Severe weather and tornadoes

I'm not sure how many people have been watching, but there is a major tornado outbreak going on in the US right now. Tornadoes have hit the north end of Minneapolis, Minnesota and caused some damage there, while Joplin, Missouri has been hit incredibly hard with houses completely levelled and deaths and injuries confirmed. The hospital in Joplin may have an explosion, according to officials.

It's not just those places, either, with tornado watches and warnings from the upper peninsula of Michigan down into Texas. In the next few days the threat just moves slowly eastward, so it won't end tonight. May is historically the most active month for tornadoes, so this isn't unexpected, but nonetheless this is a dangerous situation.

So here people in the path of storms can talk about what happened or just severe weather in general. Of course, if you're not in the US and crazy weather is going on there it's more than welcome, as major problems can and do occur elsewhere.

A running list of US severe weather reports, reset every day.

he's right, tornadoes happen every day there they should be used to it

Tornadoes don't happen here in Missouri everyday. It's a pretty big event. If we have one in an area per year that's something. However, some areas, like Joplin have seen more than one this year. We've been very fortunate in Pacific MO. We had several around us, but none in town. I really do wish it would stop raining though.

Good thing I was not in Minneapolis when it happened. I was actually eating at a diner about 10 minutes drive from the Downtown.

But yeah, tornadoes happen around here a lot so it's no biggie...

We've had similar luck in my area. There was a tornado just north of here recently but it stayed in really rural areas, luckily. And yes I'm tired of the rain too. 13 inches since April first, seriously?

Also no threat of an explosion now apparently, so that's good. There's basically nothing but part of the hospital left standing in that area, and that's never normal.

Come on, tornados are no big deal. People here need to man up. Its just some wind.

(and yes, I've been through plenty of them, it really is, no big deal unless you are unlucky enough to actually get hit.)

My house in Milwaukee is literally getting rocked by thunder right now...but it's an old house, too.

No tornadoes anywhere in Wisconsin for the past few weeks, though.

here are various pictures of the funnel + the hail that fell during the storm here, the tornado was about 2 blocks from my house, it ended up touching the ground a few blocks away and killed somebody

tornadoes are incredibly common where I live but this one was pretty big and came through the entire southside of the city, so lots of people got pics

Fuck I hate tornadoes so fucking much. Fortunately we've not been hit really where I live, although I do remember this one tornado a few years ago that skipped over my house and completely flattened an apartment complex a few blocks away from me. Scariest shit ever.

I like rain but here in India you don't get any except the monsoons, and during that time it pretty much won't stop raining. I'd love a tornado or two.

Tornadoes terrify the shit out of me. Everybody loves to rip on Buffalo, but our worst yearly natural disaster is a snowstorm that just makes everyone stay inside and watch TV for a day.

Isn't your worst yearly natural disaster the Buffalo Bills' season?

i live in the Netherlands

our worst natural disaster each year usually is a few centimeters of snow that make it slippery on the roads by melting and then freezing again.

sometimes the wind blows over a tree or two.

Fun stuff. I would not mind doing some tornado-chasing while on the job if the opportunity presents itself. We get some threatening storms a few times each Summer on average, so I may be lucky enough to do just that.

That must have been a serious storm for those pictures. Too bad it had to hit and kill someone...

Okay that times 300 or so for Alabama too I remember seeing the video out of that. It was painful to watch.

Really, the odd thing about tornadoes compared to other natural disasters is that sometimes you have one person's house destroyed and the neighbor is just missing a few shingles. Happened here about a month ago on the north side of town.

Finally got a bit of Internet here.

I live in Joplin, MO, and let me tell you: it's like a fucking warzone.

My Dad was at work and his plant got utterly destroyed, his truck was picked up by the tornado and we haven't found it yet... it's gone. My old high school is levelled off the face of the map. About a 2 square mile radius is just a pile of rubble. I was at a walmart when it hit and it tore the entire building down around me. Scariest thing I've ever experienced, but I'm alive luckily, and my home is intact.

I am so thankful that no one I know / love got hurt.

God this post is so incoherent cause I don't even know what to say... it's just bad here, guys.

I guess if you have any questions for someone who was in the tornado / is in the middle of the remains... I'm here to answer anything. I'm out volunteering at a call center amassing a missing person's list, but I'll try and check in here every once and a while.

I honestly don't understand why some of you can joke about these torrid events it looks awful and is sad to see how many lives have been lost.

Glad to hear you are ok LN.

good luck. sounds intense.. it's a scary thing when you have no control on what is happening around you, and all you can do is wait it out. I kind of wish I could be part of a tornado.. as long as I knew everything I own and love, including myself, would be alright. Just to experience it.

Good thing you're all right, do what you need to do there for sure. I'm sure there's a lot going on there and I can't imagine what it would be like.
