that said, if we wanna extend to all battle music (wild pokemon, legendary, gym leader, champion etc), bw wins in a motherfucking landslide and it is not close. zekrom/reshiram theme, team plasma battle, N battle 2 (prince N), gym leader's final poke...all are absolutely astounding.
Oh my yes... RSE Aroma Lady theme is so good.
i challenged the fifth and final kimono sister in gold and let the music play for a good 10 minutes

Also, who just flies to towns for the sole purpose of listening to the music there? Verdanturf Town, White's Opelucid City, and pretty much anywhere in GSC are amazing!

for trainer theme i prefer the hoenn one, the sinnoh one got stuck in my head after over 5341654365 hours of playing and i dont like it very much anymore

I think that almost everything (musically that is) in Gen 2 is better than almost everything that isn't Gen 2. The trainer battle theme is kind of underwhelming, but all the trainer battle music seems underwhelming to me after listening to it so many times.
But every single town and route in GSC has such a beautiful theme that I can't bring myself to vote any generation better musically than Gen II ever.

Playing pokemon growing up, holy shit, the first gen song still rings in my mind sometimes. GSC is a close second. They both sound really great even with the old 8/16 bit sound. First gen remix in FRLG wasn't that great, but HGSS did a great job with the revamping and remixing of the music. In modern version, HGSS takes the cake.
I thought 4 was generally a good trainer song and 5 was pretty solid too. Those are tied imo.
For the third gen, eh, I stopped playing VGM music while playing on a emulator and used my mp3 instead so I don't get that feel for nostalgia. Don't really dig the song anyways.
Edit: For other songs that are my favorite, probably HGSS' gym leader themes, all three battle frontier themes (PT/HGSS/E), SS Anne, Old school Pallet Town and Pewter City themes.

Expanding my list of Pokemon music I like.
Emerald's Frontier Brain battle, Team Aqua's theme, HGSS's Ho-oh battle, GSC's Viridian Forest, Platinum's Giratina battle and Driftveil City are some of my favorite themes in the franchise.

I didn't like the DP trainer battle theme when I first heard it in 2007 and I still don't now. Mainly the "herp derp let's repeat the same five notes over and over again for 12 measures" - seriously wtf was that.
RSE's was decent, but forgettable. I was about to put GSC over RBY but after listening to them both again I'd have to put RBY ever so slightly above GSC.
I still stand by BW having the best in the series. They really pulled out all the stops for that and just about all of the music in that game.

4 has a nice feel to it, like you're in the pokemon universe and not just sitting on your couch playing the ds
5 is mediocre
3 is memorable but i remember one part is really grating
2 is 8bit, which usually isn't a problem but it's also a bad song so the 8bit makes it even worse

also i dont care if its not a mainstream pokemon game, XD and COL had such amazing music; the boss battles (COL and XD's final bosses are boss) special battles like the pokespot battles and mirror b (maybe micle b to an extent) and some locations like the purification places; if the chamber's fully charged theme was extended a little bit it would be godly.

miror b theme is great, im so glad skarm sent it to me, but i watched toothache's colosseum speedrun and most of the music is shit compared to the canonical games and even stuff like pokemon ranger (not that ive played many non-canon pokemon games)
