In that case, ban all weather inducers, because they regularly force you to carry your own weather in order to beat them in this fast generation.

Some people mention it being a quick ticket for less skilled people beating more skilled people.

However, I argue that these so called less skilled people are taking advantage of an ucommon strategy, and ACTUALLY making it work. Stop calling them nobs, and man up and accept Inconsistent demands certain specific things.
I've beaten many, many weather teams without a weather setter of my own (Stall says hi). The difference between weather setters and Inconsistent is that the former is much less centralizing than the latter. You *could* use a weather setter, but that's optional. With Inconsistent, if you don't run a very specific type of counter for 2 (TWO) Pokemon, you're screwed 99% of the time.

Also, this is no longer an uncommon strategy, since everyone and their mom is running Octillery now. I wouldn't go so far as to call them noobs, since I generally dislike that term, but the fact that they're making the metagame more luck-based is not fun for anyone but them. And I think that's the main reason so many people are complaining. Who wants to play in a metagame where luck has an overwhelming part in deciding whether or not you win?

Notice how the battle is a ladder match - Species Clause was on, so I could only use one Bidoof (in this case, a Rollout Bidoof).

Inconsistent may be, well, inconsistent, but if you get lucky (evasion boost on the first turn in this instance) and the opponent doesn't have any solid counters, it's extremely difficult to stop.

You probably already know that; I just wanted an excuse to post a log of Bidoof soloing a team :P

People are saying that using Inconsistent removes elements of strategy and replaces them with luck.

And if people were winning by just sending out anything with Inconsistent and hoping for the best, I might be inclined to believe that.

But I'm hearing about stuff like Protect/Substitute stalling to get a few boosts safely, Baton Passing Ingrain with and the Inconsistent boosts with Smeargle, and generally just building Inconsistent users into dedicated stallers, built around waiting out the effect.

How is that not strategy? Sometimes they'll get lucky and their ability will change up their stats sooner. Just like sometimes you'll get lucky with Boil Over and cause a burn. Or sometimes you'll get lucky with Focus Blast and hit. Etc.

I say that the real source of strategic laziness is those who wish to simply ban the ability outright without even trying to play around it. These people are "noobs" who don't know how to play the game well?

Prove it! Outplay them! Mischievous Heart Whirlwind/Roar or Worry Seed! Slap them with Mist/Clear Smog/Foresight to destroy their stat boosts!

Stop being so goddamned afraid of Inconsistent and prove that you're the better player. A single well-placed move can destroy the entire strategy. You just need to think.

Your calling other people noobs yet you don't know that Mischeivous heart won't give Roar/Whirlwind priority over normal moves. There isnt any strategy in just using protect and substitute hoping for an evasion boost or a speed boost. Its not about trying to play aaround this its the fact that it introduces so much luck into the game not just with which boosts you get but also whether or not you hit them. Theres a reason that we ban evasion boosting moves and its the same reason we should ban this, after one turn of setup you can luck your way through the rest of the game.

Even after using Clear Fog/Foresight/Haze (lol Mist?), the Inconsistent user has a 23.8% chance of getting a +2 in Speed or Evasion by the end of the turn.

Yay?

Sorry, meant Haze.

Foresight would make those Evasion boosts worthless. Look up the move.

And Clear Smog has never-miss accuracy and removes the boosts through Substitute. And if you give it a few PP up, it can be used more times than Protect and Substitute combined.

Alternatively, just have an Erufun hit them with Worry Seed. Or even have a guy with Skill Swap (that one isn't based on accuracy), and get them after their first Protect.

Oh, and I admit I got a little carried away when I mentioned Roar/Whirlwind. And I wasn't accusing anyone of being a "noob", I was accusing some folks of being intellectually lazy and calling other people "noob"s.

As for people lucking their way through the game, I submit that it's pretty hard to do that when a person who took the time to think of a counter can wreck the whole thing with one move.

There is the whole thing that you could use a pokemon with Unaware but I still think it might be unfair to have to put a pokemon on your team to counter one specific strategy that otherwise causes so much destruction if you don't have a specific counter for it. Too bad it does it with Evasion otherwise it might not be considered for banning.

Kind of like needing Rapid Spinners.
Yeah you have a point about that. But most of the time entry hazards just add to damage and they are far from considered "unstoppable" either. You might have to have a Pokemon with Rapid Spin to stop hazards but thats only if a hazard is very damaging to your specific team. Teams can get along fine without Rapid Spinners and the whole idea of this is whether a team that doesn't have a counter can handle it. And right now the answer seems to be no.

