Nintendo 3DS Discussion Thread - Mark 2

1) It aesthetically... it doesn't compare with the DS Lite's smooth edges.
2) The battery life.
3) Its bulkiness/weight, plus it feels clumsy.
4) The 3D effects... it just hurts my eyes and I haven't used it since day 1.

I'm with McGrrr on everything there; the 3DS disappoints me compared to the previous models of DS. I can count the amount of times I've used it since I was given one as a birthday present in September 2011 on one hand.

Personally I'm more attached to the DSi XL model, as the bigger display compliments my terrible eyesight - something the 3DS simply cannot match.

A large model of the 3DS is coming out soon. You might want to look into trading your current 3DS in for that when it does, especially as more games are coming out towards the end of this year. I won't be purchasing one as discussed previously in this thread, but it would probably solve your problem.

I'm personally very happy with the original 3DS model. I think it looks sleek, stylish and feels quite nice. I like the 3D effect even though I often turn it off to play for longer. My only gripe is obviously the lack of games that I want to buy, I only have four and I'm pretty much bored of those already. I am very much looking forward to Paper Mario and Luigi's Mansion, but because I play Pokémon a lot, I tend to just play Black/White on there and will do the same with Black/White 2 when they're released.

Oh, and I do wish the second circle pad was built into the console obviously. But this will only likely give me a slight annoyance if Monster Hunter is released over here.

WayForward designer Matt Bozon said the team “decided that something like Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link was the common ground.”

He added:

“Because of this our top-view areas focus on quests and exploration, and the side view combines combat with platforming.”

I need to find a towel to clean up this sticky mess.

It even has hearts! It has freaking hearts!!

Holy jesus, Tales of the Abyss is so good. I got it around 10 days ago, and I've already put in 25 hours. I am loving everything about this game! The main character starts out as kind of a Tidus (you know what I'm talking about). All the characters, actually, are pretty generic at the start. After the super awesome secret plot twist, though, everyone starts to come into themselves. They all feel real, and you really begin to care about them.

Graphics are pretty good; not RE: Revelations good, but some of the locales look just fucking GORGEOUS (Baticul I'm looking at you). Also, after a good bit in the game more and more anime cut-scenes (since there is an anime based on the game) come into play and they just look great.

The battle system is VERY fun. It's almost like a 2D fighting game. You map spells to your stick + the spell button, as well as spells from other party members (for example, I have a healing spell from the healer of the party mapped to the touch screen. I tap it, she heals. Or a strong attack spell. Whatever.). Combat is very fast paced, very fun, very smooth. It flows really well. Boss fights are great, too. Extremely intense.

This game is great, coming from someone who has never liked a JRPG before. I know it's a little hard to find, but it is definitely worth it and the BEST RPG on the 3DS.

I got Tales of the Abyss a couple days ago too, and everything is pretty much the same compared to other Tales games. But that's a good thing, Tales is a classic series that should never be changed.

I've noticed how the story completely blows though, all this Fonon shit and Order of the Lorelei, they really didn't explain anything..

If you like this game so much, you could give Tales of Vesperia a shot, I personally find it the best Tales game I've played.

Tales of Vesperia is a weaker title in terms of story than Tales of the Abyss. If the plot is hazy, it's because you are still in the beginning. It gets fleshed out gradually over time and builds right up until the ending scene. Tales of Vesperia is a pretty game, but it builds up and then falls off a cliff abruptly. They easily could have added 20 hours to continue the momentum of the story. No doubt by the end of Abyss, you will see how much more fulfilling it is compared to Vesperia.

The story of Abyss picks up later on, particularly if you do all the sidequests. I found the same thing, and even though I predicted the first major twist concerning Luke, the middle part of the story was boring.

Considering picking up a 3DS soon, what would you guys say are some absolute must-have games that I should start off with?

Nintendo, please release this.

That throws me back to those clear-cased Nintendo 64 controllers with an extremely similar appearance. Nostalgia's a great experience.

From me (bearing in mind I don't play the 3DS often), the Ocarina of Time remake is an absolute must - it's a great recreation of a fantastic game which appeals to all. Other must-haves would include Super Mario 3D Land (a great 3D Mario platformer) and Mario Kart 7 (best Mario Kart they've released so far IMO)

Well I just got a 3DS I guess...my birthday is on Friday, so my dad surprised me with one tonight. Granted, he did all the wrong steps in buying it (he's under the odd delusion I like Gamestop, so he got it there with some sub game and some PowerUp Rewards Pro thing that is a waste since their magazine is bleh and I hate buying games from there. Not only that but Best Buy is offering it for $179 AND the new Kingdom Hearts game, which I would have preferred over a $10 shovelware title it looks like), but still I guess it's the thought that counts. Obviously I'm not about to tell him he's a noob for getting it at Gamestop, but meh...I know even writing this it sounds pretty ungrateful even to me, but I wish he'd think a bit more too...

