Monotype Core Laddering Challenge Season 2 Cycle 3
2 Cores, November 26 - December 10

Fire

Volcanion + Rotom-Heat
Tag : CCS2Fi3
Hall of Fame Rankings:

Platinum: 1550+
Gold: 1450+
Silver: 1325+
Bronze: 1225+
Volcanion - Volcanion is a niche pokemon to use on Fire because of its nifty water immunity and ability to take advantage of sun and its high special attack to act as an effective Azumarill check and Solar Beam user. This pokemon's movepool has quite a good amount of options in Earth power, Sludge Wave, Solar Beam, etc. While one may think that it should use its Water-STAB move in steam eruption more, it is unfortunately weakened by the sun that fire teams love to abuse, so it can find itself not using it sometimes, although it can still use it regardless. One may be curious as to why volcanion isn't used more on fire for these reasons, and unfrotunately it is because of its slow speed and ability to get worn down by Stealth Rocks relatively easily, not to mention that it gets forced out easily as well. Running volcanion also means not using volcarona or blacephelon, who are amazing special sweepers that can blast through balance teams better than volcanion can. Overall Volcanion is a niche pokemon to use on fire, but its niche is quite useful and can be very important to winning some key matches.
Rotom-Heat - Rotom-heat used to be used for primarily screens on fire teams. Thanks to USUM, it gained defog, which made it incredibly useful as both a hazard remover and a screen setter, while also being a decent pivot with volt switch. This pokemon has a lot of going for it and can immensely support its teammates thanks to screens and defog. It can also be run offensively or have an extremely niche trick set that allows it to cripple common checks like chansey. Overall, rotom-heat is always a great addition to have on a fire team, using it wisely can make fire seem hard to beat.

Fighting

Infernape + Breloom
Tag: CCS2Fg3
Hall of Fame Rankings:

Platinum: 1550+
Gold: 1425+
Silver: 1300+
Bronze: 1200+
Infernape - Infernape is unfortunately generally outclassed by Cobalion as an offnensive lead, and by Keldeo and Terrakion as speed control. However this doesn't stop infernape from having a few nifty niches. As a lead, it can use endeavor + mach punch to weaken opposing leads or defensive pokemon, and use taunt to prevent them from setting rocks, taunting back, or recovering health. This niche set can be very effective against some more offensive teams, however this is not the only thing infernape can do. Infernape still has a great speed tier and a nice STAB combination along with a decent movepool. This allows it to sometimes get away with running a choice scarf set when Keldeo is using a Z-move or if Kommo-o is not being used. These niches allow infernape to still have a solid presence in the fighting metagame.
Breloom - Breloom has fallen off from its former glory in recent times, but it is still a nasty Pokemon that can potentially be a win condition thanks to Spore and its technician boosted STAB moves in Bullet Seed and Mach Punch. It can also opt to use a substitute and Toxic Orb set to take advantage of more passive walls like celesteela and Toxapex, and threaten them just as bad. This also allows you to have a status absorber akin to the likes of gliscor. Breloom in general is still a solid choice for fighting teams, despite it having less viability as time has gone on.

Note: This project is now lead by Namranan and cohosted by Perish Song. So now all questions and suggestions regarding to CLC should be directed towards us now and not Illama, the former leader.

To register to participate in a core challenge, you must reply to this forum with the proper information to be eligible! See the example post below for details. This also applies for submitting peaks (with that said please keep all of your information onto 1 post)! Otherwise, refer to the Index Thread for the official rules and info on this project. Please make sure to post replays of your Hall of Fame Rankings, failure to do so will result in your post being ignored.

In order to win this challenge, one player must obtain the highest ladder peak with the given core. In order to be eligible for winning the challenge you have to either post a replay of your peak (Highest elo reached) or take a screenshot of your accounts highest rank on ladder. The person with the highest rank at the end of the week is the winner of the challenge and will get posted in a new hall of fame in the Index thread along with the team they were using. If you win, please PM the team to Perishing Song or Namranan along with a brief description of the team and how you got the elo you got to. (Replays are much appreciated)

Remember to keep track of your Win/Loss ratio because the person with the best ratio out of 30 games can get a shoutout after the challenge has ended. To submit your Win/Loss ratio just take a screenshot of your record and post it in your registration. The team with the best record will be added to its own Hall of Fame.

