Pokemon Platinum - The definitive thread: Mach 3 (Competitive Discussion)

*skips 3 pages*

it could be that hypnosis has always been 60% acc and that gamefreak made a typo in d/p and put 70% when it really wasn't.

Outrage Salamence scares me. Not just a pure physical version either, but packing Flamethrower is damn nice. He might not have Swords Dance, but his Special Attack is more viable then Garchomps, and Chain Chomp was still very effective.

Platinum is pretty screwy.

If you're saying that Safeguard protects you from your own confusion, it doesn't.

This doesn't have anything to say about it, other than it blocks Confusion in general. I also remember the wierd Pokemon Stadium 2 school thing, in which one of the battles required you to set up Safeguard and use Thrash and not get confused (along the same lines).

Even if it doesn't, you're immune to statuses stopping your sweep as you're locked into the Outrage (Shedinja being the most extreme example, walling that set but not being used very often). It's an option.

EDIT;; lol, posted "Safequard" typo in C&C

I brought this up on Shoddy (and was shot down), but can we have some sort of "DP clause" or something that disallows Platinum-exclusive features? I personally feel that this is going to be a big mess, and I would like to just stick with the familiar DP environment until everything gets sorted out.

Not like you should be using theorymon to hype a Pokémon...

Regice takes 25% from stealth rock and cannot switch in repeatedly as already discussed.

Yes it can, it just needs to Rest and Sleep Talk

Zapdos as previously stated is screwed after switching in + spec def Drop

So Zapdos switches out, knowing it burnt 2 of the 8 PP easily, as you switch to another Grass resist. Pick one; there are plenty.

Dragonite will take a spec def drop and then hp ice is being talked about as the number 1 hidden power along with ground, but then again, thats sort of a cheap argument.

Yeah, especially because HP Ice isn't being talked about as the number one Hidden Power... Without HP Ice you can still flinch Salamence, but without HP Ground every Steel type can waste PP.

Your jirachi set is incredibly specialized and I already said metagross.

So? Pokémon specialize when dealing with OU threats all the time. Everything in OU centralizes the metagame, the question is how much.

And yes, that is not long enough at all since your basically requiring every team to need two of those.

We don't know that yet. You shouldn't make that claim until after testing... Maybe you only need two generic Grass resists to waste the PP... and getting two Grass resists isn't hard as Grass is a bad offensive type. Maybe any team with Metagross is fine.

I don't know how Shaymin will fare, I'm just trying to make arguments against some of the most common arguments here. You guys have to remember the most important part of Seed Flare: Lowish accuracy and tiny PP. It may not be hard to stall out.

Hmmm Hypnosis dropping to 60% (or maybe it always has been 60 like some have suggested??) doesn't make Gengar happy and Scizor getting Bullet Punch definitely does not make him happy. However Trick will be fun and could replace Hynosis on standard sets.
I am loving Ice Punch Luke, looks like we are gonna have to rely more on Bulky Gyarados to counter SD Luke more.
Heatwave Zappy seems interesting, finally we will be able to utilize Zapdos' terrific offensive stats (CS set looks even more awesome now).

Wait are they still having nasty plot in tutors? I forgot who said that but is that true? if so then You know how gengar would be. That thing will own CHARTS lol. it would effect the whole battling system. You'll see more Gengars with hypnosis then nasty plot then sweep the team. ughh! I already hate gengar enough as it is.

I'm pretty sure NP is a level up move for Darkrai. Maybe some others but I know Darkrai for sure. As for gengar, I don't know if you saw but Acc. for Hyp. has been dropped to 60% making it a little less usable. Trick gar may be just as annoying though

I wonder if Porygon2 can still counter DD Salamence even though it has Outrage. Don't forget it has Trace to bounce back Intimidate.

Yache Berry Mence Outrage on Max HP/Max DEF Porygon2:
46.26% - 54.28%

LO Outrage Vs. Same P2:
59.89% - 70.59%

ANd P2 can obviously Ice Beam Salamence to Hell (I picture Salamence may run 176 Speed EVs now to outspeed Adamant Lucario since it gained Ice Punch. Even with no Sp. ATK EVs, Ice Beam has like a 99% chance to OHKO 80 HP Mence. 120 HP EV Mence has like a 23% chance to live. And Yache Berry Mence will always live 2 Hits obviously.).

Before you say "Brick Break", remember, Outrage does more than Brick Break to P2 (180 Base Power vs. 150)

Working against technical difficulties and the shard guy being an ass, Chou and I can confirm that Sceptile gets ThunderPunch in Platinum, though I'm not sure if that has a huge impact seeing as it already got it in Emerald...

I know it didn't in Emerald at least, my Safeguard Dragonite always got confused by Outrage. I haven't tried it in DP though.

Oh wow, Outrage Salamence, Ice Punch Lucario, Heat Wave Zapdos, Superpower Dragonite...looks like that Platinum has drastically changed the face of the metagame :). One question: Are these moves going to be implemented yet on Shoddy, or do we have to wait until Platinum is released in the US?

Honchkrow @ Life Orb
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -Sp. Atk)
Trait: Insomnia
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
- Night Slash
- Drill Peck
- Superpower
- Sucker Punch / Pursuit

I get a funny feeling this is going to become standard.

Also, Shiftry's looking pretty great now.

Outrage? Earthquake? Superpower? Those are good, strong moves for a single Pokemon...

Changing topic sorta, does anything else get Synthesis besides Cherrim?

I mean, there are more defensive Pokemon that want it. (Tangrowth says "hi".) They could also try to spread it out to non-grass Pokemon. (Although it'd be pretty ridiculous, Synthesis Groudon. O.o)