Otherwise, I personally was going to be waiting to get the 3DS either when BW2 came out or (ideally if it ever came out) a FE edition one. So I guess I'll load up on the 3DS titles I've been missing out on this weekend, like New Super Mario Bros and such. Any other ones worth getting? Not gonna bother with remakes like Zelda, I have so many versions of OoT that it's boring to me by now.

awh i wish my dad would get me a 3ds! come on man that's very very cool to begin with, i am guessing that he doesn't play video games but he still went into gamestop to get his son a 3ds :) that's really sweet

anyway, Tales of the abyss if you crave an RPG, SM3DL for some platforming goodness with tons of collectables, resident evil: revelations for excellent survival horror, and there are tons of demos in the eshop for retail games.

I tried my friend's 3DS once. Once.

3D effects are not for people with bad eyesight. Plus, I really don't see why it matters to get a 3DS when the regular DSi works fine. If you're into 3D games, I guess, but otherwise you should just buy a DSi, which, in this day, is probably a lot cheaper.

I will despise the day that DSi's can no longer play the newer DS games.

;_; Why u do tis to me 3DS? I want adventure time too...

...you know there IS a 3D slider and you can turn the effect off?

The graphics are better and eventually, there won't be any new DS games. I seriously thought we were past the stage of "It's just a DS with a 3D option."

I will never understand why people hold on to a console when it's successor comes out, it was the same deal with the GBA. I get if you're just waiting to buy it later, but there are some people who actually think they'll keep making games for the older console. -_-

People who seriously enjoy handheld Nintendo games have bought the 3DS in anticipation of the games that have been released and will be released. I am half-blind and so I cannot see 3D effects at all; nonetheless, I bought a 3DS for OoT 3D, Kid Icarus (haven't gotten around to it yet though...), Animal Crossing 3DS, Luigi's Mansion 2, Paper Mario 3DS (pretty much the system's 'killer app' as far as I'm concerned...), as well as some third-party games like the sequel to 999. The gimmicks are all really irrelevant to me, though I think its a nice system. Things like those exist to better sell the updated console to people who aren't already huge fans, because the serious Nintendo fans will most likely buy them anyway if it's in their financial reach. 3D is probably cool for some of those fans too; I wouldn't know. I think cool tricks like the AR games are just that: cool; they would never sell a system to me. But the games would, because I love gaming.

The 3DS as such isn't a massive design upgrade, the way buying a DS when all you had was a GBA was, but that's why it matters (that and it's not an insignificant hardware upgrade anyway). Your last sentence even proves it. Everyone has their own reasons for making an acquisition, but I thought I'd explain my perspective since it doesn't seem to apply in your case.

Holiday season '12 will be brilliant. And while I wish I'd bought the 3DS after price reduction (mainly because I want a pink 3DS), I don't regret getting it before the 3DS XL. So I'll be really glad I already own a 3DS when those games arrive, since they're going to cost a lot of money. :(

Because it's like going from a GB > GBA or GBA > DS. It's not like you're upgrading to a newer iPhone or something.

The DS could do this:

It could not do this:

The 3DS is definitely not just a fancy DSI+ Its a completely new, more powerful system. In fact, as was pointed out in an article on n4g, the graphical and processing power leap between the DS and 3DS is greater than the leap between the GBA and the DS was.

yeah lol the 3DS is not the "new DSi but with 3D". it's an entirely new system. it's the DS to the GBA. it's the gameboy color to the gameboy. 3D is just an added "bonus". i never use it, it doesn't affect gameplay.

This comment makes 0 sense.

The DSi will always support DS games, and I expect the final DS game to be released around Q2 2013. The "newer" DS games are referred to as DSi enhanced games (HGSS, BW, BW2) and all of them are backwards compatible with even the original NDS.

I've seen so much confusion over DS/3DS, and also for the Wii/WiiU.

Almost everybody I know thinks the 3DS is just the next installment of the DS, similar to the DS Lite and DSi.
Also, everyone that knows about the WiiU thinks it's just some sort of attachment to the Wii that allows you to play games without the TV using some funky controller.

Nintendo shouldn't make the names of the new devices so similar to the ones previous...I'm getting tired of explaining how they aren't the same thing. -_-