Have Fun!

Thoughts on the cores:

Volcanion is actually pretty solid - great check to Water types, and it helps out somewhat in the Ground matchup too. Rotom-H, I didn't really like tbh - setting up the Screens was much harder than you might think, it's extremely passive, and Ground types stop it dead. Breloom is honestly pretty mediocre - it can wreck Water stall, which can be a hard matchup for Fighting, but other than that it doesn't do much. Wasn't too impressed with Infernape either - shame as it's really good on Fire. But it's just so frail and doesn't hit hard enough. I used it as a suicide lead, and it was OK, nothing spectacular.

My opinion about fighting core: It isn't bad, but this type just sucks, you can't play one match without being totally countered by just ONE mon, no matter what you do, one Pokémon will always sweep your team and I can list one for each type. If you don't win the speed tie vs galvantula, you auto lose, there is no good Fighting Pokémon with a nice coverage for psychic, you also just lose to Lati@s. My peak is 1548, can't go higher than that, ladder is full of unexpected trash sets. The core is nice, unfort I can't say the same about the type.

Monotype Core Laddering Challenge Season 2 Cycle 3
2 Cores, December 3 - December 17

Steel

Stakataka + Jirachi
Tag : CCS2St3
Hall of Fame Rankings:

Platinum: 1600+
Gold: 1450+
Silver: 1350+
Bronze: 1200+
Stakataka - Stakataka is a rather niche mon on Steel teams for its ability to become a deadly lategame sweeper with its Offensive Trick Room set. It doesn't even need to be on a full Trick Room team in order to pull this off either, as Trick does not last that long and other common Pokemon on Steel can still utilize it somewhat. Stakataka's typing and high defenses and bulk can sometimes allow it to find oppurtunites to set up Trick Room, While its Steel-Rock typing is poor defensively, offensively it gives Stakataka very good coverage against a large portion of the metagame, allowing it to hit almost every single Pokemon in the meta very hard.
Jirachi - Jirachi is a great Pokemon on Steel and helps it out with some of its most problematic Matchups in water, Using a special oriented set, Jirachi can use moves like Thunderbolt and Psychic to wear down the defensive core of water and pressure all of its offensive pokemon with ease. There are plenty of ways to acheive this with Jirachi, as it can use a Z-move, Substitute, or even Calm Mind to accomplish this task. This allows it to fit on almost any team and make sure that it does not lose to water and poison.

Ground

Diggersby + Mamoswine
Tag: CCS2Gd3
Hall of Fame Rankings:

Platinum: 1600+
Gold: 1450+
Silver: 1350+
Bronze: 1200+
Diggersby - A rather uncommon Pokemon on Ground. You may know this thing from how effective it is as a wallbreaker on Normal Teams. Well it can do the same here, to varying levels of success. Diggersby is run the same way it normally is run on normal with options like Swords Dance Z-move or Choice Band sets. Huge Power still makes Diggersby a huge threat to certain teams, so dealing with threats like Mantine will no longer be an issue thanks to its great wallbreaking power.
Mamoswine - A rather nifty mon to put on a Ground team. Its ability to take Ice attacks and dish out some of its own is immensely useful for the type as it generally lacks that sort of coverage. It allows Ground teams to deal with Flying teams better and also have a good Wallbreaker and priority abuser, sound familiar? Working with another Wallbreaker gives Mamoswine the option to run a more niche Scarf set to surprise most of its usual checks, while still providing the great utility in being able to take ice attacks.

My thoughts on the cores.

Steel

Stakataka just plain sucks. Packing 4X weaknesses to Ground and Fighting is bad for Steel, as it already struggles with those types. It can do great work when if it gets to set up Trick Room, but finding space to do it is damn near impossible. I would not recommend using it ever. Jirachi on the other hand was a solid choice. SubCM is great for handling stally types like Grass and balanced Normal, but Scarf is solid too. Couldn't try Z Happy Hour as I had Suckataka using the Z crystal (without it Stone Edge is so shaky).