I thought the idea of much of the metagame is that you had to have certain things in your team that counter the popular stuff. I've run all ice teams for the fun of it(not on Shoddy, but against other people using standard rules), and Stealth Rock/Scizor wreak me. So your argument that something is broken if a person who doesn't have a counter can't handle it is interesting. Using that logic I can say Stealth Rock and Scizor are broken because I really don't have an answer to them beyond playing something non-ice(which, then there start to be counters). If you're going to ban stuff from the metagame based on whether you have to run a counter against it or not, there should be a lot more that's banned imho..

Thats not necessarily what I meant. You have the option to counter those things and there are more than a few counters for both. The only reason the Smogon is considering banning this is because of the Evasion idea and that Evasion make the game boil down to luck when people misuse it. I personally have to have it used against me before I can have a real opinion whether it should be banned or not but based on what has been shown so far it might be banned. If evasion wasn't a factor they might not be banning it idk.

Protect makes foresight worthless if i am not horribly wrong and since every Inconsistent user runs it to stall more turns it won't help much ;)

Yeah that's what I would've thought, but I guess I didn't hear any discussion on it actually being banned. With that being said, there's a history of leaving luck-based things unbanned if the likelihood that they proc is small.

Let's pretend for a moment that there was no chance of an evasion modifier. What could counter it immediately? Now, if you take one of those pokemon and slapped a Wide Lens onto it, what are the chances you're going to miss with whatever you're doing?(taking into account the chances that the first stat increase is an evasion modifier, as well as the chances that whatever moves you'd use would miss with a Wide Lens).

If the answer is similar to the evasion precedent set in the past by Smogon, there's a good argument to ban. However, given you get 1 chance out of 7 stats before that counter rolls out, I'm not sure it's as likely(admitting I could be wrong here). This method is what I would use in deciding whether to ban anything luck-based or not(as well as decides what constitutes an acceptable amount of luck).

My point was that, even if you do use those moves, there's a rather significant chance Octillery/Bibarel will get a boost in the stat they want, so the cycle starts again right after you Haze/Foresight them (and with Foresight it's worse because it doesn't lose any boost it has besides Evasion so you still have unbreakable Substitutes and may risk getting swept by rofl +6 Struggle like Bologo).

You do know that Clear Smog is a damaging move, right? You're hurting their substitute at the same time

With an unSTAB Poison-type 50 BP move.

Yeah.

And with "unbreakable", you know what I meant. If you use Foresight, any other boost will be kept, so if they have +x Def/SDef, you're still screwed.

UnSTAB?

I don't think we're talking about the same Clear Smog users. I was talking about the pokéball mushroom, or perhaps Gengar. Both of those are Poison type.

And the mushroom resists water and has a supereffective STAB move on Octillery/Bibarrel.

edit: why in the world are the quote boxes preceding everyone's name with "fat"?

Gengar would get ko'd before it could do anything.
The mushroom may resist water, but once glalie comes out... or even if octillery choses to run ice beam (if it becomes a common counter then it probably will).

I don't think Inconsistent is a broken strategy. But Evasion and OHKO's probably aren't either. We banned Evasion and OHKO's knowing they won't be broken just because they make the game more luck based. I don't see why we cannot make an Inconsistent Clause just like Soul Dew or Evasion Clause.

Comparing Inconsistent/Evasion to Flinchhax isn't valid. Flinchhax Jirachi isn't beating Heatran or Blissey any time soon. On the other hand, with Evasion/OHKO/Inconsistent if you lose the coin flip you basically lose the game unless you run really specialized counters.

Yeah, I haven't had to much of a chance to play around in the Gen V metagame, but the number of Octilleries I've seen around is really switching around my team building, whereas I was using Dragon Tail to phaze I'm definitely going to have to go back to Roar/Whirlwind/Haze because of the number of Substitute/Inconsistent users.

We've just gotten used to being lazy and banning stuff we don't like.
If they don't have counters we say they should be banned because they don't have counters.
If they do have counters we say it would be 'unfair' to *have* to use them in your team...lol

However, the no. 1 reason why you have higher chances of losing against an Inconsistent Pokemon if you dont have one yourself; is EVASION modifiers. You are helpless if they get +4 Evasion, and the shitty hax can down you in a matter of a few turns.
Though it's hilarious when they have +4 evasion, but -4 accuracy, doubly so if your trying to hit each other with a focus blast :P.

I've seen it happen, and I'm going to start running machamp. Not just because machamp can still hit you for lots and confuse you, but champ is just a generally good pokemon. Though I hadn't thought about worry seed as a way to nullify an ability.
