Played Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land today. They're awesome, but the action in Mario Kart made the 3D problematic.
since i intend to keep the 3D off that won't be much of a problem!

i've been wondering about the drifting in mk7; is it like mkds's (snaking) or mkwii's?

And how do the graphics compare to MKDS? I've screens that look good but nothing compares to the real thing. Also, how does it control? And if you played any hang glider / submarine levels (which i doubt, but one can hope), are they gimmicky?

It's "drift for a certain amount of time to get the boost," so MK Wii. no snaking on wifi, booyah

Also, has anyone tried Dream Trigger? It looked good cause it reminded me of Child of Eden/Rez.

they don't seem to be that gimmicky, they seem to offer alternate paths through a level or short sections on the main track.

you go back to racing your kart anyway so it shouldn't be too bad.

It's more similar to Mario Kart Wii. In general controls, power sliding, and graphic quality. Due to the smaller screen, and me seeing the game in motion, I would wager that the graphics on Mario Kart 3DS are as good as, if not better than the Wii version. The screen shots do it no justice at all.

The drifting is slightly different though. You need to push the control stick into the corner to be able to get a red boost at least, drifting round a corner for as long as you won't will not get you the best boost unless you force yourself into the corner more.

Definitely the best 3DS game I've played and I can't wait for it. Anyone who's itching to play it, you will not be disappointed. Same with Super Mario 3D Land - extremely good, but I didn't play that as much since the competition was Mario Kart only.

The levels on MK7 used the gliding and underwater. The gliding is brilliant, to be honest. The underwater was a bit difficult to control but once you get used to it, it's fine as well.

That's the first track and the one in which I had to get the fastest time possible (using only Mario in the standard kart). You can see which characters were available in the demo. The only items available were:

Red Shell
Green Shell & x3
Banana & x3
Mushroom & x3
Bombs
Squid Ink

There may have been triple Red Shells but I never saw any. This was just a basic demo though and due to no Blue Shells, Lightning etc it was more fair to get a fast time. The other two levels didn't count for fast times, but the second track had underwater areas and the third track was the Donkey Kong one.

I'm glad to see snaking go because the D-pad on my DS Lite is so screwed now from all the thumb-rocking.

Hey I hadn't seen those videos before, they must be new.

Not sure how I feel about N64 Luigi Raceway. I can't help but think it's gonna be the new noob course that bad players will pick repeatedly to give themselves a better chance of winning. I predict myself losing lots of points there! Of course, this is assuming the online works the same as the Wii version.

Never knew that Wii Mushroom Gorge is in. A lot of people hate that course, though it looks awesome in this game. I already knew about the other courses though.

Can anyone translate the names of the new courses?

EDIT: Also I initially hated the idea of bringing the coins back, mainly because it might be lame if the front runners could grab them all every race to gain a huge advantage. But in these videos there seems to be a lot of coins to grab so it may not be as bad as I thought.

Yeah that's the website I've been using. Hadn't noticed they had updated it but it looks like lots of info is out now. I wonder who the other characters are? The only hint we have is that they're new characters, but that could mean anything.

If the online features are real then that's just awesome. It sounds like they're trying to appeal to more experienced players as well as casual gamers (they can make their own rules so now they don't have to worry about blue shells stealing wins from them and such).

So nintendo had a press conference in japan about both Mariokart 7 and the new firmware update coming in november, and NoA put out press releases to go along with it.

NoA Mariokart 7 press release:
October 21, 2011

The upcoming Mario Kart™ 7 game for the portable Nintendo 3DS™ system delivers more than just a glasses-free 3D racing experience. Mario Kart 7 delivers frenetic racing fun by air, land and sea. Longtime fans of the franchise will encounter new features and customization options, while newcomers will love racing with their favorite Mushroom Kingdom characters against opponents near and far.

At the heart of Mario Kart is multiplayer racing. Using a broadband Internet connection or local wireless built into the Nintendo 3DS, players can race against their own friends or even against opponents worldwide. The new Community feature allows players to create groups with other Mario Kart fans while setting up specific rules to make customized racing environments. Easy setup allows players to quickly create a community and share with others via the StreetPass™ feature. Community leaderboards will also show the most up-to-date information from recent races. Solo players can race through the Grand Prix and Time Trial modes using either the Circle Pad layout or the motion-sensitive gyro controls of the system to steer their karts. The gyro controls also allow players to control their karts in a first-person perspective, a feature never before seen in the Mario Kart franchise.

