Spirit Shackle wasn't even an exceptional move. It's better than mean look for sure, but some people were acting as though it was basically shadow tag.
For what its worth, Spirit Shackle is still the best special ghost type move in the game. It has the same power as Shadow Ball, but also has the added effect of trapping which can be useful in a myriad of situation as Magma Storm heatran has shown us.

EDIT: My bad, Spirit Shackle is physical. Point still stands about it being the best physical ghost type move though

I know I don't have much experience with competitive, but by what metric is 105 "mediocre"?! Taking all final-stage pokemon together, I'm pretty sure that 105 is above-average. (...Competitive Pokemon had better not be an example of Rocket Tag Gameplay...) If 105 is "mediocre", how many pokemon (that aren't mythical or legendary) classify as high-grade? 20?

Although what you said about not functioning well defensively...to be sure, do you mean the type by itself (five weaknesses IS bothersome, to be sure), or in combination with its stats (including its somewhat-worrisome Physical Defense)?
Both, lol. That typing just doesn't really work defensively.

105 is ok, but the power creep was real last Gen, so we'll see how that holds up in this one.

Feel like we're kinda going off topic now tho :x

More details on Alolan Dugtrio:
not professor oak mentions digletts hair is metallic substance formed like glass due to volcanic eruptions creating magma
And even mentioning that it's not Ground/Fire?

Damn, GameFreak. In just one month you completely destroyed all my hype.

Being competitively viable takes a lot of things into account. Typing, BST, movepool, ability and perhaps most importantly what else is strong in the meta. People are hoping for a broken HA at this point because it's the only thing that could stop Decidueye from joining Trevenant in NU.

So, for those wanting context on a certain character:

colress was there for like 3 minutes, he mentioned that Z power was interesting and gave me the TM for flame charge.

Also:

There hasn't been a second rival using the third Starter thus far. Lurantis also says that Aether Paradise is smelling awful fishy.

Spirit Shackle is physical, though yeah, I do see the utility, but not on something like Decidueye unless it gets Ghastly Wings for ghost move priority.

Now that would be a damn fine Ability

Well, Sceptile gets unburden and Venusaur gets chlorophyll.... Decidueye can get either one and be back in the game.

Maybe GameFreak just isn't as Spike-oriented as you are? I can understand an aversion to making everything a physical or special specialist, though; could easily get boring from the artist's point of view. Are specialists the ONLY thing that can do well in competition, Pokemon or otherwise? I've yet to see causal evidence of that. (Empirical evidence? I don't see how that can get a probability to 0 or 1...)
Chill out with the strawman please.

No, specialists are not the only archetypes that can do well in competitive games, and I have absolutely nothing against mixed attackers when they're done right. In fact, it's my probably my favorite archetype in Pokemon. When they're done poorly however, they're pretty bad. Decidueye's stat spread just screams wasteful. It does not need to be merely good at 2 attacking stats. There's no good reason for it and it's going to suffer pretty badly as a result (barring a hail mary from hidden ability).

With the brief exception of Sceptile, no Grass-type starter has ever been good enough for OU in singles IIRC, Hidden Abilities or Mega Evolutions notwithstanding.

We have yet to see Decidueye's Hidden Ability and entire movepool. Getting Agility, Tailwind or something similar may make offensive sets viable (Life Orb with Tailwind/Leaf Storm or Energy Ball or Giga Drain/Shadow Ball/Filler is the first thing that comes to my mind), but again, not OU-good, unless the Hidden Ability is that good.

Alright, to answer a question a lot of people have had:

professor not oak has given me some apricorn balls when Ive found him, got moon ball near observatory.
Friend ball and heavy ball are arguably the best balls of the bunch. The others.... Not so much...

Someone asked if Team Skull was up to something other than being a funny evil team, and... well...

as far as I can tell they are secretly helping team aether.

bear in mind, we could get exclusive HA's for starters again this gen, much like Greninja's Protean. I mean Decidueye would need a speed equivalent of that to be relevant, but nonetheless

And a Story Spoiler. Strange things are afoot on Ula'Ula Island.

while I raided po town, city team skull took over, plumeria stole cosmog from lillie and gladion has taken hau and I to the aether base to try to recover it

for all you wifiers out there: "professor not oak has given me some apricorn balls when Ive found him, got moon ball near observatory."

they're back we might be able to get moon ball umbreon finally.

ninja'd v_v damn you jack
Muwahahaha!

UPDATE:

all the way on Ula'Ula, and no UB-02 yet, just UB-01

"DUDE GET ONLINE THE GAME LEAKED"
"OH MAN DID THAT ONE GUY ACUTALLY CRACK THE ENCRYPTION!?!?!"
"W, who? No, someone got the game early."
"... So no datamines, just vague stat calculations. Not much to learn form that. I was hoping for mo..."
"Decidueye is slow."
"WE KNOW TOO MUCH. WHO WERE WE TO THINK THAT MAN COULD SEE POKEMON EARLY AND NOT SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES!"
"Maybe gengar doesn't have levitate?"
"Good night sweet prince."

*tears intensify*