Congrats to Pepe Le Spew for winning the Steel Challenge! Unfortunately no one posted a peak for the Ground challenge :(

However Eviscerus won the Ground Win/Loss Ratio with an amazing 28/2 record. Pepe Le Spew also won the Win/Loss for Steel with a 27-3 win/loss ratio.

Also a big shoutout to our Platinum Rankers!

Monotype Core Laddering Challenge Season 2 Cycle 4
2 Standard Cores, January 7 - January 21
1 Super Core, January 7 - January 17 (Details in this post)

Psychic

Reuniclus + Celebi
Tag : CCS2Ps4
Hall of Fame Rankings:

Platinum: 1600+
Gold: 1450+
Silver: 1325+
Bronze: 1250+
Reuniclus - Reuniclus is no stranger to seeing competitive play in the general usage-based metagame. However it isn't seen as much in monotype due to its very lacking typing and somewhat niche role. That being said, this niche can still be very useful and effective if a team is built to support it. Reuniclus' main niche is being a great Magic Guard lategame sweeper, which allows it to stare most passive pokemon in the face and set up on them. Due to its high bulk and decent movepool, it can pull of this feat easily in theory. However it cannot be ignored that taunt and haze / phase are big detriments to its niche, especially mons like Mantine who outspeed Reun and can Haze it before it attacks with its boosts. Despite this weakness Reun can still pull of this niche even against some offensive teams, so be sure to use it wisely.
Celebi - Celebi is a great Pokemon on Psychic as it is decently versatile and able to cover most roles that need to be fulfilled for a team. Whether it has to be a dedicated answer to dealing with types like Water, Electric, and Steel, or if it has to be a defensive rocker, Celebi can do it and do it rather effectively. With a decent movepool and general 100 Base Stats across the board, can dish out damage with Nasty Plot + 3 attacks or take attacks with its average bulk and useful typing. Regardless of the team, Celebi will likely find a great way to fit into it.

Flying

Aerodactyl + Hawlucha
Tag: CCS2Fl4
Hall of Fame Rankings:

Platinum: 1600+
Gold: 1450+
Silver: 1325+
Bronze: 1250+
Aerodactyl - Aerodactyl became a relatively popular Pokemon on Flying teams when the USUM metagame began to settle. This mon was able to be a great offensive threat to Electric types and other threatening Pokemon to the type. It's ability to become an Offensive Stealth Rocker or an All out attacker allow it to threaten many teams, which immensely supports its fellow teammates regardless of the archetype its on. Aerodactyl-Mega is obviously the most popular way to use Aerodactyl, but as a mega-less suicide lead with a focus sash it can also do relatively well. The only other leads that outspeed it or tie is Tapu Koko and Deoxys-Speed, every other viable lead is outsped thanks to its still blistering 130 Speed stat. Mega or megaless, Aeroadactyl can be a great asset to any flying team of any archetype.
Hawlucha - A rather overlooked Pokemon for Flying teams due to its popularity on Fighting-type teams. However the set that works on those teams also works well on Flying teams. Hawlucha is one of the few Flying-type Pokemon that actually use their main STAB move, and because of this it can easily help Flying win MU's much easier than normal. Its additional Fighting typing and access to High Jump Kick also allows it to be able to hit Rock and Steel-types that Flying teams can sometimes struggle with. Despite its measly bulk and very bad defensive typing, Hawlucha can still be a great asset to teams that need a lategame sweeper that can consistantly do its job.

*New* SUPER CORE CHALLENGE *New*
As of Cycle 4 there will be a Super Core Challenge Held at the beginning and end of every cycle. These challenges will require you to reach a peak elo of 1650+ with two very niche or underused Pokemon in less the time of a normal cycle. These pokemon may not work well together some times, but that makes the challenge even more exciting! The winner of this core (the first person to post a replay of them reaching this peak with this core) will get 5 additional points for the Cycle rankings. Have Fun!

This weeks super core is:
STEEL

Empoleon + Bronzong!
Tag: CCS2St4S

Peak needed to win: 1650+

That being said, if you win the challenge you must PM Namranan or Perishing Song your team with a brief description of how it works. If you do this even without winning you will still have your team posted in an honorable mentions section. You get 1 extra point this cycle if you submit your team.

Have Fun!