Mario Kart 7 will also use StreetPass and SpotPass™ features built into the Nintendo 3DS system. Walking by other Mario Kart 7 players in real life with StreetPass enabled allows gamers to exchange racing scores, win/loss records, number of collected coins and other game data. With SpotPass enabled, players will be able to receive ghost data to race against. Up to seven ghosts can be downloaded at the same time, allowing for a full eight-player race. Additionally, a Mario Kart channel will be a central location for players to view information collected through StreetPass and SpotPass.

Every iteration of the Mario Kart series introduces new twists and turns, and this newest Mario Kart game is no different. New playable characters include Metal Mario from the Super Mario 64™ game and Lakitu, the spectacled cloud-riding Koopa. Players can also choose to race as their own Mii™ characters. New power-ups include the Fire Flower and Super Leaf. The Fire Flower allows players to throw blazing balls of fire at other drivers, while the Super Leaf makes the Tanooki Tail appear on the back of karts to knock other drivers and items out of the way. And, of course, the karts come equipped with gliders for maneuvering through the air and propellers for underwater propulsion.

The Mushroom Cup and Flower Cup introduce eight new courses, including ones on Wuhu Island and one created by Retro Studios set in the jungles from the Donkey Kong Country™ Returns game. The Shell Cup and Banana Cup feature eight classic courses, including Luigi's Mansion from the Nintendo DS™ and Koopa Beach from the Nintendo 64™. There will be 16 new courses and 16 classic courses total.

You know what I really, really don't get?

This 3DS download seems to be the perfect platform for them to sell US/EU localised versions of the Earthbound/Mother series. Despite never getting an English language release, they have a HUGE cult following - the protagonists are very popular in Smash Bros. series, and so on.

We know from the strong sales of the Chrono Trigger DS rerelease that people will pay for it notwithstanding the fact that they already have copies, and the owning audience is far smaller in this case and the want-to-own audience is still really big.

I believe the reason it never got released in the US was concern that there was a lot of infringement of trademarks etc. in the stereotypifying of US life, and concerns it wouldn't be well received because of the satire. It doesn't seem like it would be that much more work to localise the trademark infringements out into new made-up names, and we know the cultural risk is minimal.

Am I the only person who thinks Nintendo is sitting on a fucking goldmine?

But Earthbound/Mother 2 WAS released in the US wasn't it? I don't see how the satire or the 'trademark infringement' would be a problem. I doubt it would be an issue now if it wasn't an issue then (though they admittedly sold poorly at the time).

There is no real reason why the series hasn't been given a wider release since then, other than Nintendo not being bothered to do it. I really wish they would make a 3DS version though (or at least a virtual console release of Earthbound).

That's awesome, if it's coming to Europe, there's absolutely no reason it wouldn't show up in NA, I'm pretty stoked about it.

and @ atsync, yes, this is just how nintendo operates, I have an idea why they only release ~1 game a week on VC, but it's fucking aggravating and I wish they would get their head out of their ass and throw down some of the AAA titles we all love from the gameboy era.

hooray
there better be smogon hunting parties formed (unless they dont add online ;_;)

edit: holy shit that trailer

I am really excited now, those sub-species are fucking awesome looking, especially the white lagi, ashen jhen and that goddamn tundra Jinouga.

Also the changes to the weapons after they've been fully charged are cool as hell, and I don't know if the trailer showed it off but some of the armour got redesigned too and looks so rad.

They'd better add online @_@

agreeing that im super excited to see subspecies of the tri beasties, there was such a painful lack of recolors compared to unite

pink lud, tundra jinouga, white lagi, and purple jhen look the best

can't wait to trash plesioth in the water finally
and the dramatic scene with joe at the end was top notch, glad my favorite monster is still in some limelight

even if there isn't online I won't complain that much, though it is the funnest part, playing solo is fine too
racked up like 300 hrs solo on unite, so its not new to me

(do people even still play tri online? i haven't been on in like a whole year)

there is an active community for it still

Its a pretty big let down that online isn't an option even if you do play solo only, I can't really complain though since sadly I didn't finish the extended campaign for tri anyway

edit: in other news, mario kart 7, 8 players online, dedicated 3DS channel, spotpass and streetpass ghost data, race up to 7 ghosts simultaneously, jump into friends games and more. Thats an impressive feature list

well solo will be good for my hour of commuting everyday atleast, and I can play co-op with my girlfriend, but I'm still bummed about no online.

I popped tri in a week ago or so, and started playing a new character, I just assumed online was dead so I didn't even try but maybe I'll go back and play some more.
