Rank the trainer battle music across the generations

Which is the best trainer battle music?

Gen I is easily the best. Of course, this may be nostalgia speaking.
I didn't particularly care for the Gen III or IV music. Some of the HGSS remakes were pretty good though (Ice Pass/Dark Cave, anyone?)

What bullshit do you speak billy?

Then again, I suppose this IS a thread of opinions folk will rebute, and so here's mine.

1 > 5 > 3 > 2 > 4

First gen's theme just brings such a nostalgic point that it's supreme. It's also catchy as shit.

Fifth gen takes claim that I can't get it out my noggin, and as someone stated that it changes as your mons get more beat up is impressive.

Third gen is not so bad, it could be better, though in terms of gym leader themes it loses grossly.

Second gen...just somehow is merely mediocre. Sure, it's pretty good to listen to, but it just seems sorta...meh.

Fourth gen gets no love because it truly was a shit trainer theme with not a single memorable part to it. In fact, when I play my Platinum I zonk the volume off because frankly save from the gyms, Cyrus and champion, the game has no good music at all. Compulsory Super Contest Hall theme never helped either.

There were two trainer battle themes in Gen 2, one for Johto and one for Kanto. I liked the Kanto theme a lot, it always sounded very snazzy to me, like the game knew that by that point my Typhlosion was OP.

1, 4, 5, 3, 2

had to listen to them all again to judge fairly and i'm actually really surprised i ranked gen4 second

2>5=1>4=3

I hate RSE and DP's trainer music (also, not nostalgia influenced; gen 4 was my first gen and 3 was my second), gen 5 and 1 have nice themes, 2 is simply the best (have to say that Kanto battle is my favorite though; I hope that counts as gen 2 lol).

I presume this is only for normal trainers, though.

For gym battles:

5>>>>>>>4=2=1>3

Gen 3's good themes were mainly in the rival team themes as well as mt pyre and the graveyard next to it (the name of which I can't recall for the life of me).

1 > 5 > 2 > 4 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>3

Absolutely hated three. Coincidentally (or maybe not there could be some correlation there I really hated it that much) three is my least favorite gen ingame. Five would be first if not for nostalgia. I wish I could put GSC higher, but I can't nudge it over BW and definitely not RBY .

2>5>3>1>4

Gen 2 was the best. My Meganium and Lanturn killed everything in-game lol. And even ignoring the nostalgia factor, I still think gen 2 had the best music overall.

As much as I hate to rank Gen 1 so low (below gen 3 even), I dunno, I always liked the Gen 3 battle music. It's wayyyy too hard to pick though, because I like them all aggghhhh -_-

4>1>5>2>3 for trainer themes. I really like Gen 3, but I didn't realize how lackluster the trainer music was to some other tracks within the gen until relistening to them all.

2 > 1 > 3 > 4 > 5

As someone who has heard these songs tens of thousands of times due to Battle Tower/Frontier/Subway proclivity, I've had ample occasion to judge the Trainer Battle music, though I have relistened to all of them twice already. I feel GSC wins because it's a nice fresh take on the if-you-rated-this-worse-than-third-and-are-not-in-total-love-with-the-ones-you-put-ahead-of-it-your-opinion-is-wrong RBY theme. I love how it goes from minor to major at 1:15, as somewhat of a reassurance that all in trainer battles is not necessarily serious and somber.

RBY is just "beaten" by GSC for me, fantastic aside from obvious nostalgia. ADV is "good", "lol netbattle". The past two gens are incredibly underwhelming. Even with PK Gaming's note on the Low HP theme bolstering BW's aura, it isn't really technically part of the song, and there's actually a "mistake" in the BW theme that really annoys me. It's either a mistake or an intentional "bad" variation on the "correct" Subway Battle theme (which is otherwise virtually identical), and to hear what I'm talking about, listen here:

The five notes of the bassline that are a falling scale...the fourth and fifth notes are repeated. There's seriously no reason for that, and I immediately noticed the "correct" variation when I first got to the Battle Subway and heard this:

I hope you can hear what I'm talking about if you didn't already notice it yourself beforehand. Again, the songs are otherwise identical so this is a total "wtf you cant even say you didnt notice that, composer". Which is not to say I'm actually faulting Junichi really, he's probably my favorite musician ever in a way lol.

Anyway, I've probably heard DPPT theme itself over 20,000 times. I earned over 7,800 BP in Pearl and over 13,000 in Plat, and 1 BP is essentially one battle (you get 7 BP virtually every time you win seven battles in the Tower), which is one song, so yeah. But it's not really that I'm tired of it or got tired of it, I could listen to songs like Dive or Bicycle (Gen III or IV) forever. It just really isn't all that good compared to Chromatics and Metallics. Maybe in a few years I'll have the proper separation from the awful, awful grind that was getting to 330 or 500 or 1,000 or 2,000 or 2,364 wins, but I kind of doubt the DP Trainer is going to overtake the ADV theme anyway.

oh my god are you kidding

gsc's is so bad, it sounds like they let a maniacal serial killer-cum-part time dj loose on the original rby theme and settled with the first thing they could make out smeared on the wall of the studio in blood and feces

forget that!!

3, 2, 1, 4, 5

I like Gen 3's soundtrack the most overall. Gen 1 and 2 are very close, it was hard to decide between those. Gen 4 has pretty nice trainer battle theme too. They are all a lot better than Gen 5 in my opinion.

This exactly :o.

I seriously don't get the hype for gen 5 theme, this doesn't get me pumped at all, in fact it gets lower as it goes on especially in the middle. It just feels empty imo, or it's missing something.

haha yeah right, engine limitations aside (ones that apply to gen 1 as well) it's a masterpiece. it has movements despite being like two minutes, and managed to improve upon a great song. maybe you're having a stroke, mr i-rated-gen-4-second :(
