This week's entry is definitely unique - currently unranked from the viability rankings, it has seen better days in the past. Can you make Infernape a viable 'mon in the tier? Deadline for submissions is Friday the 20th.

Why are you giving us a Pokemon that is basically unviable ;;;

infernape.gif

Infernape @ Life Orb / Expert Belt / Electrium Z
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Flare Blitz
- Close Combat
- Thunder Punch

I'm really struggling here; if you run Choice Band you might as well just run Darmanitan or Victini which, yknow, can actually do something; Nasty Plot does nothing in a tier where Toxapex can just come in and sit on its face; all-out attacker I guess could work thanks to its coverage but it's so horrendously lacking in immediate firepower that it is one of those things which is approximately 7000000x better on paper than in practice; this Pokemon isn't viable lol. At least this set can actually break stuff sometimes. SD boosts Nape's firepower nicely, Flare Blitz is Fire-type and as such bones stuff, Close Combat makes TTar a non-issue, Thunder Punch breaks through Water-types like Toxapex after a boost, with Electrium also being able to break through, like, Cune/PhysDef Pex/Fini etc. nicely. LO is nice just to boost overall firepower if you don't mind impaling yourself even harder on Ferrothorn, EBelt does the same vs SE targets and is enough to ensure the KO vs SpD Pex after SR. Kinda gets boned by Quagsire but that's just part of the deal with using Infernape lol, just make sure u have an answer for it in the back and you're probably gucci unless you face a player who is both competent and carrying a team which doesn't let Nape set up for free without any counterplay in the back.

Infernape @ Focus Sash
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Taunt
- Endeavor
- Close Combat

This mon doesn't do much in the meta, Scarf was a nice revenge killer for SG Magearna but 1. SG Magearna is nowhere near as common anymore and 2. The set is banned so I can't use it here. Infernape can work as a Suicide Lead, it has rocks and some nice utility in Taunt to prevent Defog / opposing hazards or setup and Endeavor meaning it can weaken something to 1%, which is probably more than it can do with an offensive set tbh lol. Close Combat is a nice STAB move so you're not complete taunt bait and have some offensive presence.

Reserving Work Up Infernape
1524087080773.png

Fun Wukong (Infernape) (M) @ Firium Z
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Work Up
- Fire Blast
- Earthquake
- Vacuum Wave

With access to Work Up and a decent Speed Tier, Infernape can put its best shot at wallbreaking opposing pokemon. With access to Earthquake, Infernape can easily 2HKO Toxapex, and can slam through common Bulu-Tran teams, with a Firium Nuke for the common Landorus, Clefable, and Zapdos. Fire Blast is the main Fire Stab of choice, capitalizing on Work Up effieciently, and Vacuum Wave is nice priority for the likes of Kartana and Tyranitar. THanks to Toxapex being dealt with on this set, you can focus on breaking the rest of the mons who will almost be certainly weak to Infernape. Of course, you need to have answers to Ash-Greninja and Tapu Fini for this set to work. Definitely an interesting breaker with the correct support, I would recommend that people try it.

+1 4 Atk Infernape Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Toxapex: 156-184 (51.4 - 60.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
+1 252 SpA Infernape Fire Blast vs. 248 HP / 56 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 306-360 (89.2 - 104.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Grassy Terrain recovery
+1 4 Atk Infernape Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 428-504 (132.5 - 156%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 SpA Infernape Inferno Overdrive (185 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 466-549 (121.9 - 143.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Infernape Inferno Overdrive (185 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Zapdos: 423-498 (110.4 - 130%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Infernape Fire Blast vs. 248 HP / 156 SpD Celesteela: 392-464 (98.7 - 116.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Infernape Inferno Overdrive (185 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Clefable: 421-496 (106.8 - 125.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Leftovers recovery

Infernape @ Leftovers
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 248 HP / 140 Def / 120 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Slack Off
- Taunt / Stealth Rock / Flare Blitz
- Low Kick / Flare Blitz

Offensive Infernape is useless, but defensive Infernape with its fast WoW is surprisingly not. The given EV spread outspeeds Jolly Lando, but feel free to run less or more depending on your team. Low Kick nails any Heatrans that try to absorb WoW while Flare Blitz chunks what Flare Blitz usually chunks; Fire Punch with Iron Fist is also an option to avoid recoil, but it misses the guaranteed 2HKO on standard Steela and I personally consider that to be way too important a target.

