze: 1200+
Piloswine - Piloswine is a great pokemon on ice because of its amazing bulk with eviolite and ability to always set up rocks and be a soft check to some fire types. There isn't a whole lot to say about the Pokemon itself, but it allows you to run Balanced or Bulky Offense Ice teams that can take advantage of its ability to keep setting up rocks and check incoming sweepers.
Rotom-Frost - Rotom-Frost is a niche Scizor-check that also role compresses Hazard Removal. While it does check non-superpower variants of scizor thanks to its typing and bulk it can also help against other steel types like Ferrothorn. With Volt switch, Rotom-Frost can also be a good slow pivot that allows you to switch into walls and revenge killers easier, making it a great niche pokemon for Ice-type teams.

My thoughts on the cores

Electric

Honestly, Xurkitree is pretty bad. While it can decimate stall, against offensive teams it really struggles due to its underwhelming Speed. If it had 103 base Speed (could lose 10 in each defence stat to compensate) it would be great, but alas it's just too slow and too frail. While Sticky Web does mitigate this to an extent, there are plenty of airborne Pokemon that are faster like Charizard Y, Aerodactyl, Landorus etc. Galvantula was underwhelming too, as on Bug its big USP is being able to set Sticky Web and beat most common Defoggers. But Electric already beats most of those Pokemon anyway.

Ice

I was pleasantly surprised by both mons. Piloswine is a great emergency check to the likes of Volcarona, Charziard X and Blacephalon, which normally have no trouble sweeping an Ice team. It's also an extremely consistent Stealth Rock setter, as it almost always got the Rocks up. Ice teams also beat most Defoggers, which is handy. Rotom-F was a great check to offensive Steel types like Scizor and Sand Rush Excadrill. I used a spread with enough Speed to outrun Adamant Mega Scizor, with max HP and the rest in Defence and the moves Volt Switch, Blizzard, Will-O-Wisp and Defog.[/HIDE]

Edit: I stupidly forgot to put the S in my alts, so had to ladder again. Kept running into Steel teams with Ice, which was incredibly frustrating. Fuck you Mega Scizor.