Metronome Infernape
infernape.gif
Infernape @ Metronome
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Close Combat
- Earthquake
- Gunk Shot

This set should work the same as most metronome sets work. Just keep clicking attacks and rack up the damage.

Double STAB and Earthquake to potentially 2HKO Toxapex, Gunk Shot is for Fini I guess.

No one will expect this, so hopefully it can nab a suprise KO.

VS Toxapex

252 Atk Infernape Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Toxapex: 130-154 (42.9 - 50.8%)

252 Atk Metronome Infernape Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Toxapex: 143-169 (47.1 - 55.7%)

VS Zygarde

252 Atk Infernape Close Combat vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Zygarde: 144-169 (40.2 - 47.2%)

252 Atk Metronome Infernape Close Combat vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Zygarde: 158-186 (44.1 - 51.9%)

VS Mega-Venusaur

252 Atk Infernape Flare Blitz vs. 248 HP / 88 Def Thick Fat Venusaur-Mega: 132-156 (36.3 - 42.9%)

252 Atk Metronome Infernape Flare Blitz vs. 248 HP / 88 Def Thick Fat Venusaur-Mega: 145-172 (39.9 - 47.3%)

VS Zapdos

252 Atk Infernape Flare Blitz vs. 248 HP / 240+ Def Zapdos: 135-160 (35.2 - 41.7%)

252 Atk Metronome Infernape Flare Blitz vs. 248 HP / 240+ Def Zapdos: 148-176 (38.6 - 45.9%) [almost always KOs after rocks]

Most of these need rocks/chip to KO because Infernape is kinda weak, but I think this could still work.

LO Mixed with Taunt
infernape.gif

Infernape @ Life Orb
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Earthquake
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Vacuum Wave
- Taunt

"Felixx what the fuck is this?" Okay hear me out, this is the best Infernape set I could think of (after SD) since Nasty Plot is actually unviable with Sp Def HazePex on most Balance Builds, so I came up with LO Mixed with Taunt Infernape, and now let's get into explaining the set...

*EQ is for Pex, and can 2HKO Sp Def variants
*HP Ice is for Lando, and it can take it out after 2 Stealth Rocks switch-ins, additionally it's also able to hit Gliscor for good damage
*Vacuum Wave is some Heat shit that can revenge kill Kartana and weakened Gren (like half HP) assuming it's not going to Shuriken
*And Taunt allows me to actually annoy Clefable and Gastro

252 Atk Life Orb Infernape Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Toxapex: 169-200 (55.7 - 66%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery

4 SpA Life Orb Infernape Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 286-338 (74.8 - 88.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

4 SpA Life Orb Infernape Hidden Power Ice vs. 244 HP / 152 SpD Gliscor: 250-296 (71 - 84%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Poison Heal

4 SpA Life Orb Infernape Vacuum Wave vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Kartana: 283-335 (108.8 - 128.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

4 SpA Life Orb Infernape Vacuum Wave vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Greninja-Ash: 156-187 (54.7 - 65.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Choice Specs Greninja-Ash Water Shuriken (15 BP) (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Infernape: 252-306 (86 - 104.4%) -- approx. 6.3% chance to OHKO

P.S. Infernape's Heat but complete @$$

Scarf Infernape

Infernape @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Vacuum Wave
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- U-turn

A decent scarf set that can revenge kill for example +2 shift gear Magearna, scarf Kartana, scarf Lando-T, +1 weakened Zygarde or it can just grab momentum with U-turn as the opponent switches in their Toxapex. I used this thing on my magic room team so you know it must be legit.

Infernape @ Firium Z
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk/ 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Substitute
- Swords Dance
- Flare Blitz
- Earthquake

the idea of this is to use sub vs stuff like celesteela and sd up as they break your sub with like pex or something, then sub again or nuke something with flare blitz. this set is better on zardx but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ this mon is outclassed anyway. blaze is a bad ability but it actually helps in this case cause u break through stuff like lando if you're in blaze range. firium z lets you nuke something, and ground-type coverage is the best coverage for fire types in general cause u need to hit pex.

+1 252 Atk Blaze Infernape Inferno Overdrive (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 240+ Def Landorus-Therian: 465-547 (121.7 - 143.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Leftovers recovery

+2 252 Atk Blaze Infernape Inferno Overdrive (190 BP) vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Toxapex: 274-323 (90.4 - 106.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery (can't haze and scald at the same time so its in your favor to get up an sd vs a move thats not haze).

252 Atk Infernape Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 356-420 (92.2 - 108.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Here is a set I tried a while back that actually managed to put in work:

images (1).png

Napepalm (Infernape) (M) @ Firium Z
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Overheat
- Close Combat
- Vacuum Wave

This set allows you to both put pressure on usual switch-ins, like Lando-T and Zapdos, and setup a Nasty Plot to nuke most of the tier. Close Combat allows to pressure Chansey and Heatran, thus keeping those 2 from coming in safely and dealing more damage than Focus Blast to Chansey, specifically. You also avoid misses. The one mon that does not care about anything this set can do is Toxapex, so you will need to pack something to deal with that mon. Zygarde or the rare Tankchomp could also be a problem, although they do get chipped by CC. It may not be a viable mon, but set can be interesting on some teams.

Thanks again to everyone who's submitted. I'm well aware that many of you are questioning why i've chosen infernape as this week's "Case Study". Well, there's a very valid reason as to why Infernape was the case study. But Before that, I'd like to showcase my own Infernape:

Spr_4d_392.png

Infernape
Ability: Blaze
EVs: There will never be a way to determine the EVs on this thing.
Sassy Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Close Combat
- Mach Punch
- Fire Blast

Right, you can probably tell that there's something wrong with this submission - there's no item, the EVs are literally impossible to determine and it has a sassy nature. Well to answer that, this isn't a submission - rather, it is my infernape. In three days time (as of writing this post on the 20th of April, 2018) it will be 10 years since I would have started to play my copy of Diamond. It was on that day that I would choose my partner, Chimchar and begin my pokemon "journey" Nintendo don't be so full of yourselves and embark on an experience that would shape a large portion of my life.

I would spend countless hours playing the game - at first it was trying to figure out how to get past sandgem town leave me alone assholes I was 6 and being captivated by the many uplifting themes of Route 201, Twinleaf Town and Sandgem Town and would constantly walk about with my Chimchar and Starly, enthralled by their abilities to do just about anything (and by that I mean Lee Harvey Oswald a Bidoof out of existance)™. After a kid at after school care showed me how to leave, I got ahold of myself and really started playing the game - catching nearly anything remotely interesting - more than often just duplicatees - whilst continuing on with the main story - first beating all the gym leaders, a challenge in itself, especially as a very young and impressionable child. This, combined with beating team galactic and cynthia gave me the confidence to do just about anything, even if I regret it all these years later. To this day, it allows me to do things I still wouldn't be able to do. I think the most recent example would be my time on showdown, which has improved my ability to make quick and calculated decisions, which I hope will help with my endeavour to become a medical professional in the near future.

also i felt like it since it's my birthday in 3 days

Anyways, enough of my own bullshit, here our this week's nominees!

This week i've also got a few announcements:

First thing:

I've created some resources on the thread! I'm not too happy with them but I'd like to hear your thoughts on them.

Should the guide post follow the current format or should I get a sample post and describe why it's a good post? I'd like to hear your thoughts on this, as i'm not quite satisfied with myself. Feel free to PM me, leave a comment on my wall or to just type it up as a response.

Second thing:

I'm looking to add even more resources to the thread, what are your ideas and what do you think of my ideas? Again, i'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

my ideas include:
  • Next Best Thing Submission Viability Rankings, where I order the sets into a list, ranked by viability of each set in the meta. all sets will be listed! (but only if you people approve of it)
  • Free-For-All Round - everyone can enter any pokemon and any set and put them against one another.
  • Sample Teams, where me and members of the community build teams based around sets posted on the forums (might have to post the teams on the Bazaar, but the idea holds strong)
  • Role Compendium, where I list the functionalities of every set and what sort of builds they work best on.
  • Next Best Thing Discord, to discuss everything listed above!
and finally....

thank you everyone for the fabulous reaction to my rmt! I would have never guess it would be showcased, so I really should (and will) give a shoutout to nubzie who made the nomination. Also using this as a reminder that Melbourne is being invaded by hipsters.

anyways, that's all from me, so as always, happy voting!
